🇲🇽UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Mexican Citizens
In Mexico the INE card opens most doors and the CURP follows you through every form, but a UK ETA is tied to your Mexican passport. This guide explains who needs one, how two surnames should be entered, and why Mexican travellers do not get the ordinary UK eGates on nationality alone.

Do Mexican Citizens Need a UK ETA?
Briefly
Usually, yes. Mexico appears at item 29 of the ETA National List, which applies to trips made from 8 January 2025 onwards. If you are Mexican, carry a Mexican passport and are going to Britain for a brief, eligible stay, the approval must exist before you set off, except where an exemption fits or UK permission is already in your hands.
Saying that every Mexican citizen always needs an ETA would overstate things. Holders of a UK visa, people with qualifying settled status and British or Irish citizens all fall outside it, and so does a traveller who will use another country’s passport.
The ETA is a digital permission to travel, tied to a single passport. It is not a visa, it leaves no stamp, and it does not decide whether you are admitted. Travellers from Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Cancún, Tijuana, Mérida and every other part of Mexico are treated alike.
Which Mexican Document Is Linked to a UK ETA?
The Mexican passport. It is the document issued by Mexico’s foreign ministry for travelling abroad, and it establishes both nationality and identity. When you apply, the ETA records the passport you supply, and from then on approval and booklet belong together.
None of the other Mexican documents can stand in for it. An INE card, a CURP, a driving licence or a residence card is not what the ETA system looks for, and none can be substituted when you board or reach UK border control.
Can I Use My INE Card Instead of a Passport for UK Travel?
The Credencial para Votar is issued through Mexico’s electoral identity system, and in practice it is the identity card people use all over the country, from banks to government offices. It is also accepted as identification in Mexican administrative procedures, including applying for a passport.
That usefulness is domestic. It does not make the card the international passport an ordinary UK ETA journey requires, and it is not a document with which to enter the UK. The card is far from worthless. It simply is not the thing the ETA system relies on.
Does My CURP Affect UK ETA Eligibility?
The Clave Única de Registro de Población, or CURP, is an individual population-registration identifier. Most Mexicans have one, and it turns up on school, health, tax and identity paperwork.
Two points deserve attention. First, the CURP is not reserved for Mexican citizens, because qualifying foreign residents can have one as well. A CURP on its own therefore does not prove Mexican nationality. Second, it is not a passport, not a travel document, not an ETA and not UK immigration status. UK ETA eligibility follows nationality, the passport used and any exemption or status. We give no civil-registry or tax advice.
Is the Mexican Passport Biometric or Electronic?
Mexico began its transition to the electronic passport in October 2021. The booklet contains a chip that stores the holder’s information, and the design follows international standards for chipped passports, with added security features.
A chip does not take the place of an ETA. The ETA is a separate travel authorisation, and the passport is the document it is linked to. It also does not give you the ordinary UK eGates. Mexico is not on the standard nationality list for those, so being biometric and being eGate-eligible are two different questions, as the eGate section below explains.
Why the INE Card, the CURP and the Passport Get Mixed Up
In everyday Mexican life three identifiers do different jobs, and people reasonably treat them as a set. The INE card proves who you are when you vote, open an account or deal with an office. The CURP is the registration code quoted on forms. The passport is the document for crossing borders and for showing nationality abroad.
The ETA system uses only the third. It asks which passport you hold, because the approval is stored against that passport’s number and expiry date. Neither the voter credential nor the registration code is ever entered in that role. A quick check helps: if the document is not the booklet you will hand over at the airport, it is not the document the ETA belongs to.
- INE: identity and voting credential, valuable inside Mexico, not the ETA-linked document.
- CURP: a registration identifier that can also be held by qualifying foreign residents, so it does not prove citizenship by itself.
- Passport: the international travel document, and the only one of the three the ETA is linked to.
What If I Live in Mexico but I Am Not a Mexican Citizen?
Living in Mexico, holding Mexican immigration documentation or having a CURP does not by itself bring a person under the Mexican-citizen ETA rule. A resident travelling on another country’s passport follows the UK position for that passport.
What counts is the actual passport nationality, the travel document used, any UK immigration status and any exemption. No Mexican immigration advice is given here, and a foreign resident should check their own position before booking.
What If a Mexican Citizen Already Has UK Immigration Permission?
Mexico is outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, so the identity-card rules written for those nationals are not relevant to Mexicans. This is a separate case.
