🇸🇪UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Swedish Citizens
Sweden has two different ID cards, a widely used digital ID in BankID, and full membership of the EU and Schengen. This guide sorts out which of these matters for the UK ETA, and what to check before you leave.

Do Swedish Citizens Need a UK ETA?
Summary
Normally, yes. Sweden is item 81 in paragraph 1.1(d) of the ETA National List, which governs journeys made on or after 2 April 2025. A Swedish citizen who flies, sails or drives to Britain on a Swedish passport for a short, eligible visit should obtain the approval before leaving, unless an exemption fits or UK immigration permission is already held.
We hedge with “normally” because Swedish nationality opens the question and does not close it. The result for any one traveller comes down to three points: the passport they use, any UK status they hold, and whether a recognised exemption describes them. For most visitors from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö or elsewhere, the ETA will apply.
The approval is a digital permission to travel, linked to one passport. It is not a visa, nothing is added to the passport, and it makes no promise about admission. You arrange it before departure, and the officer at the border decides on arrival.
Can Swedish Citizens Use a National ID Card to Travel to the UK?
For ordinary ETA travel, carry the passport. The Swedish national identity card is a real travel document in many European countries, but a visit to Britain on an ETA is tied to a passport. It would be wrong to say Swedish ID cards are never travel documents, and equally wrong to say any Swedish citizen can enter the UK on one.
The Swedish Police issue the national identity card to Swedish citizens. It records identity and citizenship, and within the EU, the EEA and Switzerland it can be used for travel wherever it is accepted. Many Swedes treat it as an everyday document for holidays in Europe, and it is a reasonable assumption that it might work for Britain too.
Since Brexit, though, travel to and from the UK has followed a different logic. The ETA is attached to a passport, and the airline, rail company or border officer will expect that passport. Swedish guidance for travellers to the UK likewise points to a valid passport, apart from special rules for people protected under the Withdrawal Agreement. An ordinary visitor should therefore plan on the passport named in the application.
Can Some Swedish Status Holders Still Use a National Identity Card?
Yes, but only within a limited group. UK guidance lets certain EU, EEA and Swiss nationals enter the UK on a valid national identity card when they hold a protected form of status. The categories include:
- EU Settlement Scheme settled status;
- EU Settlement Scheme pre-settled status;
- an EU Settlement Scheme family permit that is still valid;
- a Frontier Worker permit;
- S2 Healthcare Visitor status;
- a pending Scheme application that meets the conditions the guidance lays down.
The guidance also looks at the card itself. Cards meeting the international biometric standard remain acceptable for this group, and cards that do not can still be used by the same group for now, until the UK announces otherwise. Details change from time to time, so read current UK guidance close to your departure date.
Two travellers, two positions
- An ordinary Swedish visitor travels on a passport and, where an ETA applies, holds the approval tied to it.
- A Swedish citizen in a protected category may use a valid Swedish national identity card where the guidance allows. Their status normally means they need no ETA at all.
This page cannot judge whether you qualify, and it is not a guide to obtaining status.
Can I Use a Swedish Tax Agency ID Card to Travel to the UK?
No. The identity card issued by the Swedish Tax Agency is used for identification inside Sweden. It is not a travel document and cannot replace a passport on a journey to the UK.
Sweden runs two separate card systems, and the names are easy to confuse. The Police card is the national identity card, and it is a recognised travel document in several European countries. The Tax Agency card is a domestic proof of identity, issued to people who need to prove who they are in everyday dealings, and it does not show citizenship in the same way.
Anyone who holds only the Tax Agency card therefore has no travel document for international journeys. For the UK ETA, they need a passport. Check which card you hold, because the two look similar but do different jobs.
Can BankID Replace a Passport for UK ETA Travel?
No. BankID is a digital identification and authentication service. It is not the physical travel document an ETA is connected to.
BankID is part of daily life in Sweden, used to log in to banks, public services and many companies, and it is natural to wonder whether it can prove identity abroad too. For the UK ETA, though, the point is narrow. The approval is linked to a passport, and a login service does not function as one, either in the application or at the border.
What If I Have Settled or Pre-Settled Status?
Anyone who holds valid, qualifying UK immigration status is outside the ETA requirement altogether. Plenty of Swedes have built careers in Britain, in technology, design, healthcare and research among other fields, and some of them will be in exactly this position.
Which document to travel on is a separate decision. A Swedish passport can be used, and so, within the protected categories described above, can a valid national identity card. Keep the document consistent with the record in your online UK immigration account, and update that record whenever you get a new passport. Treat this as a signpost rather than a tutorial on the Scheme.
