UK ETA TRAVEL GUIDE
UK ETA for Short-Term Study
Eligible travellers may use a UK ETA for qualifying study under the Standard Visitor route, generally for courses or other permitted study activity lasting up to six months.
Can I Study in the UK with an ETA?
Yes — an eligible ETA traveller may undertake qualifying study as a Standard Visitor, generally for up to six months, provided the activity meets the Visitor study rules.
⚠️ Important Distinction:
Study with a UK ETA as a Standard Visitor is not the same as the separate Short-term Study visa. The Short-term Study visa is a different immigration route specifically for English-language courses lasting more than 6 months and no more than 11 months.
What Can I Study with a UK ETA?
Qualifying study at an accredited institution generally falls within Standard Visitor rules. Examples of study that can be undertaken include:
Short academic courses
English-language courses (up to 6 months)
Professional and educational short courses
Summer courses and seasonal programmes
Certificate and diploma courses
Online/hybrid courses with UK element
📋 Accreditation Matters:
The provider must be an accredited institution recognised by UK immigration rules for Visitor study. Not every school or course provider automatically qualifies.
What Is an Accredited Institution?
An accredited institution is a provider recognised by UK immigration authorities as meeting the required standards for Visitor study. This includes universities, colleges, language schools and other recognised educational providers that meet specific criteria.
Accreditation requirements generally include:
- •Proper registration with relevant UK educational authorities
- •Appropriate qualifications and experience of teaching staff
- •Suitable facilities and curriculum standards
- •Student welfare and safeguarding arrangements
- •Compliance with immigration reporting requirements
Before applying for an ETA or enrolling, verify that your chosen institution meets UK immigration accreditation standards.
Can I Study at a UK State-Funded School with an ETA?
Ordinary Visitor study at a state-funded school or academy is generally not permitted under Standard Visitor rules.
General Rule
Standard Visitor study is restricted to accredited independent schools and other recognised private educational institutions. State-funded schools are generally not permitted destinations for Visitor course study.
If you intend to attend a state-funded school, you may need a different immigration route, such as a Child Student visa (for under-18 students) or Student visa (for longer courses).
From 8 October 2026: A specific exception will apply to qualifying Erasmus+ participants. Eligible Erasmus+ students will be able to undertake specified study and activities at participating UK state-funded schools and academies, subject to new Erasmus+ programme requirements. This is not a general permission for all ETA visitors to study at state-funded schools.
Can I Study English with a UK ETA?
Yes. A qualifying English-language course of up to six months can fall under Standard Visitor study with a UK ETA.
English Study as a Visitor
Short-term English-language study at an accredited language school or educational institution is permitted under Standard Visitor rules, generally for up to 6 months per visit.
Examples include:
- •General English courses
- •Business English programmes
- •Exam preparation courses (IELTS, Cambridge, etc.)
- •Specialist English for professional purposes
📌 Longer English Study Option
If your English course lasts longer than 6 months but no more than 11 months, the separate Short-term Study visa may be the appropriate immigration route.
Even longer study or other types of courses typically require the Student visa route. See UK Visa Guide for more information.
UK ETA Study vs Short-term Study Visa
This is a critical distinction. ETA study and the Short-term Study visa are separate immigration categories with different conditions.
| UK ETA / Standard Visitor Study | Short-term Study Visa |
|---|---|
| Eligible ETA nationalities | Any nationality |
| Study duration: generally up to 6 months | Course must be longer than 6 months and no more than 11 months |
| Course type: various qualifying courses | English-language study only |
| Age: no universal minimum | Generally age 16 or over |
| Application: ETA system | Separate visa application |
| Multiple entries: supported | Single entry typically |
Key Point:
Do not assume any course lasting 7–11 months automatically qualifies for the Short-term Study visa. The route is specifically for English-language study only. Other types of courses in that duration range would typically require the Student visa.
UK ETA vs Student Visa
ETA Visitor study and the Student visa route serve different purposes and have different scopes.
UK ETA / Standard Visitor Study
Temporary, short-term study fitting Visitor rules, generally up to 6 months, at accredited institutions.
Student Visa
A different immigration route for longer or sponsored study with a licensed UK educational institution. Applies to a wide range of courses at universities, colleges and other eligible providers.
For longer courses, progression to higher study, or degrees, you typically need Student visa sponsorship. See UK Visa Guide for more information.
UK ETA Study vs Child Student Visa
Children may study in the UK under Visitor rules where appropriate conditions are met. However, long-term schooling may require different immigration permission.
Short-Term Study with ETA (Under-18)
A child may visit the UK for qualifying short-term study as a Standard Visitor, provided Standard Visitor conditions are met, including suitable travel arrangements, accommodation and parental/guardian consent.
Long-Term Education (Independent Schools)
A child attending an independent school in the UK for a full academic year or longer typically requires the Child Student visa route, not Visitor status.
Can I Visit the UK for a Distance-Learning Course?
