🇦🇪UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for UAE Citizens
Millions of people live in the UAE, and only some of them are Emirati. Whether an ETA is needed depends on the passport you travel on, not on your Emirates ID, your UAE Pass or your residence visa. This guide separates citizens from residents and explains each document.

Do UAE Citizens Need a UK ETA?
Briefly
In most cases, yes. The United Arab Emirates is on the ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 22 February 2024. An Emirati citizen travelling on a UAE passport for a short, eligible visit needs the ETA before departure, unless an exemption fits or UK immigration permission already covers the trip.
That wording is intentionally careful. It would be wrong to say that anyone who lives in the UAE needs an ETA, or that every Emirati always does. The rule follows the passport in your hand, so the same flight from Dubai can lead to different answers for different passengers.
The ETA is a digital permission to travel, linked to one passport. It is not a visa, it leaves no stamp, and it is no promise of admission. This page assumes you are a UAE citizen with a UAE passport, and it explains separately what to do if you are not.
When Did the UK ETA Start for UAE Citizens?
UAE nationals became subject to the ETA for travel to the UK on or after 22 February 2024, and applications opened ahead of that travel date. Only Qatar had been brought in earlier, in November 2023, so the UAE was among the first countries to use the scheme.
This matters because several recent country guides on this site refer to later dates, and a date that suits another nationality is not the UAE’s. If you are planning a trip today, the practical effect is simple: the requirement has been in place for some time and applies now.
How Does the ETA Differ from the Former Electronic Visa Waiver?
Before the ETA, UAE nationals could use the UK’s Electronic Visa Waiver to avoid a full visa for short visits. When the ETA arrived, it took over that job for the relevant travellers, and the two are not the same system.
- Follow the current ETA process. Instructions written for the old waiver are out of date.
- An old waiver does not count as an ETA, and nothing about it carries over.
- Do not rely on archived pages or forum posts describing the earlier arrangement.
We do not give any historical figures here. What counts today is the ETA rule and the passport you will use.
Which Document Is Linked to a UK ETA?
The UAE passport. It is the international travel document for Emirati citizens, and it is the one you enter in the application. After approval, the ETA and the booklet belong together.
Nothing else can take its place. An Emirates ID, UAE Pass or residence visa is not what the ETA system looks for, and none of them can be shown at a UK airport check-in or border desk instead of the passport. Because the approval is tied to the booklet, renewal or replacement matters, as the passport section further down explains.
If you hold more than one passport, say a UAE passport and another, choose which one you will present before you apply and keep to that choice. The approval follows the passport used in the application, so switching booklets at the airport defeats the purpose.
Chip-based electronic passports are the norm for Emirati travellers. A chip is a feature of the document and does not remove the ETA requirement, and it does not give access to the ordinary UK eGates, which depend on a separate nationality list.
Can I Use My Emirates ID Instead of My UAE Passport?
Emirates ID is the national identity card of the UAE, and it is held by both citizens and residents. It carries real weight in daily life inside the country, for dealings with government bodies, access to services and proof of who you are.
Two things follow for a UK trip. First, because residents hold it too, having an Emirates ID does not by itself show that you are an Emirati citizen. Second, it is not the passport linked to an ordinary ETA, and it should not be offered as a replacement for the UAE passport.
For a UK ETA trip
The card keeps its full legal and practical value in the UAE. It is simply not the document the ETA system uses. Carry the passport named in your approval.
Does UAE Pass Replace My Passport for a UK ETA?
UAE Pass is a digital identity and sign-in platform that lets you prove who you are to supported services in the UAE through your phone. It is convenient, and it is separate from both the passport and the Emirates ID.
It does not become the passport an ETA is linked to, and it has no standing at an international border. A verified account on your phone is not a travel document, so the passport still has to be in your hand when you leave.
- UAE passport: the international travel document, and the one the ETA uses.
- Emirates ID: a national identity credential for citizens and residents.
- UAE Pass: a digital identity and authentication platform for supported services.
Are You a UAE Citizen or a UAE Resident?
This is the most important question on the page. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah are home to a very large population of expatriates. Living in any of them does not make a person an Emirati citizen.
The same is true of every document that goes with residence: an Emirates ID, a residence visa, a Golden Visa, a UAE Pass account, an employment permit, property ownership or a UAE driving licence. None of these turns another country’s passport into a UAE passport, and none makes someone eligible for the ETA as a UAE citizen.
UK entry requirements depend mainly on four things: your actual passport nationality, the travel document you use, any UK immigration permission you hold, and any exemption that applies. Start with the passport and work outward from there.
