Which Airports Serve London?

London is served by several airports. This guide covers four of London’s main airports: Heathrow in the west, Gatwick in the south, Stansted in the north-east and Luton in the north. Each has its own rail links, coach services and taxi options, and each is best for a different kind of trip.

Services change. Lines close for engineering work, operators change timetables, and fares are revised. The details in this guide describe the options at the time of writing, and they are not a timetable. Check the operator or airport site on the day you travel.

Airport Transfer Comparison

The table compares the main rail options from each airport. It lists operators and the central London stations each route serves, rather than prices or journey times, which change often.

Heathrow Transfer Options

Heathrow has several rail options. The Elizabeth line reaches several central stations, including Bond Street, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Paddington, Stratford and Tottenham Court Road. The Piccadilly line serves all Heathrow terminals and is often the lower-cost rail option, though it takes longer than the faster services. The Heathrow Express is a non-stop service to Paddington, where you can change to the Underground or the Elizabeth line.

Coaches run from Heathrow to Victoria coach station. They leave from outside Terminal 4 and Terminal 5, and from the Central Bus Station, a short walk from Terminals 2 and 3. Heathrow publishes planned engineering closures, and the Piccadilly line is sometimes closed for works, so check the current service notices before you rely on it.

Gatwick Transfer Options

Gatwick’s rail station is in the South Terminal, and a shuttle links it to the North Terminal. From the station, the Gatwick Express runs directly to London Victoria. Southern trains also serve Victoria, Clapham Junction and London Bridge. Thameslink trains run north through central London, calling at London Bridge, London Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras International.

Gatwick’s official information states that Oyster and contactless cards can be used for travel to central London. Check the current ticketing rules on the airport site before you travel, because they can change.

Stansted Transfer Options

The Stansted Express runs from London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport. The airport station sits beneath the terminal, so you do not need to leave the building to reach the platforms. Some direct services also call at Tottenham Hale and Stratford, which connect with the Underground.

Oyster is not valid for Stansted

Oyster cards are not valid for travel to or from Stansted Airport. Payment options on the Stansted Express have been described differently across sources, so buy your ticket in advance or at the station, and check the current payment methods on the operator’s site.

Luton Transfer Options

Luton Airport is linked to the rail network through Luton Airport Parkway station. The Luton DART, an automated link, runs between the station and the airport terminal. It replaced the old shuttle bus in 2023. Walking from the station to the terminal is not recommended, because the route is long and includes a steep hill.

Trains from London St Pancras International, Farringdon, City Thameslink, London Blackfriars and London Bridge reach Luton Airport Parkway. Coach stops are outside the terminal, served by National Express, Greenline, Stagecoach and Arriva. When you book a rail ticket, choose Luton Airport as your destination, which covers the onward link to the terminal.

Taxis and Private Transfers

Taxis and private hire vehicles operate at all four airports. Use the official taxi rank or the airport’s recommended booking channel, and agree the fare or confirm the booking before you set off. Private transfers can suit groups with a lot of luggage, but the cost and the road journey time depend on traffic and the time of day, so this guide does not give figures.

How to Choose Based on Your Destination

The best transfer depends on where you are staying. Start with the station closest to your hotel, then check which line or train reaches it. If your hotel is near Paddington, the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line may be the simplest choice. If you are staying near St Pancras, Luton and Gatwick Thameslink routes are worth considering. For Liverpool Street, Stansted is the direct option. For the south of the river, Gatwick’s Thameslink and Southern services are useful.

Check two things before you choose: the change at your end, and whether you will need to walk, carry bags on stairs, or connect to another line. A cheaper transfer that needs two changes can cost more time than a direct route.

Luggage and Family Considerations

Large suitcases, pushchairs and young children make some routes harder. Look for routes with lifts, and avoid long walks between platforms and exits. The Stansted station has lifts and escalators, which helps travellers with heavy bags. At Luton, the automated link to the terminal avoids a long walk, and at Gatwick the free shuttle links the two terminals.

Families may prefer a direct route to a single central station, then a taxi for the last stretch, rather than several changes on the Underground.

Late-Night and Early-Morning Arrivals

Not every rail service runs all night, and first and last train times differ by route and by day. If your flight lands late or leaves early, check the first and last trains on the operator’s timetable for your date. Where rail does not run, a taxi or a pre-booked private transfer is the usual alternative.

Arrivals late at night can also mean a long queue at taxi ranks, so consider booking a transfer in advance if you have a fixed time to meet a host.

Contactless and Ticketing Guidance

Contactless cards and mobile wallets are accepted on Transport for London services, including the Underground and buses. Some rail services outside the TfL network use different payment rules, and not every card works for every route. Read the payment information for each operator before you travel.

  • Check whether your route accepts contactless payment before you tap in.
  • Oyster cards are not valid for Stansted Airport journeys.
  • Buy tickets in advance for rail services where it is offered, and keep the confirmation.
  • Select the correct destination when booking, especially for Luton Airport.

Accessibility Considerations

If you travel with a wheelchair, reduced mobility or heavy luggage, check the step-free routes for each station and the airport’s assistance services before you travel. Lift and escalator availability can change, and some stations have platform gaps or steps. Contact the operator in advance if you need help boarding.

Avoiding Common Transfer Mistakes

Assuming all transfers take the same time

Distance on a map does not tell you how long a transfer takes, because routes, connections and crowds vary. Build in a margin.

Choosing the wrong central station

Liverpool Street, St Pancras, Victoria and Paddington are all major stations, but they serve different areas. Check your hotel’s nearest station before you buy.

Not checking closures

Planned engineering works can close lines at short notice. Check the operator’s service notices the morning you travel.

Leaving tickets until you arrive

Buying rail tickets in advance can be simpler than queuing at a machine after a long flight. Keep the confirmation with you.

UK Entry and Arrival Considerations

At the airport you will go through UK border control. Whether you need an ETA depends on your nationality and your circumstances, not on which airport you use or which transfer you choose. Eligible travellers who visit for tourism can use an ETA for a trip like this, and travellers who are not eligible may need a visa instead. Our UK ETA requirements guide explains who needs an ETA, and the border control guide explains what to expect on arrival.
