đź‡đź‡şUK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Hungarian Citizens
A Hungarian citizen usually travels to the UK on a Hungarian passport, and that passport is the document an approval is tied to. The national identity card works in a different set of countries, and it is not a substitute for the passport on a UK trip. This guide sets out who needs an approval from 2 April 2025, how Hungarian passport validity by age affects a family trip, where the identity card stops, and how eGates and dual nationality change the answer.

The Short Answer for Hungarian Travellers
In brief
Most short trips without UK permission need an approval. The exceptions, such as an existing visa, residence rights or a British or Irish passport, change the answer only for the journey they cover.
The useful question is which document you will cross the border with. For a Hungarian, the passport is the travel document, and the identity card does not carry the same reach. The table lists the common outcomes; the sections below explain each.
| Situation | Position |
|---|---|
| Hungarian passport, short visit, no UK permission | Approval needed |
| Hungarian passport, settled or pre-settled status | Not needed |
| Hungarian passport, valid UK visa for the journey | Not needed for that journey |
| Hungarian and British citizen | Not obtainable; travel on British evidence |
| Hungarian and Irish citizen | Not obtainable; travel on Irish evidence |
| Hungarian identity card as the only document for the UK | Not an approval document |
| Connection that stays airside | Not needed for that connection |
Hungary in the 2 April 2025 Group
The ETA National List is organised by travel date. Qatar was first, the Gulf states followed, and a large group took effect on 8 January 2025. Hungary sits in the later group that begins on 2 April 2025, alongside Austria, Czechia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece, and the other EU members on the list.
A journey before 2 April 2025 was not governed by the approval requirement for Hungarian passport holders. An older article or a family memory describing easy travel therefore reflects an earlier position, not the current one.
The Hungarian Passport and the Approval
Under the Immigration Rules, an approval permits travel only when the passport named in the application is the one used. The passport is therefore the document to apply with, carry and present, and there is no other document that stands in for it on an approval trip.
The approval belongs to that passport number. A replacement or renewed passport carries a different number, so the approval must be checked against the new document. Count the approval from its grant date: it runs two years, or until the passport expires if that is sooner.
The passport must also remain valid for the whole stay, so check the expiry against the return date as well as against the approval.
Passport Validity by Age
Official Hungarian guidance on passports sets validity by age. An adult passport, for a holder over 18, is valid for 10 years. A passport for a holder aged 6 to 18 is valid for 5 years. A passport for a child under 6 is valid for 3 years.
The shorter child periods matter in a family. A child’s passport can run out during the approval period, so the expiry date should be checked against the trip for every child, not only for the adults.
Where the Hungarian Identity Card Stops
Current Hungarian police guidance says that old brown book-format identity cards lost their validity on 3 August 2026, and that they can no longer be used to prove identity or to travel abroad. Do not travel on one of those cards. For card-format identity cards, Hungarian guidance describes travel to some EEA countries and to Switzerland, but the rules depend on the destination, and the sources do not all agree on the Swiss point. Check the entry requirements of the destination before each trip rather than relying on this summary. The UK is not among the places where the card covers travel for an approval trip, so a Hungarian bound for the UK should carry the passport.
The UK rules on EU national identity cards are narrower still. An identity card can be used at the UK border only in listed circumstances: settled or pre-settled status, a family permit under the Settlement Scheme, a Frontier Worker permit, S2 Healthcare Visitor status, or a narrow case for someone under 18 on a French school trip. A person waiting for a decision on a settlement application may use the card with valid proof of that application.
Outside those cases, the card does not replace the passport, and it does not satisfy the approval for an ETA trip. Identity card validity periods are set by the issuing authority and are not restated here, because the rule that matters at the UK border is about which card, and for what purpose.
Settlement Scheme Status
Settled and pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme give permission to live in the UK. The ETA guidance treats that permission as a reason not to need an approval. A Hungarian passport does not by itself make a person an ordinary applicant.
A pending application is treated the same way, provided the proof of application is valid. We do not give individual status advice here. Confirm your position through your own account before you book.
eGates and the EU Lane
Hungarian passport holders are EU nationals, so they use the UK/EEA lane. The guidance says a passport or identity card used there should be linked to the traveller’s UK immigration account where settled status, a visa application or a pending application applies, and a delay can follow if it is not.
Automatic gates are open to EU, EEA and Swiss travellers who have a biometric passport symbol, are 8 or over, and have valid digital immigration status or a record of a digital exemption. Those aged 8 to 17 must be accompanied and be at least 120cm tall.
How an ETA-only visitor meets the digital-status condition is not explained in the guidance. Treat the gate as a possibility, not a plan. For how the arrival works, see our UK border control, eGates and arrival guide.
