🇵🇱UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Polish Citizens
A Polish passport holder on a short, eligible trip to Britain usually needs an ETA, whatever the mode of travel. The exemptions are personal and narrow. For the trip itself, the passport linked to the approval is the document to carry.

Do Polish Citizens Need a UK ETA?
The short answer
Usually, yes. Poland is item 74 on the ETA National List, under paragraph 1.1(d), for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025. A Polish citizen travelling on a Polish passport for an eligible short stay needs an ETA before departure, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission. Whether a particular trip is covered depends on the traveller, so check the exemptions below.
The ETA is a permission obtained before travel. It is not a visa and does not replace your passport. Apply online or through the UK ETA app, keep the approval email, and travel on the passport you named.
Can You Travel to the UK with a Dowód Osobisty?
Ordinary ETA travel needs a passport. The approval is tied to the passport named in the application, and a dowód osobisty does not replace it for that purpose.
The dowód osobisty is the Polish national identity card. It is a valid document inside Poland and across the EU, but it is a different thing from the travel document an ETA is linked to.
Who may still travel on a national identity card
Current UK guidance allows an EU, EEA or Swiss national to enter the UK on a valid national identity card in specified protected categories:
- settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme;
- pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme;
- a valid EU Settlement Scheme family permit;
- a Frontier Worker permit;
- S2 Healthcare Visitor status;
- a pending EU Settlement Scheme application, under the conditions the guidance sets out.
Border Force guidance also depends on the card’s chip. ICAO-compliant biometric identity cards remain accepted for this group, and non-ICAO-compliant cards can currently still be used by the same group unless the UK announces a change.
- An ordinary Polish visitor without a protected category should travel on a passport and, where an ETA applies, carry the approval tied to it.
- A qualifying status holder may travel on a valid Polish identity card where the rules above allow it. Where their status already removes the ETA requirement, no ETA is needed.
Identity-card categories can change, so check current UK guidance close to your travel date. This guide does not assess individual status.
What If I Have Settled or Pre-Settled Status?
Valid qualifying UK status, settled or pre-settled, means you do not need an ETA. That is one of the recognised exemptions, and it covers many Polish residents who have lived in Britain for some years.
A status holder may travel on a valid Polish identity card where they fall within a protected category, or on a passport. Make sure the travel document you use matches the one held on your UK immigration account. If you have a new passport, update the account so the link is correct before you travel. This section is not a guide to applying under the scheme.
Does a Karta Pobytu or Polish Residence Permit Decide UK ETA Eligibility?
No, not by itself. A karta pobytu shows residence in Poland. It is not a UK travel document and does not create an exemption.
For a non-Polish citizen living in Poland, the UK question depends on the passport they travel on, any UK immigration status, and whether an exemption applies. The Polish residence document does not change those answers.
Several kinds of Polish residence document exist, including temporary residence, permanent residence, and work, study or family residence. None of them replaces a passport for UK travel. Questions about Polish residence and immigration are outside the scope of this guide.
What If I Live in Poland but Hold Another Passport?
Place of residence and passport nationality are different things for the UK ETA. Someone living in Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk or anywhere else in Poland on a foreign passport is assessed under the rules for that passport.
Check the nationality on the document you will travel with. This guide does not decide eligibility for individual nationalities, and it does not cover residence rules in Poland.
Is the UK ETA Part of Schengen?
No. Poland is a Schengen state and the UK is not. Polish citizenship and Schengen movement do not create an ETA exemption.
- Schengen travel rights do not satisfy the UK requirement.
- A UK ETA does not give permission to enter Poland or any other Schengen country.
- Every country on your route applies its own entry rules, so check each one separately.
UK ETA and ETIAS
- The UK ETA operates now for eligible travel to the UK.
- ETIAS belongs to a separate European project. Its doors are closed for now: nobody can file an application at present.
- Neither can stand in for the other. Holding one tells you nothing about the other.
This guide gives no ETIAS fee and no start date. Check European information before any trip that involves the EU, and be wary of anyone offering to file an ETIAS application for you while the scheme is closed.
Do Polish Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
Polish school groups should not assume an exemption. The school-party provisions in the current ETA rules name France and Germany. Poland has no equivalent.
A Polish pupil who otherwise needs an ETA generally needs their own approval. An exemption can apply to an individual pupil, for example through British or Irish citizenship or valid UK immigration permission, but taking part in a school trip is not one of them.
- The France and Germany arrangements do not extend to a Polish group, and their forms or processes do not apply.
- Get a written note from the school or organiser listing what each pupil and adult must hold.
- Every pupil and every supervising adult should review their own paperwork well ahead of departure.
This does not mean that no Polish child can be exempt. An exemption belongs to the individual child, and it does not come with the group.