- Where a UK visa or eVisa already covers your journey, nothing more is needed in the way of an ETA if the rules exempt permission holders.
- Settled and pre-settled status operate in the same manner for someone arriving as a status holder.
- Update your UKVI account whenever your passport changes.
- Holding UK status never makes an INE card a document for the UK border.
Where you are unsure whether your own permission stretches to a given trip, read the paperwork you were issued. Our UK visa guide gives the wider picture.
What If I Am Mexican and British?
A British citizen has no need of an ETA. Someone with both Mexican and British nationality therefore arrives as a British citizen, carrying the British document that proves it. Mexican nationality law lies outside what this page covers.
What If I Am Mexican and Irish?
The same goes for Irish nationals, who need no ETA and can simply show an Irish passport. We offer no view on Mexican nationality law.
How Should I Enter My Mexican Name on a UK ETA Application?
A Mexican name often has two surnames, more than one given name, accents and the letter ñ. That is perfectly normal, but it is easy to go wrong when a form has only a few boxes. The passport is the authority, so follow the spelling and the order it shows, and follow the application’s own instructions.
- Do not invent an English spelling.
- Do not drop a surname to make the name shorter.
- Do not change accents or characters on your own initiative.
- Where the application asks for machine-readable passport details, follow what the passport and the screen tell you.
We do not set out conversion rules, because guessing could produce a mismatch with your passport.
A practical test before you submit: hold the passport next to the screen and read the name aloud from one to the other. If the form shortens a field, look for the instruction that explains how to continue, rather than deleting part of a surname to make it fit. Matching the passport is always safer than tidying the name.
Do Mexican Children and Babies Need Their Own UK ETA?
Where an ETA applies it applies per traveller, babies included. A parent’s approval gives a child no cover, and the child uses their own passport. This page gives no advice on Mexican parental-consent or exit rules. See our guide to children, babies and families.
Do Mexican Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
Mexico has no school exemption of its own. Two provisions deal with school parties, ETA 1.9 (France) and ETA 1.10 (Germany), and each is framed around qualifying schools in the country named. A group put together by a Mexican school cannot lean on either.
The point can cut the other way. A Mexican national genuinely enrolled at a qualifying French or German school may be covered by the relevant rule when every condition is met, and personal exemptions or UK status may help too.
Flying from Mexico to the UK with an ETA
Many people start in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Cancún, Tijuana or Mérida. We promise no direct services and publish no timetables. The ETA rule does not depend on the airport.
- Apply with the Mexican passport you will really take.
- Check that the booking matches the passport.
- An airline may check digital permission before you board.
- There is nothing to print, since the approval lives electronically.
- It sits beside the passport rather than replacing it, and it is no assurance of being admitted.
For timing, see our guide to UK ETA processing time.
What If My UK Journey Connects Through Another Country?
Stopping in a third country on the way has no effect on the UK’s ETA rule, which is settled by who you are and which passport you hold, whatever airport hosts your change of planes.
Rules for passing through or entering the connecting country form a separate subject. We say nothing about whether you need anything for the United States, Canada, Spain, France, the Netherlands or any other place, so consult each leg on its own.
Do Mexican Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
Everything turns on whether your connection takes you through UK border control. Remaining airside for the whole of a qualifying connection needs no ETA. Being routed landside, perhaps because you must recover luggage or move between terminals, can bring the ETA into play where it applies to your passport.
There is no safe one-line answer either way. Find out from your airline how the tickets are issued, and read our transit and layovers guide.
Mexican Citizens, Ireland and the UK
Ireland, meaning the Republic, is a different state from the UK, whereas Northern Ireland belongs to the UK. Routing a journey through Ireland does not wipe out the ETA requirement. One narrow exemption exists for people lawfully resident in the Republic who reach the UK from somewhere else within the Common Travel Area, and because it comes with conditions it is no general shortcut.
Can Mexican Citizens Use UK eGates?
Not on nationality alone. Mexico is not on the ordinary list of nationalities with automatic eGate access, so an electronic Mexican passport plus an ETA does not create that eligibility. This differs from a few other countries covered on this site, so please do not assume the gates are open.
On arrival, follow the signs and the instructions of Border Force staff. A separate Registered Traveller programme exists, and eligible Mexican members may use the ePassport gates where the current conditions are met. A gate is never guaranteed.