Who Does Not Need an Approval
The ETA guidance sets out the groups who fall outside the approval requirement. For a Hungarian passport holder, three of them are the usual ones to examine first: a valid UK visa for the journey it covers, permission to live, work or study in the UK (where settled status and right of abode sit), and a pending Settlement Scheme application backed by valid proof.
Nationality-based exceptions also exist. A British or Irish citizen travels on that nationality’s evidence, and holders of a British Overseas Territory Citizen or British National (Overseas) passport are outside the rule. Residence on Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man, and lawful residence in the Republic of Ireland under the Common Travel Area conditions, are further bases. Match yourself to whichever basis applies, and keep its evidence to hand.
Dual Nationals
For a Hungarian with a second nationality, the first question is which passport will be presented at the border. The approval answer follows from that.
A Hungarian who is also a British or Irish citizen cannot obtain an approval. The guidance lists the acceptable proof: a valid British passport, a second passport with a certificate of entitlement to right of abode, or a valid Irish passport. Such a traveller uses that evidence.
Where the second nationality is also listed, the application names the passport that will cross the border, and that document alone is covered. A second nationality that requires a UK visa means checking the visa rules for that passport. This guide does not give Hungarian nationality-law advice; the UK answer turns on the passport and on British or Irish citizenship.
An approval does not carry over from one passport to another, so a dual national who uses a different passport on a later trip needs that passport checked on its own terms. For the wider British and Irish position, see our dual citizens article.
Families with Different Documents
A Hungarian household can mix a parent on a Hungarian passport, a child on a shorter-validity passport, and a relative with British or another nationality. Each person is assessed on their own document and status.
Every person who needs an approval needs one, babies included. A parent may submit for a child, and the result is attached to that child’s passport. Results can arrive on different days, so plan the trip around the last one.
Keep evidence of the family relationship with the passports, as the border may ask about it. For more, see our children, babies and families article.
Registered Traveller and Hungary
Registered Traveller is a separate membership service from the ETA. Members can use UK passport lanes at the listed airports and Eurostar terminals, and, where the passport has a chip, the ePassport gates. Membership needs an eligible passport and either an eligible UK visa or a recent travel history.
Hungary is not on the current eligible-passport list. The list groups countries by region, and its European entries are limited to Andorra, Monaco and the Vatican City, so no EU member state appears there. Check the list before relying on any expedited route, since it can change.
Registered Traveller does not replace the approval. Keep the two questions apart: whether you need an approval, and whether a faster border route is open to you. Membership also requires the applicant to be 18 or older, and to hold either an eligible UK visa or a record of four or more UK entries in the last 24 months where no visa was needed.
What an Approval Permits
An approval covers short Visitor journeys, with stays of up to six months on each occasion. It can be used for several journeys while it remains valid, so long as each one fits the rules.
- Holidays and city breaks. See UK ETA for tourism.
- Visits to family and friends. See visiting family and friends.
- Business meetings and conferences. See UK ETA for business visits.
- Short courses. See UK ETA for short-term study.
- Certain paid engagements. See permitted paid engagements.
What an Approval Does Not Permit
Paid work, a student visa and settlement all sit outside what an approval grants. Stepping beyond the Visitor rules risks refusal or cancellation.
- Paid employment for a UK employer. That requires a different route.
- Living in the UK through repeated visits. Repeat trips do not create a residence right. See how often you can visit on an ETA.
- Long-term study. Study beyond a short course needs its own permission.
The comparison of ETA and visa routes shows the alternatives if your plans fall outside these lines.
Passport Applications: Papers and Consent
For an adult passport, the application needs a valid identity document, or one issued by a Hungarian authority that expired no more than a year ago, together with proof of address. The passport must be applied for in person at a government window, which takes the photograph, fingerprints and signature on the spot.
For a child, the application is made by a legal representative. If only one parent is making it, the official guidance requires the other parent’s written consent. Families should arrange that consent before the appointment, since its absence can stop the application being completed that day.
A renewal also requires the previous passport if it is still valid. Gather it with the other papers, rather than assuming the new application can proceed without it.
Renewing or Replacing a Passport
Official Hungarian guidance says a new passport cannot be applied for online. The application is made in person at a government window, where the photograph, fingerprints and signature are taken on the spot. A lost, stolen or destroyed passport is reported and replaced through the official process, and the guidance describes an online route for reporting the loss of a still-valid passport.
Because the approval is tied to the passport number, a renewed or replacement passport needs its approval checked, and a new application where it no longer matches. Allow for the in-person appointment when planning, so the document and the approval are both ready before the flight.
Hungarian passport offices offer both a normal and an accelerated procedure, and the choice affects how quickly the document is ready. Fees differ between the two and by the age of the applicant and the validity period chosen, so check the current schedule rather than relying on an older figure. The accelerated route is the one to consider when a trip is close and the approval has already been arranged around the new passport.