Do Polish Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?
Where an ETA is required, every traveller needs one, including babies. A parent’s approval does not extend to a child, and a child’s approval is linked to the child’s own passport.
For practical steps on family applications, read our guide to children, babies and families.
Polish Citizens Who Are Also British
British citizens do not need an ETA, and a dual Polish and British citizen cannot apply for one. Enter the UK as a British citizen with the documents current guidance accepts.
A valid British passport is the most direct proof of British status. A valid passport from another country that carries a certificate of entitlement confirming the right of abode in the UK can also be used.
This section covers only the UK position. It does not give Polish nationality advice or determine who is British. Do not apply for an ETA on a Polish passport to cover missing British documents.
Polish Citizens Who Are Also Irish
Irish citizens do not need an ETA and cannot obtain one. If you hold an Irish passport, travel on it, since it is the clearest way to show Irish status for UK travel.
This is a UK-only explanation and does not determine nationality.
Flying from Poland to the UK with an ETA
- Use the passport linked to your ETA, and check that the booking details match it.
- A carrier may verify the travel authorisation before you board, so keep the approval email to hand.
- The ETA is digital. No printed approval is required by this guide.
- An ETA does not replace the passport, and it does not guarantee admission.
Several Polish cities have flights to the UK, including Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Katowice and Poznań. The ETA position is the same from each of them. No schedules or airline links appear in this guide.
Do You Need a UK ETA When Driving from Poland to Britain?
A drive from Poland usually runs through Germany, Belgium or France before a Channel crossing, though the exact route is up to you. Driving does not create an exemption from the ETA.
- Each person in the vehicle is assessed on their own passport and status.
- Children travelling in the car are assessed individually, and need their own approval where one is required.
- Look at the crossing timetable and the entry rules of each country you pass through before leaving home.
Do Polish Citizens Need a UK ETA When Travelling by Coach or Bus?
Yes, where the ETA applies. A long-distance coach or bus journey into the UK is still entry into the UK.
The requirement follows the traveller and the entry conditions. It does not depend on whether you arrive by air. Coach passengers need the same approval as anyone else, and it has to match the passport they travel on.
This guide names no coach operators, gives no fares and no timetables, and carries no operator links. Check the operator and the crossing arrangements when you book.
Travelling from Poland to the UK by Train
There is no regular direct passenger train between Poland and London. Journeys usually connect through German and Belgian cities before the Eurostar leg, and some routes change in other countries as well. The journey takes many hours and several changes.
The ETA question does not change with the route. Whichever stations you use, your passport and approval must match, and the requirement applies at the UK border. Confirm connections and timings with the operators when you book.
Do Polish Citizens Need an ETA When Arriving by Sea?
Where the ETA applies, arriving by sea does not remove the requirement. A crossing into the UK counts as travel into the UK.
This guide does not state that a direct sea route from Poland operates, and it names no ferry operators or sailing times. Confirm your route when you book.
Is the UK ETA Only for Flights?
No. The ETA attaches to the traveller and the trip, not to the means of transport.
Flights, coaches, international rail connections, road travel through a Channel crossing and sea arrivals all count as travel to the UK. None of them is an exemption in itself.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Polish Citizens?
An ETA lasts up to two years, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever comes first. Within that period it can cover several journeys, and each arrival is judged under the Visitor rules.
Validity is not the same as continuous residence in the UK. For more on repeat trips and passport changes, read our guide to ETA validity and new passports.
What If I Renew or Replace My Polish Passport?
The ETA is tied to the passport in the application. A new passport is a separate document, so where an ETA applies you will generally need a new one.
- Renewal. A fresh passport brings a fresh number, which means a fresh application.
- Expiry. The approval ends when the passport does, even if two years have not passed.
- Lost or stolen. A replacement starts with its own application; the earlier approval stays behind.
- Damaged. Where an ETA applies, a replacement document usually calls for a new one.
- Changed details. If the printed details differ from the ones on your approval, reapply.
How Long Can Polish Citizens Stay in the UK?
Eligible visitors can generally seek entry for up to six months where the Visitor rules are met. Validity of the ETA is not the same as permission to stay for two years, and the ETA does not itself grant six months. The officer on arrival decides how long each visit may last.
Can Polish Citizens Make Frequent UK Trips on One ETA?
Yes, while the approval is valid and you travel on the same passport. Frequent visits for family, business, holidays or short repeat trips can all use this.
An ETA does not permit living in the UK through repeated or back-to-back visits. There is no 90-day or 180-day rule for this guide to describe, and it does not invent one. Be ready to explain the pattern of your trips.
Business Travel from Poland to the UK
Polish firms in manufacturing, logistics, construction, IT and professional services send staff to Britain frequently. Much of that travel is short and can fall within the Visitor business rules.