Can Mexican Passport Holders Join Registered Traveller?
Mexico is listed as an eligible passport nationality. The programme has its own conditions: you must be 18 or over, hold an eligible Mexican passport, and have either an eligible UK visa or, if you can visit without one, at least four visits to the UK in the last 24 months.
Passing through the UK on the way elsewhere does not count as a visit. We publish no price and do not link to the programme. It is separate from the ETA, so one does not replace the other. For our own service options, see fees and processing options.
Are Contactless eGates Available to Mexican Travellers?
Ordinary eGates and contactless eGates are different. The contactless rollout is phased and for now limited to British citizens, with other eGate-eligible nationalities expected later.
For now Mexican travellers, Registered Traveller members included, should plan without passport-free processing. A valid passport still has to be in your hand, and only an announcement from the UK authorities would alter that.
Business Travel from Mexico to the UK
Mexican professionals holding an ETA can do what the Visitor business rules allow, for instance sit in meetings, attend a conference, negotiate a contract or inspect a site under the qualifying conditions. What the ETA never supplies is a right to be employed in the UK. Our business visits guide has the detail.
Can Mexican Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
On its own an ETA confers no ordinary employment right. Four categories are worth telling apart:
- activity that counts as permitted Visitor business (see business visits)
- Permitted Paid Engagements
- the Creative Worker concession
- an ordinary job, which normally needs a work visa; the UK visa guide explains
Can Mexican Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
A short course may sit within the Visitor rules, and our short-term study guide shows where the boundary runs. Where a Student visa is required, the ETA cannot do its job, so anyone enrolling for a full programme should read the visa guide first.
Visiting the UK from Mexico for Tourism or Family
Most Mexican visitors come to take a holiday, see the sights or spend time with people they know, all of which is ordinary Visitor activity. For the limits, read about tourism and visiting family and friends.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Mexican Citizens?
The clock runs for two years from the day of grant, but stops sooner if the linked passport runs out first. Inside that window you may travel repeatedly, though the ETA is never a licence to settle in Britain. See our guide to ETA validity, multiple trips and new passports.
What If I Renew or Replace My Mexican Passport?
Your approval belongs to the passport named when you applied. Whenever that booklet is exchanged, whether by renewal, expiry, loss, theft, damage or amended details, the approval does not follow it. Where an ETA is required you should expect to need a new one, and neither the INE card nor the CURP can carry an approval across.
How Long Can Mexican Citizens Stay in the UK?
Under eligible Visitor travel you can generally ask to enter for as long as six months, provided the Visitor requirements are met. The ETA does not itself award six months, and an approval that lasts two years is not two years of residence.
Can Mexican Citizens Make Multiple UK Trips on One ETA?
Yes, throughout its validity. Every arrival is judged afresh against the Visitor requirements, and a string of back-to-back stays must not become a way of living in the UK. There is no 90 or 180 day formula to look for, because the UK system does not use one.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man each operate an ETA scheme, and the requirement has been relevant for travel since 23 April 2026. Where the rules allow, the UK and Crown Dependency approvals are accepted by one another. Because the Common Travel Area follows its own arrangements, confirm the position for the island you have in mind close to departure.
Planning a Family Trip from Mexico: Who Needs What
Family journeys are where the ETA question tends to multiply. A household might include two Mexican parents, a teenager on a Mexican passport, a younger child with a recent passport, and a grandparent who already holds a UK visa. Each person has to be assessed on their own.
- Every traveller with a Mexican passport and no exemption needs a separate ETA, babies included.
- A grandparent whose valid UK permission covers the trip does not need an ETA on top of it.
- A relative who is a British or Irish citizen needs none, and is not asked for one.
- Each approval is tied to its own passport, so check each passport’s expiry date before applying.
Making a list with one line per person, naming the passport each will carry, is the simplest way to avoid the common slip of covering only the adults.
How Far Ahead Should Mexican Travellers Apply?
The sensible rule is to apply well before you buy non-refundable tickets or book an itinerary that cannot be changed, and certainly before you head for the airport. Decisions are often quick, but nobody should plan around that. Our processing time guide discusses what affects timing.
Two checks are worth making at the same time. Look at the passport’s expiry date, because the approval can never outlast it. And make sure the name and number on your application are those of the passport you will take, since a later change of passport means starting again.

Apply NowCommon UK ETA Mistakes for Mexican Citizens
- Assuming the INE card replaces the passport. It does not.