For the broader rules, see our ETA validity and new passport article.
Transit and Connections
A connection needs an approval only when the route passes through UK border control at a UK airport before the onward journey. A connection that remains airside, without that control, does not need one for that purpose.
Ask the carrier how the ticket is routed, because a single itinerary can contain both kinds of leg. We do not name airlines, airports or Hungary-specific routes. The general rules are in our transit and layovers article.
Ireland and Northern Ireland
The Republic of Ireland is a separate state. Northern Ireland is part of the UK. The United Kingdom is the state that sets the approval rule. The Common Travel Area is the arrangement that eases movement among the UK, the Republic, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, without removing the approval requirement for those who need one.
The Common Travel Area exemption applies to people lawfully resident in the Republic who meet the relevant conditions, and evidence can be requested from those aged 16 and over. Passing through Ireland does not bring a visitor within it. See our Ireland and Common Travel Area article.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
A UK ETA can cover travel to the UK together with Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Those three Crown Dependencies sit outside the UK proper, yet a single approval can reach them during its life.
Residence or employment on one of the islands counts as its own basis for exemption. Island rules shift, so verify the position for the specific place close to departure.
Papers That Look Like Travel Documents but Are Not
Official Hungarian guidance is explicit that a driving licence is not a recognised travel document abroad. Identity is shown abroad with the identity card or the passport, and nothing else on the list should be carried in their place.
If an identity card has expired and an application is under way, the office can issue a temporary card. The official guidance notes that some countries do not accept it, so a temporary card is not a reliable basis for a UK trip. For a UK journey, the passport is the document, and the approval is tied to it.
The official material also addresses the national mobile identity app. It works for identification inside Hungary, including at a roadside check, but the guidance is clear that a trip abroad needs a valid identity card or passport. An app on a phone does not stand in for either.
Identity Card Timing for Trips Within Europe
Adult identity cards are valid until a birthday six years after issue, and a new card can be requested no earlier than 60 days before expiry. Holders aged 12 to 17 receive cards with shorter validity. The renewal rule matters for travel within the EEA and Switzerland, where a card-format card may be accepted, subject to each destination’s rules.
None of this changes the UK position. A card renewal does not create or extend an approval, and a card that is current is still not the document for a UK approval trip. A new card can also be requested only within the final 60 days before its expiry date, so an early request is not possible and planning should start by checking that date.
Arriving at the Border
Hungarian passport holders use the UK/EEA lane. The officer checks the document you present and the permission it supports, and may ask about the reason for your visit.
The approval has no printed form, so the passport is the document you present. Keep your accommodation address and onward travel details available, and remove sunglasses or a face covering. Families pass through control together.
The officer decides whether you may enter. An approval permits travel but does not guarantee admission. If you are refused, see our guide to refused and rejected applications.
Decision Timing and Checking
The ETA guidance says most decisions take up to three working days and arrive by email. Check the spam and junk folders before contacting the authorities, because a reply can land there.
Approvals are held digitally and can be checked online, including whether one is in place and when it expires. Match that online record to the passport before you leave.
Gathering What You Need
Most delays come from a name entered differently from the passport, a photograph that fails the rules, or a travel date that has moved.
- The passport you will travel on. Note its number and expiry date.
- An email address you check. Decisions arrive by email.
- A compliant photograph. Follow the rules on our requirements page.
- Travel details. Arrival and departure dates and your accommodation.
- Status proof, if relied on. Any settlement reference or proof of a pending application.
For timing, see our UK ETA processing time guide. The basics are in the UK ETA requirements article.
Completing the Online Form
The online application has the same sequence for every nationality.
- Choose the passport you will travel on and enter its number.
- Enter your name as it appears on the passport data page.
- Upload a compliant photograph and review it before submitting.
- Describe your travel and purpose accurately.
- Pay the service fee where one applies, and keep the confirmation.
- Check for the decision email, then fly with the passport that appears in it.
Be cautious with sites that imitate government services or charge more than the official route.
Ready to begin your UK ETA application?
Apply NowCommon Mistakes
- Presenting the identity card for a UK trip. The approval is tied to the passport.
- Assuming a ten-year passport gives a ten-year approval. The approval lasts two years at most.
- Forgetting a child’s shorter passport. A five- or three-year passport can expire before the trip ends.
- Applying as an ordinary applicant with British or Irish citizenship. Such a dual citizen cannot obtain an approval.
- Reading the EU lane as an exemption. It changes the gate and the queue, not the approval rule.
- Relying on an eGate without the conditions. Access is not assured.
- Letting a pending-application proof lapse. Confirm it is still valid before travel.