- meetings, negotiations and discussions with UK partners, clients or suppliers;
- conferences, seminars and trade events;
- qualifying site visits and inspections;
- other permitted business activity within the Visitor rules.
Business visits do not include ordinary employment with a UK organisation, or serving UK clients as though you were based in Britain. The UK ETA for business visits guide explains where the line falls.
Can Polish Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
Not in ordinary employment. The ETA gives no general right to work.
Visitor business activity, permitted paid engagements and the Creative Worker concession each carry their own conditions, and none of them is a general right to take a job. Longer-term work needs a different route, which the UK Visa Guide covers.
The narrow exceptions are set out in our permitted paid engagements guide and in the Creative Worker concession guide.
Can Polish Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
Short study can fit within the Visitor framework, such as a brief intensive language course, a summer programme or a short academic placement. Our UK ETA for short-term study guide sets out what is included.
Longer or different study may need another immigration route. If your plan goes beyond a short course, start with the UK Visa Guide.
Visiting the UK from Poland for Tourism or Family
Short holidays, city breaks and visits to relatives or friends are common reasons Polish travellers go to Britain. Each falls within the eligible short Visitor framework, subject to the rules for that particular visit.
- Holidays and short breaks: see UK ETA for tourism.
- Family and friends: see UK ETA for visiting family and friends.
Do Polish Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
The answer depends on whether your connection takes you through UK border control. An airside transit, where you do not pass that control before the onward flight, may be exempt. A landside connection, where you do pass control, may need an ETA where the rules apply to your passport.
Our UK ETA transit and layovers guide covers the airside and landside difference in more detail. Confirm the routing with your airline before you book.
Poland, Britain and Ireland
The Republic of Ireland is outside the UK and sets its own entry rules. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so a visit to Belfast or elsewhere in Northern Ireland is UK travel.
Passing through Ireland does not remove the UK ETA requirement. The exemption for residents covers people who live in Ireland and travel into the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. A Polish visitor who only spends time in Ireland beforehand does not fall within it.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
The ETA scheme has extended to the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man since 23 April 2026. One approval covers travel to those islands and to the UK.
Travel within the Common Travel Area follows its own rules. For a journey to one of the islands, check the guidance for that island close to departure.
Can Polish Citizens Use UK eGates?
Yes, when the current conditions are met. Polish citizens belong to the EU group that can use the automatic eGates. The conditions are:
- a biometric passport carrying the biometric symbol;
- age 8 or over, with travellers aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult;
- a height of at least 120 cm;
- a valid digital immigration status or a record of digital exemption, where that applies to you.
Travellers who hold only an identity card are not eligible for the gates under the passport-based criteria. Gate use is never guaranteed, and anyone the gate turns away is sent to a staffed desk.
Contactless eGates are a separate process
Current UK guidance limits the contactless eGate process, at first, to British citizens. Polish travellers should use the standard eGate route where they qualify, and should not assume contactless access.
UK ETA Requirements for Polish Citizens
In broad terms, the application asks for:
- the Polish passport you will travel on, valid for the trip;
- an email address you check, because the decision is sent there;
- a photo of the passport details page and a face photograph that meets the digital photo rules;
- passport and personal details entered exactly as they appear;
- truthful answers to the suitability questions;
- a payment card or mobile wallet for the payment step.
The UK ETA Requirements page explains preparation in more depth. Service and processing choices are listed on UK ETA Fees & Processing Options, and this guide does not show any amounts.
How to Apply for a UK ETA from Poland
Take these steps in order. Checking each one before you move on catches most errors before they reach the decision stage.
Decide whether an ETA applies
Confirm that you hold a Polish passport and that no exemption, status position or dual-citizenship point covers you.
Set aside the passport you will travel on
Keep it nearby, and note its expiry date.
Enter your details exactly
Type names, date of birth and passport number as they are printed.
Upload the passport and photo
Supply a sharp scan of the photo page and a selfie that satisfies the digital photo criteria.
Check the number and expiry
Review every field before you submit. Errors found afterwards usually mean starting again.
Choose your UKETA.sg service level
Pick the option that suits your travel dates. It covers how we handle the application, not the UK decision.
Submit and pay
Save the confirmation and reference number.
Keep an eye on your inbox
Check spam too. Do not travel until the approval email has arrived.
Travel on the linked passport
Show the same passport at check-in and at UK border control.

Apply NowCommon UK ETA Mistakes for Polish Citizens
- Expecting a dowód osobisty to replace the passport for ordinary ETA travel. Carry the passport the approval is tied to.
- Reading a karta pobytu as UK travel permission. It is not one.
- Mixing up Polish residence with passport nationality. The UK rules follow the passport.