Yes. There is a specific exception for distance-learning courses. Because most study occurs outside the UK, a UK visit can be longer than the typical 6-month Visitor study limit.
How Distance-Learning Exception Works
The overall distance-learning course may extend beyond 6 months because the majority of study occurs outside the UK. A qualifying UK visitor visit for distance-learning activities can include:
- •Course induction or orientation
- •Intensive face-to-face learning periods
- •Progress checks and progress monitoring
- •Examinations and assessments
- •Required practicum or practical components
⚠️ Important Limitation:
This does NOT mean you can live continuously in the UK throughout a long-distance-learning course. Your visit must still fit within the purposes and conditions of the Visitor rules. The exception applies specifically to the study-related activities outlined above.
Can I Do Research in the UK with an ETA?
Certain research connected to an overseas degree-level course can be undertaken under Visitor rules.
Research Eligibility
Short research undertaken as part of an overseas degree-level course may be permitted where:
- •You are age 16 or over
- •You are enrolled on an overseas course equivalent to UK degree level
- •Research is at a UK higher education institution
- •The research is directly relevant to your overseas course
- •Duration is generally no more than 6 months
Important: Appropriate evidence confirming the research arrangement will be required. You should have documentation from both your overseas institution and the UK higher education institution.
Can I Do a Medical or Healthcare Elective with an ETA?
Qualifying clinical and healthcare electives can be undertaken under Visitor rules.
Eligible Healthcare Electives
Students pursuing overseas degree-level study in the following fields may undertake electives:
- •Medicine
- •Veterinary medicine and science
- •Nursing
- •Midwifery
- •Dentistry
General Requirements
- •Age 16 or over
- •Enrolled on an overseas degree-equivalent course
- •Elective at a UK higher education institution
- •Elective is part of overseas course progression
- •Generally no more than 6 months
- •No prohibited patient treatment or payment involved
⚠️ Provider Confirmation Required:
The UK institution must confirm that the elective meets visitor rules and does not involve prohibited patient treatment, payment or work arrangements.
Can I Travel to the UK for an Exam?
Yes. Current Standard Visitor rules permit certain examination, testing and academic assessment activities.
Permitted Examination Activities
- •Entrance examination for overseas admission
- •Resitting a failed examination
- •Retaking a module or component
- •PhD viva voce (oral examination)
- •Professional or certification examinations
Note: Not every examination automatically qualifies as a permitted Visitor activity. Your specific circumstances and the nature of the exam will be assessed.
PLAB and OSCE Visits
Current Standard Visitor rules contain specific provisions for PLAB and OSCE examinations.
PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board) and OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) testing can generally fall within permitted visitor purposes where the examination is registered and confirmed.
Appropriate documentation confirming your exam registration and dates will support your visit explanation.
Unpaid Clinical Attachments and Dental Observer Posts
Certain overseas medical, dental, nursing and midwifery graduates can undertake qualifying unpaid clinical attachments.
What May Be Permitted
Overseas healthcare professionals may undertake unpaid clinical attachments or dental observer posts where:
- •Attachment is unpaid
- •Specific conditions and arrangements are met
- •No prohibited patient treatment or payment involved
- •Appropriate institutional documentation provided
⚠️ Important Distinction:
Unpaid clinical attachments are not the same as undertaking a course or routine employment. They are subject to specific conditions and require supporting documentation from the healthcare institution.
Do I Need an ATAS Certificate?
For certain subject areas at postgraduate level or above, an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate may be required before study or research begins.
ATAS certificates are required in specified sensitive subject areas, particularly in science and technology fields. The requirement depends on your nationality, subject and level of study.
If ATAS is required, you must obtain the certificate before your study or research begins in the UK.
Check current requirements: ATAS requirements change periodically based on government policy. Verify current requirements before planning your UK study visit.
What Documents Do I Need for a UK ETA Study Visit?
It is important to distinguish between ETA application requirements and evidence you may need for your study visit.
ETA Application Requirements
The ETA application process focuses on your passport and personal information. It does not universally require uploading course acceptance letters, study evidence or financial documentation.
Useful for Travel Preparation
For border discussion and visit preparation, useful information may include: course acceptance letter, institutional confirmation, course schedule, your education background, ATAS certificate (if applicable) and research confirmation (if applicable).
📋 Key Distinction:
Do not assume you must obtain and upload extensive supporting documents into the ETA application system. ETA requirements are separate from travel preparation.
Do I Need a Course Acceptance Letter?
A course acceptance letter is not a universal ETA application requirement, but it can be useful for travel preparation.
For Visitor Study Eligibility
Where the Visitor rules require it, you must be able to establish that you have been accepted onto the qualifying course or study activity. An acceptance letter or enrolment confirmation from the institution establishes this.
Border Discussion
Having documentary evidence of course acceptance can support your explanation at the border, but this is not the same as a universal ETA application document requirement.
Can I Work in the UK While Studying with an ETA?
An ETA is NOT general permission to work in the UK. Standard Visitor study rules do not automatically confer work rights.