Does a UAE Golden Visa Make Me Eligible for a UK ETA?
A Golden Visa is a form of long-term UAE residence. It is welcome security for the holder, but it is residence status and nothing more for UK purposes.
- It does not make the holder an Emirati citizen.
- It does not change the nationality shown in their passport.
- It does not make them eligible for the ETA as a UAE citizen.
- It does not replace any UK immigration requirement.
The same applies to every other UAE residence visa. If your passport is not a UAE passport, look up the UK position for the passport you will actually carry.
What If I Live in the UAE but I Am Not a UAE Citizen?
Many residents travel on passports from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Egypt and dozens of other countries. For all of them, the UK position is the one that applies to their own passport and status, not the Emirati one.
- An Indian passport holder living in Dubai follows the UK rule for an Indian passport.
- A Pakistani or Bangladeshi resident follows the rule for that passport.
- A Filipino or Egyptian resident does the same with theirs.
We do not set out the UK requirement for every nationality here, and nothing on this page is a visa determination for them. Check the rule for your actual passport before booking. Where you hold UK permission, that may change the picture, as described next.
What If I Already Have UK Immigration Permission?
Someone whose existing UK permission covers the journey does not also need an ETA where the current rules exempt them. That can include a valid UK visa, qualifying eVisa or digital permission, settled status, pre-settled status and other qualifying permission.
Keep your UKVI account and passport details current, and check your own documents rather than relying on a general summary. This section is not individual immigration advice, and our UK visa guide covers the wider picture.
What If I Am Emirati and British, or Emirati and Irish?
British citizens do not need an ETA, and neither do Irish citizens. If you hold one of those nationalities as well as an Emirati one, you can enter the UK in that capacity with the matching passport. We say nothing about UAE nationality law or about how the UAE treats a second nationality.
How Should Emirati Travellers Enter Their Name?
Emirati names are written in Arabic, and the passport also prints a Latin-script form. The passport is the authority. Where the application asks for the name, use the spelling and the order shown in the passport, and follow the form’s own instructions about where each element goes.
- Do not translate or transliterate your Arabic name yourself.
- Do not invent a different English spelling.
- Handle names with several elements as the passport and application instruct, without dropping or reordering any.
- Where machine-readable passport details are requested, copy what the passport shows.
We set out no naming law and no conversion rules, because a mismatch with the passport is the risk.
Do Emirati Children and Babies Need Their Own UK ETA?
Where an ETA applies, it applies to every traveller, babies included. A parent’s approval gives a child no cover, and the child uses their own passport. This page gives no advice on UAE parental-consent or exit rules. Our guide to children, babies and families has the details.
Do School Groups from the UAE Have an Exemption?
No blanket exemption exists for UAE schools. The only school-party provisions are ETA 1.9, for qualifying schools in France, and ETA 1.10, for qualifying schools in Germany. A group organised by a school in the UAE cannot rely on them.
Nationality does not rule a pupil out either. A UAE passport holder who genuinely studies at a qualifying French or German school could meet one of those provisions if every condition is satisfied, and individual exemptions or UK status may apply too.
Travelling from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Other Emirates
The ETA rule does not change with the emirate or the airport. We publish no timetables and promise no direct services, and we make no claims about immigration arrangements at any particular airport.
- Apply with the passport you will really carry.
- Check that the booking matches the passport exactly.
- Carriers can verify digital permission before boarding.
- No printed approval is needed.
- The ETA accompanies the passport and never guarantees admission.
For a sense of timing, see our guide to UK ETA processing time.
What If My UK Journey Connects Through Another Country?
Stopping in a third country does not itself alter the UK’s ETA rule, because that rule is decided by you and your passport. Passing through or entering the connecting country is a separate matter with its own rules, on which we make no determination. Check each leg yourself.
Do UAE Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
Whether you pass through UK border control decides it. A qualifying airside connection, which keeps you airside from arrival to departure, may not need an ETA. Going landside, for instance to collect checked bags or change terminals, may require one where it applies to your passport.
So neither “all transit needs an ETA” nor “no transit does” is correct. Ask your airline how the journey is ticketed, and see our transit and layovers guide.
UAE Citizens, Ireland and the UK
The Republic of Ireland is a separate country, and Northern Ireland belongs to the UK. Routing through Ireland does not remove the ETA requirement on its own. A qualifying lawful resident of the Republic of Ireland who travels to the UK from elsewhere in the Common Travel Area may fall within a narrow exemption in the rules.