Does a Swedish Residence Permit Determine UK ETA Eligibility?
It does not decide it alone. A Swedish residence permit documents someone's right to live in Sweden. It tells the UK nothing about ETA eligibility, and it cannot be used in place of a passport.
Consider a foreign national who lives in Sweden. The UK looks at which passport they will show, at whatever UK status they may already hold, and at whether any exemption applies. The Swedish permit sits outside that analysis.
For questions about Swedish immigration rules, go to the Swedish authorities. This page deals with the British side only.
What If I Live in Sweden but Hold Another Passport?
Where you are registered and which nationality your passport shows are different things, and only the latter matters to the ETA. Residents of Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala or a village in Norrland should look up the UK rule for the nationality in the passport they will actually present at the border.
Cases involving other nationalities are beyond the scope of this guide.
Does the Nordic Passport Union Remove the UK ETA Requirement?
It does not. Sweden is part of Nordic passport cooperation, yet the United Kingdom is outside it, so the arrangement gives no exemption from the UK ETA.
Within the Nordic region, crossing a border can feel almost like driving between counties. That ease is a feature of the Nordic members' own arrangement. It does not travel with you to Britain. Nor is it the same thing as Schengen, whose membership overlaps with the Nordic group but is not identical.
Arriving in Britain, a Swede follows UK passport and ETA rules in the same way as any other eligible visitor.
Sweden, Schengen and the UK ETA
Sweden belongs to the EU and takes part in Schengen, while the UK stands outside Schengen. Neither of those facts relieves a Swedish passport holder of the ETA requirement.
- Being an EU citizen does not exempt a Swedish traveller from the ETA on its own.
- Schengen rights end at the edge of the Schengen Area, and they do not substitute for UK permission.
- A UK ETA gives no permission to enter Sweden or any other Schengen state.
UK ETA vs ETIAS for Swedish Travellers
Two similar acronyms, two unconnected schemes.
- UK ETA: live now, for eligible journeys to the United Kingdom.
- ETIAS: a European scheme that has not started. Applications are not being taken.
- Not interchangeable: holding one tells you nothing about the other.
We state no ETIAS charge and no launch date. A website that asks for money to file an ETIAS application today should be treated with suspicion.
Flying from Sweden to the UK with an ETA
The plane is the quickest route from Sweden to Britain, with services from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and further airports. We name the cities only to give a sense of place. Departure airport never changes the ETA analysis, which follows the passenger and the passport.
- Fly on the very passport that your approval is attached to.
- Make sure the booking spells your name, and records your passport, as the document does.
- Allow for the possibility that the carrier verifies the digital permission at check-in or boarding.
- No paper ETA is issued, and the approval can never stand in for the passport.
- Do not read the approval as an assurance of admission.
Fixing a booking error a week out costs little. Fixing it at the desk can cost the flight, so check early.
Do Swedish Citizens Need an ETA When Driving to Britain?
Anyone driving from Sweden will normally cross Denmark first, then continue through Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France before the tunnel or ferry crossing. Roads vary, and nothing here is a route recommendation.
A vehicle brings no exemption with it. Each person in the car is a traveller in their own right, and everyone within the scheme needs an approval connected to their own passport. The driver cannot answer for passengers, and the motorway, border post or crossing you pick has no effect.
Travelling from Sweden to the UK by Train
Stockholm and London are not linked by any direct passenger train. Travelling by rail means chaining several connections through Denmark, Germany and beyond, then joining an international service to Britain, and the whole trip takes the best part of a day or longer. Services and timetables are changing, so we leave the specifics to the operators.
None of that changes the ETA analysis. It turns on who you are and what status you hold, not on where the first train left. If the requirement covers you, obtain the approval before the last leg into Britain and keep the linked passport within reach at each change.
Do Swedish Citizens Need an ETA When Travelling to Britain by Sea?
Stepping off a ship does not exempt anyone. We do not describe any direct Sweden–UK passenger ferry as running now, so a traveller who lands at a British port has usually boarded at a continental harbour as one stage of a longer trip. The same test applies at the end: does this person need an ETA? If yes, it must already be in place.
Is the UK ETA Only Required for Flights?
No. When an ETA applies, it applies whatever the means of travel.
- Aircraft: carriers may look for permission ahead of boarding.
- Cars: each occupant stands on their own.
- Linked trains: swapping trains in other countries does not take you out of the scheme.
- Ships: the crossing carries no exemption.
Many people picture the ETA as an airline matter. In fact it is a requirement for arriving at the UK border.
