🇪🇸UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Spanish Citizens
Spanish citizens travelling on a Spanish passport generally need a UK ETA for an eligible short trip to the United Kingdom, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission. For an ordinary ETA traveller, the passport is the document to use, not a DNI or a residence card.

Do Spanish Citizens Need a UK ETA?
The short answer
Generally, yes. Spain is item 80 on the UK’s ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025, with no Spain-specific condition attached to that entry. A Spanish citizen travelling on a Spanish passport for an eligible short stay needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission. Not every Spanish traveller is in the same position, so check the exemptions in this guide before you assume either way.
Spanish travellers often plan UK trips around the Spanish school year, long weekends or a holiday in London and the countryside. The approval is a separate step, and it applies whether you go by air, rail, road or sea. Apply online or in the UK ETA app, keep the approval email, and travel on the passport named in the application.
Can Spanish Citizens Travel to the UK with a DNI?
For an ordinary Spanish visitor under the ETA rules, use a passport. The ETA is linked to the passport named in the application. A DNI alone is not the document for ordinary ETA travel.
The DNI is the Spanish national identity document, and it is valid in Spain. That does not make it the travel document for UK ETA travel. An ordinary Spanish traveller who needs an ETA should travel on the passport linked to that ETA.
The ordinary traveller and the status-based holder
There is a narrower position for some people with UK status. Current UK guidance allows qualifying EU, EEA and Swiss nationals within the EU Settlement Scheme cohort to continue to use a valid national identity card for travel and entry. People in that position may not need an ETA in the first place, because status is one of the listed exemptions. The position is tied to the status and to the documents registered on the traveller’s UK immigration record.
- An ordinary Spanish visitor without UK status needs a passport and, where an ETA applies, an ETA linked to that passport.
- A qualifying UK-status holder should check which document their status requires before travel, and keep their status record available.
- Do not conclude that a Spanish DNI is never accepted, and do not conclude that all Spaniards can enter on a DNI. Both statements are wrong.
The rules for identity cards in this area have changed more than once, so check current UK guidance before you rely on any identity card. This guide does not give immigration advice on individual status.
Does a Spanish TIE or Residence Card Qualify You for a UK ETA?
No, not by itself. A TIE or Spanish residence permit establishes residence in Spain. It does not replace a passport for travel, and it does not decide UK ETA eligibility.
For a person who is not a Spanish citizen but lives in Spain on a TIE or residence card, the UK requirement normally depends on the passport nationality, on any UK immigration status, and on any applicable exemption. Spanish residence is not the question the UK asks.
- A TIE or residence card does not make someone eligible for an ETA.
- It does not replace the passport used for travel.
- A non-Spanish resident of Spain should check the rules for their passport nationality.
This guide gives no Spanish immigration advice. Questions about residence and the TIE belong with the Spanish authorities or a qualified adviser.
What If I Have Settled or Pre-Settled Status?
Valid qualifying UK immigration status, such as settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, means an ETA is not required. That is one of the listed exemptions.
The travel-document rules for status holders are different from those for ordinary ETA travellers, which is why the DNI section above matters for this group. Keep your status record and the documents it requires with you. A pending application to the scheme also changes the picture, so check your position if no decision has been made.
This is not a guide to the scheme. If you have status, the questions are about your permission rather than an ETA application.
Is the UK ETA Part of Schengen?
No. The United Kingdom is outside the Schengen Area. Spain’s Schengen membership does not exempt Spanish citizens from the UK ETA rules.
- Schengen residence and travel rights do not replace a UK requirement.
- A UK ETA does not provide permission to enter Spain or any other Schengen country.
- Each country sets its own entry rules, so check the rules for each destination on your trip.
UK ETA vs ETIAS
- The UK ETA is the operating UK travel-authorisation system for eligible travel to the UK.
- ETIAS is a separate European travel-authorisation system. It is not currently in operation, and applications are not being collected.
- The two are not interchangeable. An approval under one does not satisfy the other.
No launch date is given here, because the timetable has changed more than once. Check the European information before any trip that involves the EU. Do not pay anyone who offers to submit an ETIAS application on your behalf while the system is not operating.
Do Spanish Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
Spanish school groups do not have a school-party exemption. The school-party exemptions in the current ETA rules refer to France and to Germany. Nothing in them refers to Spain.
A Spanish pupil who is an ETA national generally needs their own ETA where an ETA is required. The only route out is an individual exemption that applies to that pupil, such as British or Irish citizenship, or valid UK immigration permission. Other exemptions in the rules also apply to individuals, and each one must be checked against that person’s own circumstances.