- Overlooking Northern Ireland. The approval rule applies there.
- Treating an approval as a promise of entry. The officer decides.
- Assuming Registered Traveller is available. Hungary is not on the current list.
Before You Leave
- You know which passport you are using, and the approval names it.
- The passport remains valid for the whole stay.
- Every child’s passport expiry has been compared with the planned return date.
- You have not relied on the identity card for the UK trip.
- You have checked settled status, visas and other exemptions.
- Any pending-application proof is valid and with you.
- British or Irish citizens are travelling on that evidence.
- The name on the application matches the passport data page.
- Every connection has been checked for an airside or landside route.
- You are not relying on eGates or Registered Traveller.
- Each leg into Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man is planned.
- The activities you plan sit within the Visitor rules.
UK ETA FAQs for Hungarian Citizens
Do Hungarian citizens need a UK ETA?
Generally yes, for a short Visitor trip without UK permission. Hungary is on the ETA National List, so a Hungarian passport holder in that position applies for an approval. Settled status, a valid UK visa and other qualifying permissions remove the need for the journey they cover.
From what date does the requirement apply to Hungary?
For travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025. Hungary is in the same group as Austria, Czechia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece.
Can I use my Hungarian identity card for a UK trip?
Not for an approval trip. The approval is tied to the passport named in the application. A card-format Hungarian identity card may be accepted for some travel within the EEA and Switzerland, depending on the destination’s rules, and old brown book-format cards lost their validity on 3 August 2026. The UK is not among those places for an approval trip.
How long is a Hungarian passport valid?
Official Hungarian guidance gives adult passports a 10-year validity, passports for ages 6 to 18 a 5-year validity, and passports for children under 6 a 3-year validity. The approval runs for two years from grant, so check the passport expiry against the trip.
I hold settled status. Do I still need an approval?
No. Settled or pre-settled status is permission to live in the UK, and the ETA guidance lists it among the people who do not need an approval.
What about a Settlement Scheme application that is still pending?
The ETA guidance lists people waiting for a decision on an EU Settlement Scheme application as not needing an approval, provided they hold valid proof of the application. Keep that proof with the passport.
Can Hungarian passport holders use the automatic eGates?
Possibly, but do not rely on it. EU nationals use the UK/EEA lane, and automatic gates require a biometric passport symbol, age 8 or over, and valid digital immigration status or a digital exemption. The guidance does not explain how an ETA-only visitor is treated against the status condition.
Does a Hungarian approval last as long as the passport?
The approval is capped at two years from grant. If the passport named in it expires earlier, it ends then, and a longer-lived passport does not stretch it further.
I am Hungarian and British. Can I apply for an approval?
No. A dual British or Irish citizen cannot obtain an approval, and travels on the British evidence under the dual-citizen rules.
I am Hungarian and Irish. Does the same rule apply?
Irish nationality alongside Hungarian removes the approval question. The Irish passport is the document to show.
Does each child need an approval?
Where an approval is needed, yes, including babies. Each person needs an individual approval, and a parent may submit for the child, but the result is attached to the child’s passport.
Does an approval let me use the Hungarian ID card at the UK border?
No. An approval concerns the passport named in the application. The UK permits an EU national identity card to be used only in the listed circumstances, such as certain settled-status or family-permit cases.
Is a plane change at a UK airport always covered by the requirement?
A transfer kept within the secure area, away from immigration control, does not need one. A transfer that goes through the check may.
Does an approval guarantee entry?
The approval only grants permission to travel. Admission is decided at the border, where the officer may question you about the trip.
Can I make more than one trip on one approval?
Yes, while the approval remains valid. Each journey must still fit the Visitor rules, and a pattern of trips must not amount to living in the UK.
What if my approval decision has not arrived?
Check spam and junk folders, then allow for the working days the guidance describes. If an application is refused or details need changing, the route is to apply again.
Can the mobile identity app be used instead of a card or passport abroad?
No. The app can identify you inside Hungary, but a trip abroad needs a valid identity card or passport, and for a UK approval trip the passport is the document.
When can I request a new Hungarian identity card?
Not earlier than 60 days before the current card expires. Plan the renewal with that window in mind, especially if a card-format card is needed for travel to a destination that accepts it.
Is a temporary identity card good enough for a UK trip?
Official guidance notes that some countries do not accept the temporary card, so it is not a dependable basis for a UK journey. Use a valid passport, and keep the approval tied to it.
Can I set off first and wait for my approval decision while I am abroad?
No. The approval has to be in place before you travel, so a decision still pending at departure is not a basis for flying. Apply early enough that the decision arrives first.
My child is under 6. How long is their passport valid?
Official Hungarian guidance gives a passport for a child under 6 a validity of 3 years. Check that date against the trip and the approval before you apply.