Do Swedish Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
Do not assume a Swedish school trip is covered by the French or German provisions. The rules offer school-party relief only in ETA 1.9 (France) and ETA 1.10 (Germany). There is no Swedish counterpart.
Choirs, football teams, exchange classes and school orchestras from Sweden do visit Britain. Whoever leads the trip should plan on every pupil within the requirement holding a personal approval linked to their own passport.
- French and German school-party terms give a Swedish group nothing to rely on.
- A roster, or an official-looking letter from the school, does not stand in for an approval.
- Teachers and accompanying parents are also travellers, and each needs to check their own situation.
None of this rules out an exemption for an individual pupil. A child with British or Irish citizenship, or with valid UK immigration permission, may fall outside the requirement for that reason. Exemptions belong to the person, never to the outing.
Do Swedish Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?
Where the ETA applies, it is needed one traveller at a time, whatever the age. A baby who has a passport is a traveller in the same way as an adult. An approval cannot be lent to a child, and one application never covers a whole family.
On a family trip, handle each child as a case of their own: collect every passport, note each expiry date, and apply for every person who needs an approval. Our guide to UK ETA for children, babies and families deals with the typical questions.
Swedish Citizens Who Are Also British
British citizens are not required to hold an ETA, and a person who has British citizenship cannot currently be granted one. A Swedish-British dual citizen is therefore not in the same position as a Swedish-only visitor.
The practical issue is documentation. Be ready to show British citizenship when travelling to the UK, which usually means a current British passport. Using a Swedish passport and an ETA instead is not a way around that. This guide gives no view on nationality law in Sweden or the UK.
Swedish Citizens Who Are Also Irish
Irish citizens can travel to the UK without an ETA. A Swede who also holds Irish citizenship may rely on that, and an Irish passport is the usual way of showing it. Whether a particular person is an Irish citizen is a matter of Irish law, and we do not decide it here.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Swedish Citizens?
An ETA is good for up to two years from the day it is granted, or until the linked passport expires if that falls earlier. Someone with ten months left on a Swedish passport will end up with roughly ten months of approval, not twenty-four.
During that time you can make as many separate journeys as you need, each one tested against the Visitor rules. The ETA is not a residence permission, and it does not open the door to an unlimited stay. For more on repeat trips and validity, see our article on ETA validity, repeat trips and new passports.
What If I Renew or Replace My Swedish Passport?
A fresh ETA is generally needed whenever the passport changes, because the approval is bound to the one named in the application. Situations that bring this about include:
- Routine renewal of the passport used for the application.
- The passport running out before the approval would have ended.
- Loss or theft, with a replacement issued.
- Damage that means a new passport is needed.
- New personal details that lead to a reissued document.
Before departure, lay the passport you plan to carry next to the one in your approval. Where they differ, make a new application. If you hold UK status, also bring the passport recorded on your online account up to date.
How Long Can Swedish Citizens Stay in the UK?
A qualifying Visitor can usually seek entry for up to six months at a time, if the Visitor rules are met. That marks the upper limit of what an officer may grant, and the ETA does not itself confer it.
Be careful not to merge two different measures. Validity describes the period in which you may travel, so a two-year approval is not a two-year stay. How long you may remain is decided by the officer on arrival, and the answer can be well under six months.
Can Swedish Citizens Make Frequent UK Trips on One ETA?
Many Swedes go back and forth to Britain, for work, for relatives, for holidays or for quick breaks. One valid ETA can cover a run of journeys, with a few cautions:
- Every visit is assessed under the Visitor rules, and each arrival stands alone.
- A pattern of very frequent or back-to-back stays can prompt questions if it begins to resemble living in the UK.
- Short stays strung together are not a legitimate way to settle in Britain.
- The UK does not apply a rolling 90/180-day count. Officers consider why you are coming and how your visits fit together.
If you are in the country a lot, have a straightforward explanation for each trip ready.
Business Travel from Sweden to the UK
Companies from Sweden in engineering, telecoms, gaming, retail, life sciences and other sectors trade closely with Britain. As a Visitor, a business traveller can do a range of things, such as:
- go to meetings and conferences;
- negotiate and conclude contracts;
- carry out site visits that remain within the Visitor rules;
- engage in other business activity that the Visitor rules permit.
This is not the same as taking a job in the UK. For the details, see our page on UK ETA for business visits.
Can Swedish Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
An ETA is only a permission to travel. It does not let anyone take employment in Britain, because the right to work comes from the immigration rules. A few arrangements sit near that boundary, and each is distinct from ordinary employment:
- Visitor business activity, as above.