Work Restrictions
- ✗No ordinary UK employment permitted merely because studying
- ✗No UK work rights from ETA study status
- ✗No Student-route work entitlements
- ✗Separate work visa/permit may be required for any UK work
If you intend to work in the UK while studying, you may require a different immigration route. Explore options at UK Visa Guide.
How Long Can I Study in the UK with an ETA?
This is a crucial distinction: your ETA validity period and your permitted length of study are two different things.
Standard Visitor Study Duration:
Ordinary study can generally extend for up to 6 months on each visit. The Border Force officer determines the specific permitted duration at the border.
Your ETA Validity Period:
Your UK ETA normally lasts 2 years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. A 2-year ETA does NOT mean 2 years of continuous study.
What This Means:
You can make multiple study visits during your ETA's validity, but each visit is limited to 6 months (or less as determined by the officer). Each arrival is assessed separately.
Can I Use the Same ETA for Multiple Study Trips?
Yes. An approved ETA generally permits multiple study visits to the UK while the authorisation remains valid.
Multiple Entries:
Your ETA permits multiple study journeys to the UK during its validity period without new approval for each visit.
Each Visit Is Separate:
Every time you arrive at a UK port or airport, Border Force will assess whether you meet entry requirements for your study purpose.
⚠️ Important Warning:
Do not use successive study visits to effectively undertake long-term study outside the proper immigration route. If you are found to be circumventing Student visa requirements through repeated short visits, entry may be refused on future attempts.
Studying in the UK with an ETA if You're Under 18
Children under 18 can study in the UK as visitors, subject to additional requirements.
Additional Requirements for Under-18 Visitors
- •Suitable travel arrangements (independent travel or appropriate supervision)
- •Suitable accommodation and care arrangements
- •Parental or guardian consent where required
- •Sufficient funding and financial support for the visit
- •For unaccompanied minors: additional safeguarding and care arrangements
Note: These are Visitor-rules requirements. Long-term or independent-school education may require the Child Student route instead. See UK Visa Guide.
Can I Combine Study with Tourism?
Yes. A qualifying visitor may combine study with other permitted visitor activities, such as tourism and sightseeing, during the same trip.
Learn more in our UK ETA for Tourism guide.
Can I Study While Visiting Family or Friends?
Yes. A qualifying traveller can combine study with visiting family or friends where both purposes are permitted under Visitor rules.
Learn more in our UK ETA for Visiting Family and Friends guide.
Can I Combine Study and Business Activities?
At a high level, separately permitted Visitor business activities may be possible where all applicable rules are met, though this depends on your specific circumstances.
Learn more in our UK ETA for Business Visits guide.
What You Cannot Do on an Ordinary ETA Study Visit
Avoid these common misunderstandings:
✗ Use an ETA as a substitute for Student visa
Longer courses, sponsored study and other degree-level study require the Student route.
✗ Stay beyond your permitted study period
Each visit has a limit; overstaying is a serious immigration breach.
✗ Use successive visits to undertake long-term study
Attempting to circumvent Student visa requirements through repeated short visits is not permitted.
✗ Take ordinary UK employment while studying
Study as a Visitor does not confer work rights. A different route is needed for UK work.
✗ Assume any institution or course qualifies
The provider must be accredited and the course must fit Visitor study rules.
✗ Confuse ETA study with the Short-term Study visa
These are separate routes with different rules and timescales.
✗ Assume ETA guarantees admission
An ETA is travel authorisation; entry is at the discretion of Border Force.
Common UK ETA Study Mistakes
Avoid these misunderstandings:
❌ Thinking "Short-term Study visa" and ETA study are the same
✓ Reality: They are separate routes. The Short-term Study visa is specifically for English-language courses longer than 6 months (up to 11 months), not for general short courses.
❌ Assuming every 7–11 month course qualifies for Short-term Study visa
✓ Reality: The Short-term Study visa is English-language only. Other courses in that timeframe require the Student route.
❌ Forgetting that ETA study requires accreditation
✓ Reality: Not every school or course automatically qualifies. The provider must meet UK immigration accreditation standards.
❌ Thinking ETA validity equals course duration permission
✓ Reality: Your 2-year ETA does not mean 2 years of study. Each visit is limited to 6 months (or less as determined by the officer).
❌ Trying to use repeated ETA visits for long-term study
✓ Reality: This violates Visitor rules. Longer study requires the Student route.
❌ Confusing ETA application requirements with study evidence
✓ Reality: ETA requirements focus on passport/personal info. Study evidence is useful for travel preparation but not a universal ETA requirement.
❌ Assuming ETA confers work rights
✓ Reality: An ETA does not permit ordinary UK employment. A different visa is needed for any work.
❌ Ignoring ATAS where applicable
✓ Reality: If your subject requires ATAS, you must obtain it before arriving in the UK.
❌ Travelling on a new passport without reapplying
✓ Reality: Your ETA is linked to your specific passport. A new passport requires a new ETA.