- Do not assume that the France or Germany school-trip exemption applies to a Spanish school group. It does not.
- Do not assume the school or the trip organiser has a special arrangement with the UK. Ask for that confirmation in writing if one exists.
- Each pupil, and each accompanying adult, should check their own position before the trip.
This does not mean that no Spanish schoolchild can ever be exempt. It means that the exemption is individual, and a school group does not get one simply by being a school group.
Do Spanish Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?
Where an ETA is required, each traveller needs their own ETA, including babies and children. A parent’s ETA does not cover a child, and a child’s approval is linked to that child’s own passport.
Ordinary family travel is different from school-group travel. A family holiday does not carry any school-party exemption. For the practical steps for each child’s application, see our guide to children, babies and families.
What If I Live in Spain but Hold Another Passport?
Spanish residence does not itself determine UK ETA eligibility. That includes holders of a TIE, a Spanish residence permit, a work, student or family residence, or a long-term residence.
The travel passport and any UK immigration status decide the relevant requirement. A person living in Madrid or Barcelona on a passport from another country is assessed under the rules for that passport. This guide gives no Spanish immigration advice.
Spanish Citizens Who Are Also British
British citizens do not need an ETA, and a dual British citizen cannot obtain one. Travel as a British citizen, using the documents current UK guidance accepts.
A valid British passport is the clearest proof of British status. Where another valid passport carries a certificate of entitlement showing the right of abode in the UK, that can also be used.
This section explains only the UK consequences. It does not give Spanish dual-nationality advice, and it does not decide whether anyone is British. Do not apply for an ETA on a Spanish passport to get round missing British documents.
Spanish Citizens Who Are Also Irish
Irish citizens do not need an ETA and cannot obtain one. Travel on your Irish passport if you hold one, since it is the clearest way to show Irish status for UK travel.
This is a UK-only explanation. It does not decide anyone’s nationality.
Flying from Spain to the UK with an ETA
Many Spanish travellers fly from Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante, Palma or Tenerife. The ETA question is the same from every departure airport.
- Use the passport linked to your ETA, and check that the booking details match it.
- Airlines may check the travel authorisation before boarding, so keep the approval email to hand.
- The ETA does not replace the passport.
- An ETA does not guarantee admission. The Border Force officer decides on arrival.
Do the Rules Change for the Canary or Balearic Islands?
No. The departure region does not change ETA eligibility. A Spanish citizen travelling from the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands or mainland Spain follows the same UK ETA rules, because the requirement depends on nationality and status rather than the place of departure.
Travelling from Spain to the UK by Train
The international rail services to Britain do not start in Spain. Travellers from Spain usually connect through France, then board a service to the UK.
The route does not remove the ETA requirement where it applies. The requirement is based on UK travel status, not on the fact that the journey began by train. Check your rail arrangements with the operator when you book.
Do You Need a UK ETA When Driving from Spain to Britain?
Some travellers drive through France and continue to Britain by the Channel Tunnel or by ferry. The mode of transport does not create an ETA exemption.
- Each person in the vehicle is checked individually.
- Children in the car are covered by the child rules, not the driver’s approval.
- Check the crossing arrangements with the operator, since they change.
Ferry and Sea Travel from Spain
Where an ETA applies, arriving by sea does not remove the requirement. The ETA depends on the traveller’s status, not the route.
This page does not name ferry routes or operators, and it gives no schedules. Confirm the arrangements with the company you book with, and make sure each traveller has the ETA their own passport requires.
Is the UK ETA Only for Flights?
No. The ETA applies to eligible travel to the UK, whatever the mode of transport.
Air, rail through France, road through the Channel Tunnel and sea crossings all count as travel to the UK. Where the ETA applies, the mode of transport does not by itself remove it.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Spanish Citizens?
An ETA lasts for up to two years from the date it is granted, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever is sooner. Within that period you can make more than one journey, with each arrival judged under the Visitor rules.
The validity is not two years of continuous residence in the UK. For the detail on multiple trips and passport changes, read our guide to ETA validity and new passports.
Renewing or Replacing Your Spanish Passport
An ETA is tied to the passport it was granted on. Once you hold a new passport, the old approval no longer covers you, and you should apply on the new document where an ETA applies. Renewal, expiry, loss, theft, damage and a change of personal details all have that result.
If you renew close to a trip, use the new passport for the application rather than waiting for the old one to run out.
How Long Can Spanish Citizens Stay in the UK?