- Permitted Paid Engagements, explained in our guide to UK ETA for permitted paid engagements.
- The Creative Worker concession, set out in our creative worker guide.
If what you want is a regular post, a contract or a longer placement, our UK visa guide introduces the relevant routes. Starting work on the strength of an ETA alone would be a mistake.
Can Swedish Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
A short spell of study can sit inside the Visitor rules, so an ETA may be enough for a brief course, a language class or a short placement. Longer or different programmes might call for another kind of permission. See UK ETA for short-term study for where the limits lie, and the UK visa guide for anything beyond them.
Visiting the UK from Sweden for Tourism or Family
Holidays, city breaks, sightseeing and time with relatives or friends are typical Visitor journeys. A Swedish passport holder on one of them will usually need an ETA, which can be reused on later trips while it stays valid.
We cover these trips in more depth in our tourism guide and in the guide to visiting family and friends, including the point at which a stay with relatives begins to look like something else.
Do Swedish Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
The deciding factor is whether the connection takes you through UK border control. If you stay airside for the whole connection and qualify, you may be exempt. If you must go landside, for instance to change terminals or reclaim baggage, an ETA may be required where it applies to your passport.
Before choosing an itinerary that touches Britain, read our guide to transit and layovers and ask the airline how your own routing is handled.
Sweden, Britain and Ireland
The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK, but Northern Ireland is. A flight from Stockholm to Belfast is therefore travel to the UK, and a flight from Stockholm to Dublin is not.
Stopping in Ireland first does not automatically cancel the ETA requirement for a later crossing into the UK. The exemption for lawful residents of the Republic is for people who live there and come to the UK from elsewhere in the Common Travel Area. A Swedish visitor spending a long weekend in Dublin before heading north is not in that category.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
The three Crown Dependencies opened their own ETA schemes on 9 April 2026, and an ETA became relevant for travel from 23 April 2026. Where the rules provide for it, a UK ETA and a Crown Dependency ETA are recognised by each other. Because the Common Travel Area has its own arrangements, check the position for your chosen island shortly before departure.
Can Swedish Citizens Use UK eGates?
Swedish nationals are in the EU group that may use the UK's automated passport gates, provided these conditions are satisfied:
- a biometric passport is presented;
- the traveller is 8 or older;
- anyone aged 8 to 17 is accompanied by an adult;
- the traveller stands at least 120 cm tall;
- whatever digital permission, status or exemption applies is in place.
Because the gates are passport-based, someone who arrives with a national identity card is not eligible for them and will be seen at a staffed desk. Even with a passport, a gate is never guaranteed, and the machine can refer you to an officer.
Contactless gates are a different scheme
Contactless eGates are a newer arrangement that starts out limited to British citizens. Qualifying for the standard gates does not give access to the contactless ones, and Swedish travellers should not plan on them under present guidance.
UK ETA Requirements for Swedish Citizens
Before beginning an application, gather the following:
- the Swedish passport you will take on the trip;
- an email account you can open, as the decision is sent there;
- a digital photograph that satisfies the published standards;
- personal and passport information copied exactly from the document;
- truthful answers to the application questions;
- a method of payment for the final step.
Each of these is covered in more detail on our UK ETA requirements page, and our fees page sets out the options and charges for applications made through this site.

Common UK ETA Mistakes for Swedish Citizens
- Assuming the national ID card from the Police can replace the passport on an ordinary ETA journey. It cannot.
- Confusing the Police ID card with the Tax Agency ID card. They are different documents with different purposes.
- Using the Tax Agency card as if it were a travel document. It is for identification inside Sweden.
- Treating BankID as a travel document. It is a digital identification service.
- Thinking Nordic passport cooperation extends to Britain. The UK is outside it.
- Mixing Schengen up with the UK ETA. They belong to different systems.
- Mixing ETIAS up with the UK ETA. ETIAS is separate and is not operating at present.
- Expecting a Swedish school group to share the French or German exemption. It does not.
- Believing a road, rail or sea route avoids the ETA. The requirement attaches to the person.
- Believing the ETA is just for flights. It follows you however you arrive.
- Travelling on a replacement passport when the ETA is tied to the old one. You will usually need a new approval.
- Expecting one parent's ETA to cover the children. Each traveller needs their own.
- Reading the ETA as a work permit. It gives no such permission.
- Reading approval as a guarantee of entry. The border officer decides.
- Mistaking Ireland for Northern Ireland. Only Northern Ireland is in the UK.