Can UAE Citizens Use UK eGates?
Not on nationality alone. The ordinary eGates are open to eligible nationalities listed in the UK’s guidance, and the United Arab Emirates is not currently among them. A biometric UAE passport and an ETA do not create that eligibility, because passport technology and the nationality list are separate.
Follow the signs and the instructions of Border Force staff on arrival. An ETA never guarantees that a gate will be available or will work, and officers can direct anyone to a desk.
Can UAE Passport Holders Join Registered Traveller?
Registered Traveller is a separate programme for frequent visitors from listed countries, and the United Arab Emirates is not on the current list of eligible passports. UAE passport holders therefore cannot rely on it as a route to the ePassport gates.
The programme is also distinct from the ETA in every way. If the list were ever to change, the programme’s own conditions would apply, and we would not describe it here as something that replaces or includes the ETA. Our fees and processing options page covers our own service.
Are Contactless eGates Open to UAE Travellers?
Ordinary eGates, Registered Traveller and contactless eGates are three different things, and it is easy to blur them. The contactless rollout began in October 2026 and is initially limited to British citizens. Other nationalities that already qualify for the ordinary gates are expected to follow later.
UAE passport holders are not currently eligible for the contactless process, and a valid passport is needed in every case.
Business Travel from the UAE to the UK
With an ETA, an Emirati business traveller can do what the Visitor business rules permit: meetings, conferences, negotiations, qualifying site visits and similar permitted business. The ETA gives no general right to take employment in the UK. Our business visits guide covers the limits.
Visiting the UK from the UAE for Tourism or Family
Holidays, sightseeing, and visits to relatives and friends are some of the most common reasons for the trip, and they fall within eligible Visitor travel. See our guides to tourism and visiting family and friends.
Can UAE Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
An ETA does not itself grant ordinary employment. It helps to separate the possible categories:
- permitted Visitor business, covered under business visits
- Permitted Paid Engagements
- the Creative Worker concession
- ordinary employment, which normally needs a work visa. See the UK visa guide.
Can UAE Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
Short periods of study can fall within the Visitor rules, as our short-term study guide explains. The ETA does not replace a Student visa where one is needed, so a student starting a full course should begin with the visa guide.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid, and Can I Make Multiple Trips?
An ETA is valid for up to two years from the date of grant, or until the linked passport expires, whichever is sooner. During that time you can make multiple journeys, and each arrival is assessed under the Visitor rules. Repeated visits must not add up to living in the UK, and there is no 90 or 180 day formula. See our guide to ETA validity, multiple trips and new passports.
What If I Renew or Replace My UAE Passport?
The ETA is linked to the specific passport you applied with. Renewal, expiry, loss, theft, damage or replacement with new details all mean that the old approval does not follow you. Where an ETA applies, a new passport generally needs a new ETA, and neither Emirates ID nor UAE Pass can move it across.
How Long Can UAE Citizens Stay in the UK?
Eligible Visitor travel generally allows you to seek entry for up to six months where the Visitor requirements are met. The ETA does not itself hand over a six-month stay, and an approval that lasts two years is not two years of residence.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
The Crown Dependencies operate ETA schemes of their own, and an ETA became relevant for travel from 23 April 2026. Where the rules provide for it, a UK ETA and a Crown Dependency ETA are recognised by one another. The Common Travel Area has its own arrangements, so check the position for your island close to departure.
UK ETA Requirements for UAE Citizens
You will generally need:
- your UAE passport, the one you will really use
- an email address you can read
- a clear photograph of your face
- passport and personal details, entered exactly as printed
- answers to the application questions
- a payment method for the payment stage
An Emirates ID, a UAE Pass account or a Golden Visa is not a substitute for the passport. See the full requirements page and our fees and processing options.

Apply NowCommon UK ETA Mistakes for UAE Citizens
- Treating UAE residence as UAE citizenship. Living there does not change your passport.
- Assuming Emirates ID establishes ETA nationality. Residents hold it too.
- Trying to travel on an Emirates ID instead of a passport. It is not the ETA-linked document.
- Confusing UAE Pass with a passport. It is a digital sign-in platform.
- Believing a Golden Visa creates ETA eligibility. It is residence status only.
- Checking the rules for your residence instead of your passport. Nationality of the passport decides.
- Following old Electronic Visa Waiver instructions. The ETA is the current system.
- Using expired or replaced passport details. The approval follows the passport you applied with.
- Translating an Arabic name yourself. Use the Latin-script form in the passport.
- Assuming a biometric passport opens the ordinary eGates. The UAE is not on that list.
