UK ETA TRAVEL GUIDE
UK ETA for Permitted Paid Engagements
Eligible ETA travellers may undertake certain specifically defined paid professional engagements under Standard Visitor rules.
Can I Do Paid Work in the UK with an ETA?
A UK ETA does NOT give general permission to work in the UK. However, visitors who meet specific Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) requirements may undertake certain qualifying paid professional engagements.
PPE is an exception within the Visitor framework, not general work permission.
What Is a Permitted Paid Engagement?
A PPE is a specific paid activity allowed under Standard Visitor rules for certain experts and professionals.
Core characteristics:
- Specialist or professional activity
- Directly connected to your overseas expertise and occupation
- Arranged before you travel to the UK
- Supported by a formal invitation
- Restricted to qualifying professional categories
- Must be completed within the first 30 days of entry
PPE is not general freelance permission or ordinary UK employment.
Who Can Undertake a Permitted Paid Engagement?
Age requirement: You must be 18 years of age or over when entering the UK.
Professional requirement: The engagement must relate to your area of expertise and occupation overseas. Being invited and being paid is not enough. The engagement must fall within a permitted professional category.
If you undertake a paid activity outside permitted categories, you may breach Visitor rules.
The 30-Day Permitted Paid Engagement Rule
The qualifying PPE must be completed within 30 days of your entry to the UK.
Critical distinction: This does NOT mean you can only stay in the UK for 30 days.
A Standard Visitor may generally remain for up to six months. The PPE activity itself must be completed within the first 30 days after entry.
Example timeline:
• Day 1: Arrive and granted 6 months Visitor permission
• Days 1–30: Complete your qualifying PPE
• Day 31 onwards: Visitor permission continues, but further paid work outside permitted categories is not allowed
• Day 180 (approx): 6-month Visitor permission expires
Must the Paid Engagement Be Arranged Before I Travel?
Yes. The engagement must be arranged before you travel to the UK.
Do not plan to enter as a tourist and search for paid professional work once you arrive.
Do I Need a Formal Invitation?
Yes. PPE must be supported by a formal invitation appropriate to your professional category.
Required inviter by category:
- Academics and expert lecturers: UK higher education, research or arts organisation
- Overseas pilot examiners: UK CAA-regulated training organisation
- Qualified lawyers: Client engaging your services
- Professional artists/entertainers/musicians: Creative organisation, agent or broadcaster
- Professional sportspeople: Sports organisation, agent or broadcaster
- Speakers: Conference or event organiser

Permitted Paid Engagement vs UK Work Visa
PPE is narrow, temporary and category-specific. If your activity involves ordinary employment, filling a UK role, ongoing work, or establishing a business, you need a different immigration route.
See our UK Visa Guide.
What You Cannot Do with a Permitted Paid Engagement
- Take ordinary UK employment or a UK job
- Fill a permanent or fixed-term UK job role
- Undertake unrelated paid work outside permitted categories
- Enter as a tourist with intent to find paid engagements
- Treat PPE as general freelance permission
- Undertake an engagement outside your professional category
- Continue paid activity after the 30-day PPE window
- Assume an ETA guarantees entry to the UK
Common Permitted Paid Engagement Mistakes
❌ Thinking an ETA grants work permission
Only specific PPE is allowed, not general work.
❌ Arranging paid work after arrival
PPE must be arranged before travel.
❌ Missing a formal invitation
Formal invitations are required for all PPE categories.
❌ Misunderstanding the 30-day rule
PPE must complete within 30 days, but your Visitor stay can be longer.
❌ Confusing PPE with Creative Worker routes
Creative Worker concession and visa are separate routes with different requirements. See our Creative Worker Concession guide.

Q: Do I have to declare a PPE in my ETA application?

For a traveller applying for Visitor entry clearance (not ETA), the intended engagement must be declared as part of that application.
Q: Can a UK organisation pay me for the engagement?
A: Yes. A UK organisation can pay you for your qualifying PPE. The payment itself is not a barrier, provided the engagement falls within the permitted categories and you meet all other PPE requirements.
Q: Can I undertake more than one PPE during the same Visitor visit?
A: Yes, you may undertake multiple PPE activities during a single Visitor stay, provided each meets the requirements, is properly evidenced by formal invitations, and all activities are completed within the 30-day PPE window.
Q: Can an artist, entertainer or musician receive payment?
A: Yes. Professional artists, entertainers and musicians can undertake qualifying PPE if invited by an appropriate creative organisation, agent or broadcaster, and if the engagement is professional performance or creative activity related to their expertise.
Q: Can a qualified lawyer undertake paid advocacy or dispute resolution?
A: Yes. Qualified lawyers may undertake qualifying PPE including paid advocacy, arbitration, and dispute resolution work, if engaged by a client and if the work relates to their overseas legal expertise.
Q: What counts as expertise and occupation overseas?
A: Your engagement must relate to your professional specialisation and current or recent occupation outside the UK. A one-off invitation alone is not sufficient; the activity must be directly connected to your demonstrated field of professional practice.