Before You Travel from Sweden to the UK
- Whether an ETA, an exemption or UK status covers you has been settled.
- The passport in your bag is the one named in the approval.
- The difference between the Police ID card and the Tax Agency ID card is clear to you.
- BankID has not been mistaken for a travel passport.
- If you rely on the protected-status ID-card rules, you have confirmed that your status and card qualify.
- Nordic and Schengen arrangements have not been confused with the UK requirement.
- Each child has been checked as an individual traveller.
- On a school trip, no one is counting on the France or Germany provisions.
- Any recent passport renewal or replacement has been dealt with.
- Flight, road, rail or ferry arrangements are confirmed.
- Names and passport details on the bookings match the passport.
- The reason for the trip fits within the Visitor rules.
- The ETA is linked to the passport you will really use.
UK ETA FAQs for Swedish Citizens
Do Swedish citizens need a UK ETA?
Normally yes. Sweden is item 81 in paragraph 1.1(d) of the ETA National List, which governs journeys made on or after 2 April 2025. A Swedish passport holder making a short visit to Britain needs the approval before departure, unless an exemption fits or UK immigration permission is already held. That is different from saying every Swedish citizen always needs one.
When did the ETA start to apply to Swedish citizens?
It covers travel to the UK from 2 April 2025. The application route had opened on 5 March 2025.
Can I use my Swedish national ID card instead of a passport to enter the UK?
Not as an ordinary visitor. The ETA is linked to a passport, and for the UK the passport is what a Swedish visitor carries. The police-issued card is a recognised travel document in many European countries, but that does not carry over to ordinary ETA travel. A narrow group of protected status holders is treated differently under separate UK rules.
What is the difference between the Police national ID card and the Tax Agency ID card?
The Swedish Police issue the national identity card to Swedish citizens, and it can serve as a travel document in the EU, EEA and Switzerland where accepted. The Swedish Tax Agency issues a separate identity card that is used for identification inside Sweden and is not a travel document.
Can a Swedish Tax Agency ID card be used for UK travel?
No. It is not a travel document for international journeys, so it cannot replace a passport on a trip to the UK.
Can BankID replace a passport?
No. BankID is a digital identification and authentication service. It is not the physical travel document an ETA is linked to, and it plays no part in an ETA application or at the border.
Does having settled or pre-settled status mean I can skip the ETA?
Yes. Valid qualifying UK status takes you outside the requirement. That status still comes with its own expectations about travel documents, so read them before you go.
Can qualifying status holders use a Swedish national ID card?
In certain protected categories, yes, under separate UK rules written for EU, EEA and Swiss nationals with qualifying status. It is a status-based allowance and not a general option for Swedish visitors.
Does my Swedish residence permit change ETA eligibility?
On its own it does not. A permit evidences a right to live in Sweden, whereas UK eligibility is driven by the passport shown, any UK status and any exemption.
I live in Sweden but hold another passport. What applies?
Where you live is not the test. The UK looks at the nationality in the passport you present, so find the rule for that nationality.
Does the Nordic Passport Union apply to trips to the UK?
No. It simplifies movement among the Nordic countries, and the UK is not a member. It provides no exemption from the UK ETA.
Is Sweden in the EU and in Schengen?
Yes to both. Sweden is an EU member and takes part in Schengen. Neither fact removes the UK requirement.
Is the UK ETA the same as ETIAS, and is ETIAS running?
They are different schemes. ETIAS is a European system that is not currently operating, with no applications being collected. An approval under one is of no use for the other.
Do Swedish school groups get an exemption?
Generally not. School-party relief in the present rules names France and Germany, and nothing equivalent exists for Sweden. A single pupil can still be exempt on another ground, such as British or Irish citizenship.
Does a Swedish baby need an ETA?
Yes, wherever the requirement applies. Every traveller, an infant included, must have an approval connected to their own passport.
How long does an ETA last, and what happens if my passport is renewed?
It lasts up to two years from the grant date, or until the linked passport expires if that is sooner. A renewed passport normally means a new ETA, since the approval belongs to the passport named in the application.
Are Swedish passport holders allowed to use the eGates?
Yes, when present conditions are met, because Sweden is in the eligible EU group. The passport has to be biometric, the traveller at least 8 (with an adult between 8 and 17) and at least 120 cm tall, and any digital permission, status or exemption that applies must be in place. Someone holding only an identity card cannot use the passport gates, and no gate is guaranteed.
Is admission to the UK assured once I hold an ETA?
No. The approval lets you travel, and a Border Force officer makes the call on admission when you arrive.