- Mixing up Registered Traveller, eGates and the ETA. They are three separate things.
- Counting on a parent’s ETA to cover a child. Each traveller needs their own.
- Expecting a UAE school group to inherit the France or Germany exemption. Those provisions are specific.
- Making blanket assumptions about airport transit. Airside and landside differ.
- Reading the ETA as a work permit. It gives no ordinary employment right.
- Treating approval as a guarantee of entry. The border officer decides.
Before You Travel from the UAE to the UK
- You know which passport you are travelling on.
- You have confirmed whether an ETA, UK status or an exemption applies.
- The passport in your bag is the one named in the ETA.
- Your Emirates ID is not being treated as a travel document.
- UAE Pass is not being relied on at the border.
- Your residence status is not being mistaken for citizenship.
- The name on your application matches the Latin-script form in the passport.
- Each child has been checked individually.
- If it is a school trip, nobody assumes the France or Germany rules reach the UAE.
- You have allowed for a renewed or replaced passport.
- You are not counting on eGate access.
- Your connection or transit has been checked.
- Booking and passport details match.
- The purpose of the trip fits the Visitor rules.
UK ETA FAQs for UAE Citizens
Do UAE citizens need a UK ETA?
Generally, yes. A UAE citizen using a UAE passport for an eligible short visit to the UK needs an ETA first, unless an exemption applies or they already hold qualifying UK immigration permission.
When did the UK ETA start for UAE citizens?
The United Arab Emirates is in the group of nationalities that needed an ETA for travel to the UK on or after 22 February 2024. That is an earlier date than the one that applies to many other countries.
Did the ETA replace the Electronic Visa Waiver for Emiratis?
Yes. The ETA took over from the old Electronic Visa Waiver for UAE nationals. They are different systems, so follow today’s ETA process and not old EVW instructions.
Do people who live in Dubai need a UK ETA?
Living in Dubai, or anywhere in the UAE, does not decide the question. The UK looks at the passport you travel on, any UK permission you hold and any exemption that applies.
Does a UAE residence visa qualify me for the ETA as a UAE citizen?
No. A residence visa is a UAE immigration status. It does not make anyone an Emirati citizen or change the nationality of their passport.
Does a UAE Golden Visa make me eligible?
Not by itself. A Golden Visa is long-term UAE residence. It does not establish Emirati citizenship, change your passport nationality or replace UK immigration requirements.
Can I use my Emirates ID instead of my passport?
No. Emirates ID is an identity credential held by citizens and by residents. It is not the passport an ETA is linked to, and holding one does not show that you are an Emirati citizen.
Does UAE Pass replace my passport?
No. UAE Pass is a digital identity and sign-in platform for supported services in the UAE. It cannot be linked to an ETA and is not a travel document.
Which document is linked to my ETA?
The passport you enter in the application, which for an Emirati traveller is the UAE passport. Present that same passport when you board and at UK border control.
I am an Indian citizen living in the UAE. Do I follow the UAE rules?
No. The rule that applies is the one for the passport you will actually use, which here is an Indian passport. Check the UK requirement for that nationality.
Do Pakistani, Filipino or Egyptian residents of the UAE use the Emirati rule?
No. Residents travelling on other countries’ passports follow the UK position for those passports, whatever their UAE residence status is.
Do Emirati children need their own ETA?
Where an ETA applies, yes. Every traveller needs one, and a parent’s approval does not cover a child, who uses their own passport.
Can Emirati citizens use UK eGates?
Not on nationality alone. The UAE is not on the ordinary list of eGate nationalities, and a chipped passport plus an ETA does not change that.
Can UAE passport holders join Registered Traveller?
Not at present. The current Registered Traveller passport list does not include the United Arab Emirates, so it is not an option for UAE passport holders unless that list changes.
Do I need an ETA to change planes at a UK airport?
Not for a qualifying airside connection where you never pass UK border control. Landside transit may need one, where the ETA applies to your passport.
How long is an ETA valid, and can I make several trips?
It lasts up to two years, or until the linked passport expires if sooner, and allows multiple journeys while valid. Each trip is assessed under the Visitor rules.
Do I need a new ETA after renewing my passport?
Generally yes, where an ETA applies. The approval belongs to the passport named in the application, and neither Emirates ID nor UAE Pass can carry it over.
Can I work or study with an ETA, and does it guarantee entry?
It gives no ordinary employment right and does not replace a Student visa. Some short activities fit the Visitor rules. It is permission to travel, and the border officer decides on admission.