Plan each visit around the Visitor ceiling, not around how long your ETA runs. Where the rules are met, a stay of up to six months can be sought. The ETA itself does not give you that time. The officer on arrival decides what you are allowed.
Can Spanish Citizens Make Frequent UK Trips on One ETA?
Yes, while the ETA is valid and you travel on the same passport. Business travellers, family visitors and people who make regular city trips all use this flexibility.
Each visit is judged under the Visitor rules. The ETA does not allow you to live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, and there is no 90-day or 180-day formula to apply here. Owning a property in the UK does not create an immigration right, so a property does not change the analysis.
Business Travel from Spain to the UK
Spanish firms in tourism, food and drink, engineering, renewable energy and professional services often send people to the UK for short trips. Many fit the Visitor business rules: meetings, negotiations, conferences and some site visits.
What the ETA does not allow is ordinary employment for a UK organisation, or serving UK clients as if you were based in Britain. The boundary is set out in our UK ETA for business visits guide.
Can Spanish Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
No, not in ordinary employment.
A Visitor may attend certain business meetings and similar activities. Taking a post, earning from a UK employer, or working for UK clients on a regular basis falls outside that. The narrow permitted paid engagements and the Creative Worker concession have their own conditions, set out in the guides below.
Anyone planning longer-term employment should look at the UK Visa Guide early, because the right route depends on the job, the length of stay and personal circumstances.
Can Spanish Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
A short course that fits the Visitor framework, such as an intensive language course or a summer programme, can be attended on an ETA. Our short-term study guide sets out the conditions. Study beyond that scope, including a degree, needs a different permission, so an ETA is the wrong tool for a long course.
Visiting the UK from Spain for Tourism or Family
City breaks, holidays and visits to friends and family are among the most common reasons Spanish travellers come to the UK. These fall within the eligible short Visitor framework, subject to the rules for each visit.
- Holidays and city breaks. See UK ETA for tourism.
- Visits to friends and family. See UK ETA for visiting family and friends.
Do Spanish Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
The question turns on border control. If your connection keeps you airside and you do not pass UK border control before the onward flight, a qualifying airside transit is exempt. If you collect bags, leave the secure area or otherwise pass border control, the connection is landside, and an ETA can apply depending on your passport. The transit and layovers guide covers the detail.
Spain, Britain and Ireland
Ireland and Northern Ireland are different places for this purpose. The Republic is outside the UK and sets its own rules. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so the ETA question applies there. A route through Dublin does not remove the requirement for the UK leg.
The residence-based exemption is narrow. It covers people who live in Ireland and travel into the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. It does not cover visitors who pass through Ireland.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
From 23 April 2026 an ETA also serves Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, and one approval is recognised across all four places. Movement inside the Common Travel Area follows its own arrangements. If you arrive on one of the islands directly from Spain, check that island’s current guidance before you travel.
Can Spanish Citizens Use UK eGates?
Yes, when the current conditions are met. Spanish citizens are among the EU, EEA and Swiss nationals who can use the automatic eGates. The conditions are:
- a biometric passport with the biometric symbol on the cover;
- a valid digital immigration status or a record of a digital exemption;
- a minimum age of 8, with travellers aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult;
- a minimum height of 120 cm.
The eGate criteria in current guidance refer to a passport. This page does not state that a DNI holder can use an eGate. Gate use is never guaranteed, and a traveller who cannot use a gate is directed to a Border Force desk.
Contactless eGates are a separate process
Current UK guidance says the newer contactless eGate process is initially limited to British citizens, and that other eGate-eligible nationalities will be able to use it later. Spanish citizens should keep using the normal eGate process where their requirements are met, and should not assume contactless access.
UK ETA Requirements for Spanish Citizens
In general terms, the application asks for:
- the Spanish passport you will travel with, valid for the trip;
- an email address you check, because the decision is sent there;
- a photograph of the passport details page and a photograph of your face that meets the digital photo rules;
- passport and personal details entered exactly as printed;
- answers to the suitability questions, given truthfully;
- a payment card or mobile wallet for the payment step.
The UK ETA Requirements page explains the preparation in more detail. Service and processing options are set out on UK ETA Fees & Processing Options, and this guide shows no amounts itself.

Apply NowCommon UK ETA Mistakes for Spanish Citizens
- Assuming a DNI replaces the passport for ordinary ETA travel. Use the passport named in the application.
- Assuming a TIE gives ETA eligibility. Spanish residence does not decide it.
- Confusing the UK ETA with Schengen rules. They are separate.
- Confusing the UK ETA with ETIAS. They are different systems, and ETIAS is not currently operating.
- Assuming Spanish school groups have the France or Germany exemption. They do not.