- Treating a CURP as proof of citizenship. Qualifying foreign residents can have one too.
- Treating a CURP as a travel document. It is an identifier.
- Mixing up Mexican residence with Mexican nationality. The passport used decides.
- Believing the electronic passport removes the ETA requirement. It does not.
- Expecting a Mexican ePassport to open the ordinary UK eGates. Nationality eligibility is separate.
- Confusing Registered Traveller with the ETA. They are different things.
- Dropping or changing a surname from the passport. Enter both exactly as shown.
- Assuming what a parent holds covers a child. Every traveller needs a separate ETA.
- Believing a school group from Mexico borrows the French or German exemption. Those rules are narrow.
- Applying one rule to every airport transit. Airside and landside are treated differently.
- Boarding on a new passport with an ETA attached to the old one. A fresh approval is usually needed.
- Reading the ETA as a work permit. It does not give ordinary employment.
- Treating approval as a guarantee of entry. The officer at the border decides.
- Muddling Ireland with Northern Ireland. Only Northern Ireland is in the UK.

- Both surnames and all given names match the passport.
- You have looked at each child on their own.
- For a school trip, nobody assumes the French or German rules reach Mexico.
- You have allowed for any renewed or replaced passport.
- You are not relying on eGate access.
- If Registered Traveller matters to you, you have confirmed it separately.
- You have examined every connection or transit stop.
- The names on the booking agree with the passport.
- What you plan to do in the UK fits the Visitor rules.
UK ETA FAQs for Mexican Citizens
Do Mexican citizens need a UK ETA?
In most cases. A Mexican citizen on a Mexican passport making an eligible short UK visit needs an ETA before departure, unless an exemption fits or qualifying UK permission is already held.
When did the ETA start to apply to Mexicans?
Mexico is item 29 on the ETA National List, which covers travel to the UK on or after 8 January 2025.
Do Mexicans need an ETA just to visit London?
The requirement concerns the UK as a whole, so a trip to London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Belfast is covered in the same way, whichever airport you use.
Can I show my INE card instead of a passport?
No. The INE voter credential is an important identity document in Mexico, but it is not the passport an ETA is linked to, and it does not stand in for the passport at a UK border.
Does a CURP prove that I am Mexican?
Not by itself. The CURP is a population-registration identifier, and qualifying foreign residents can have one too.
Can my CURP replace a passport?
No. It is not a travel document, not an ETA and not UK immigration status.
Which Mexican document is linked to my ETA?
The Mexican passport you enter in the application, which you then present when you board and at UK border control.
Are Mexican passports electronic?
Yes. Mexico began moving to electronic passports with a chip in October 2021. A chip does not remove the ETA requirement.
Does a Mexican electronic passport qualify me for UK eGates automatically?
No. Mexico is not on the ordinary list of eGate nationalities, so a chipped passport and an ETA do not create that eligibility. Registered Traveller members may be able to use the gates.
Can Mexican passport holders join Registered Traveller?
Mexico is an eligible nationality. Applicants must be 18 or over, hold an eligible passport, and have an eligible UK visa or, if they can visit without one, at least four visits in the last 24 months. Transit does not count.
Is Registered Traveller the same as an ETA?
No. It is an optional border-facilitation membership, entirely separate from the ETA. Neither replaces the other.
Do Mexican children need their own ETA?
Wherever an ETA is required, yes. It is per person, an approval held by a parent does nothing for a child, and the child travels on their own passport.
Do Mexican school groups have an ETA exemption?
No. Only qualifying schools in France and Germany are named in the school-party rules. A Mexican school is not covered merely because of its location.
Do I need an ETA to change planes at a UK airport?
Not for a qualifying airside connection where you never pass UK border control. Landside transit may need one, where the ETA applies to your passport.
How long is an ETA valid, and can I make several trips?
Up to two years, or until the linked passport expires if sooner, with multiple journeys allowed. Each trip is assessed under the Visitor rules.
Do I need a new ETA after renewing my passport?
Generally yes, where an ETA applies. The approval belongs to the passport named in the application, and neither INE nor CURP can carry it over.
Can I work or study with an ETA?
An ETA gives no ordinary employment right. Some short activities fit the Visitor rules, including short study, but full employment or a full course needs a visa.
Does an ETA guarantee that I will be admitted?
No. It is permission to travel, and the officer at the UK border decides on entry.