- Mixing up the UK ETA with Schengen. They are separate.
- Treating ETIAS and the UK ETA as one system. They are separate, and ETIAS is inactive at present.
- Assuming a Polish school group inherits the France or Germany exemption. It does not.
- Assuming a coach journey is exempt. Travel mode creates no exemption.
- Believing the ETA only matters for flights. It applies however you arrive.
- Travelling on a renewed passport with an approval tied to the old one. A new passport usually needs a new ETA.
- Assuming a parent’s approval covers the children. Each child needs an individual approval, unless an exemption applies.
- Assuming the ETA permits paid employment. It does not.
- Assuming an ETA guarantees entry. The border officer makes that decision.
- Mistaking Ireland for Northern Ireland. The second is inside the UK; the first is not.
Before You Travel from Poland to the UK
- Work out whether an ETA is needed for you, or whether an exemption or status position applies.
- Make sure the passport in your bag is the one the approval names.
- If you rely on a protected category, confirm that your identity card falls within it and carry the record that category requires.
- Keep in mind that a karta pobytu is not a UK travel permission.
- If a school group is travelling, confirm that no exemption applies without an individual basis.
- Check each child individually.
- Confirm that you did not get a new passport after submitting your application.
- Check that booking names match the passport exactly, whether you travel by air, coach or rail.
- Confirm the route and operator for each stage of the journey.
- Confirm that the purpose of the trip fits the Visitor rules.
- Check the entry requirements of any other country on your route.
UK ETA FAQs for Polish Citizens
Do Polish citizens need a UK ETA?
Usually yes. Poland is item 74 on the ETA National List, under paragraph 1.1(d), for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025. A Polish passport holder on an eligible short visit needs an ETA unless an exemption covers them or they already hold valid UK immigration permission.
When did the UK ETA become required for Polish citizens?
For travel on or after 2 April 2025. Applications opened on 5 March 2025, so the process has been running since then.
Can Polish citizens enter the UK with a dowód osobisty?
Not as an ordinary visitor. The ETA is tied to a passport, so travel on the passport named in the application. Holders of qualifying status in a protected category may use a valid Polish identity card under current UK rules, so check your category before you travel.
Do ordinary Polish visitors need a passport?
Yes. Carry the passport named in your application for the whole trip.
Do Polish citizens with settled status need an ETA?
No. Valid qualifying UK status, such as settled or pre-settled status, takes you outside the ETA requirement. Your status still has its own document rules, so check them before you travel.
Does a karta pobytu give UK ETA eligibility?
No. A Polish residence card shows that you live in Poland. It does not decide UK ETA eligibility, which depends on your passport nationality, your UK immigration status and any exemption that applies.
What if I live in Poland but use another passport?
Living in Poland does not change the rules for the passport you travel on. Check the nationality on that passport, because the UK requirement is assessed against it.
Is the UK ETA part of Schengen?
No. Poland is in the Schengen Area and the UK is not. Schengen travel rights do not replace the UK requirement, and a UK ETA does not let you enter Poland or any other Schengen state.
Is the UK ETA the same as ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is a separate European scheme. It is not currently operating, and an approval under one scheme cannot be used under the other.
Do Polish schoolchildren need a UK ETA?
Usually yes. The school-party exemptions in the current rules name France and Germany. Poland has no equivalent, so a Polish school group should not assume an exemption. Each pupil needs their own ETA unless another exemption applies to them individually.
Do Polish babies and children need their own ETA?
Yes, in any case where the ETA is needed. Each child has a passport of their own, and the approval follows that document rather than a parent’s.
Do Polish citizens need an ETA for a coach trip to the UK?
Usually yes. A coach or bus journey is travel into the UK, so the requirement applies in the same way as on a flight. Coach travel does not create an exemption.
How long is a UK ETA valid for Polish citizens?
Up to two years, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever comes first. Within that period it can cover more than one journey.
Do I need a new ETA after renewing my Polish passport?
Usually yes. The ETA is tied to the passport you applied with, so a renewed or replacement passport normally needs a new application before you travel.
Can Polish citizens use UK eGates?
Yes, when the current conditions are met. Polish citizens belong to the EU group that can use eGates. The conditions are a biometric passport, age 8 or over, accompaniment by an adult for those aged 8 to 17, a height of at least 120 cm, and a valid digital immigration status or exemption record where it applies. Gate use is never guaranteed.
Can Polish citizens use the contactless eGates?
Not at present. Current UK guidance limits the contactless eGate process, at first, to British citizens. Use the standard eGate route if you meet its conditions.
Does an ETA guarantee UK entry?
No. An ETA is permission to travel. The Border Force officer makes the admission decision on arrival, under the Visitor rules.