- Forgetting that each child needs an individual ETA where one is required. A parent’s approval does not cover a child.
- Renewing the passport and travelling on the old ETA. A new passport generally needs a new ETA.
- Assuming the ETA only applies to flights. It applies to eligible travel however you arrive.
- Confusing the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
- Assuming the ETA allows employment. It does not.
- Assuming an ETA guarantees entry. The border officer decides.
Before You Travel from Spain to the UK
- Confirm that the ETA is required for your trip, or that an exemption applies to you.
- Check that you will travel on the passport named in the application.
- If you rely on any status-based position, check the documents that status requires, and do not rely on a DNI unless current guidance confirms it for your case.
- Do not treat a TIE or residence card as an ETA.
- Check each child individually, and do not assume a school group is exempt.
- Check whether your passport has been renewed or replaced since you applied.
- Make sure the name on your booking matches your passport.
- Check that the purpose of the trip fits the Visitor rules.
- Check the transport arrangements, including any connection through a UK airport.
- Check the entry requirements for any other country on your route separately.
UK ETA FAQs for Spanish Citizens
Do Spanish citizens need a UK ETA?
Generally yes. Spain is item 80 on the ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025. A Spanish citizen travelling on a Spanish passport needs an ETA for an eligible short visit, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission.
Can Spanish citizens enter the UK with a DNI?
Not as ordinary ETA travellers. An ETA is linked to a passport, and the traveller should use the passport named in the application. A limited status-based position exists for some people with UK status, but a DNI alone is not a general travel document for ETA travel.
Does a Spanish TIE qualify someone for a UK ETA?
No. A TIE or residence card establishes residence in Spain, but it does not by itself decide UK ETA eligibility. The passport used for travel and any UK immigration status decide the question.
Do Spanish residents with another passport follow Spanish rules?
No. A person living in Spain on a passport from another country is assessed under the UK rules for that passport. Spanish residence does not change the answer, and this guide gives no Spanish immigration advice.
Do Spanish citizens with settled status need an ETA?
No. People with valid permission to live, work or study in the UK, including settled or pre-settled status, do not need an ETA. Their travel-document rules differ, so check what your status requires.
Is the UK ETA part of Schengen?
No. The United Kingdom is outside the Schengen Area. Spain’s Schengen membership does not exempt Spanish citizens from UK ETA rules, and a UK ETA does not authorise entry into Spain or any other Schengen country.
Is the UK ETA the same as ETIAS?
No. The UK ETA is the UK’s own travel-authorisation system. ETIAS is a separate European system, and it is not currently in operation. Neither replaces the other.
Do Spanish schoolchildren need a UK ETA?
Generally yes, unless they qualify for another exemption individually, such as British or Irish citizenship or valid UK immigration permission. Spain has no school-party exemption equivalent to the rules for France and Germany, so a Spanish school group should not assume that exemption applies.
Does Spain have the same school-trip exemption as France or Germany?
No, not on the current rules. The school-party exemptions in the ETA appendix refer to France and Germany, and nothing in them refers to Spain. Spanish pupils need to check their own position.
Do Spanish babies and children need an ETA?
Yes, where an ETA is required. Each traveller needs their own ETA, and a parent’s ETA does not cover a child or a baby.
Do Canary Islands residents follow different ETA rules?
No. The departure region does not change ETA eligibility. A Spanish citizen travelling from the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands or mainland Spain follows the same UK ETA rules.
How long is a UK ETA valid for Spanish citizens?
Up to two years from the date it is granted, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever is sooner. While valid, it can support more than one journey.
Do I need a new ETA after renewing my Spanish passport?
Generally yes. The ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, so a renewed or replacement passport generally needs a new ETA before you travel.
Can Spanish citizens make multiple UK trips on one ETA?
Yes, while the ETA is valid and you travel on the same passport. Each visit is judged under the Visitor rules, and frequent or successive visits cannot be used to live in the UK.
Do Spanish citizens need an ETA for airport transit?
It depends on whether the connection takes you through UK border control. A qualifying airside transit that does not cross border control is exempt. A landside connection may need an ETA where the rules apply to your passport.
Can Spanish citizens use UK eGates?
Yes, when the current conditions are met, including a biometric passport, a valid digital immigration status or digital exemption record, age 8 or over, a minimum height of 120 cm, and an adult for children aged 8 to 17. Use is never guaranteed.
Does a UK ETA guarantee entry?
No. An ETA is permission to travel. A Border Force officer decides on admission when you arrive, and the Visitor rules still apply.
