🇲🇾UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Malaysian Citizens
Malaysians carry MyKad every day, children have MyKid, and MyDigital ID lives on a phone, yet a UK ETA belongs to one thing only: the Malaysian passport you apply with. This guide sorts out who needs an ETA, what each Malaysian document does, and how eGates, Registered Traveller and the APEC card fit in.

Do Malaysian Citizens Need a UK ETA?
Briefly
Generally, yes. Malaysia is item 25 on the ETA National List, covering journeys to the UK on or after 8 January 2025. A Malaysian citizen flying in on a Malaysian passport for a short eligible visit needs the ETA before leaving, unless another exemption fits or UK immigration permission is already held.
The wording matters, because it would be wrong to claim that every Malaysian citizen always needs one. A person with a valid UK visa, qualifying settled status, or British or Irish citizenship is in a different position. So is anyone who is not travelling on a Malaysian passport at all.
Think of the ETA as a digital permission to board and travel, attached to a single passport. It is not a visa, it is not a stamp, and it does not decide whether you are admitted. Your date of travel is the one that counts for the 8 January 2025 threshold, so any trip you are planning now falls well inside it.
Can I Use MyKad Instead of a Passport for UK ETA Travel?
No. MyKad is the smart identity card carried by Malaysian citizens from age 12, and it does plenty of useful work at home: proving who you are, opening accounts, dealing with agencies. None of that makes it the document an ETA is built on.
For an ordinary UK journey, the ETA is linked to the Malaysian passport entered in the application. The card is not what the airline checks against the approval, and it is not what you hand to the officer at the UK border. Keep it in your wallet for use in Malaysia, but do not rely on it as a substitute for the passport on a trip to Britain.
That is a narrow, UK-specific point. It is no statement about what a card can or cannot do elsewhere, and it does not say the card is worthless. It simply is not the thing the ETA system looks for.
What Is the New Generation MyKad?
Malaysia began introducing a new generation of MyKad in stages from 17 September 2026, with a fresh design and a larger set of security features. News coverage in the weeks around the launch stressed that people did not have to hurry to the counter.
The reported position is that holders of an existing, undamaged card are not obliged to replace it just because the new one exists. Cards that are damaged, or that belong to an older category the authorities are phasing out, are a separate matter, so anyone unsure should check with the National Registration Department rather than rely on this page.
For UK travel
A better-protected identity card is still an identity card. The New Generation MyKad does not become a passport, and it is not the document a UK ETA is linked to. Whether you hold the old design or the new one makes no difference to the ETA question.
Can a Malaysian Child Travel to the UK with MyKid?
MyKid is the identity card issued to Malaysian citizen children under 12, and a child receives MyKad on reaching that age. The two are different cards for different age groups, and it is easy to blur them in conversation.
MyKid is not an international passport. A child flying to the UK on a Malaysian passport, where an ETA applies, needs an ETA of their own, linked to the child’s passport. A parent’s approval does not stretch to cover the child, and the card does not take the place of the passport.
Families planning a trip can read more in our guide to UK ETA for children, babies and families.
Can MyDigital ID Replace a Passport for UK ETA Travel?
MyDigital ID is a trusted digital identity that lets a person prove who they are when signing in to supported online services. That is useful for paperwork and for transactions, and it works through an app rather than a card.
It is not a physical international passport, and it cannot be the document an ETA attaches to. Having it set up changes nothing about whether you need an ETA, and it does not carry across to the UK border. A phone full of digital credentials still has to be accompanied by the passport you applied with.
Which Malaysian Document Is Linked to a UK ETA?
The Malaysian international passport. It is the travel document issued to citizens for going abroad, and current e-passport versions follow the international standard for chipped passports. When you apply, the ETA records that passport, and at the end of the process the approval and the booklet are bound together.
A point worth keeping apart: whether a passport has a chip is one question, and whether its holder can use UK eGates by nationality is another. A chipped Malaysian passport does not, by itself, open the ordinary gates. The eGate sections below explain the difference.
What If I Live in Malaysia but I Am Not a Malaysian Citizen?
Living in Malaysia does not decide UK ETA eligibility. Someone with permanent residence, MyPR or another type of Malaysian residence status is not, for that reason, a Malaysian citizen, and the Malaysian-citizen guidance on this page cannot simply be applied to them.
What matters is the passport or travel document actually used, the UK immigration status held, and any exemption that fits. A resident travelling on the passport of another country follows the UK rules for that passport. Anyone with an unusual travel document or a certificate of identity should not assume it is covered, and should check their own position before booking.
What If a Malaysian Citizen Already Has UK Immigration Permission?
Malaysia is outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, so the national ID card arrangements written for those nationals do not apply to Malaysians. Treat this as a separate case.
- A person with a valid UK visa or other permission covering the journey does not also need an ETA where the current rules exempt them.
- Qualifying settled or pre-settled status means no ETA is needed for the person travelling as a status holder.
- Non-EEA status holders should travel with their passport or travel document and make sure their UKVI account and eVisa details are current.
- Holding UK status does not turn MyKad into a UK border document.
This page is not a status tutorial. If you are unsure whether your permission covers a particular trip, look at your own documents before relying on anything general. See also our UK visa guide.
What If I Am Malaysian and British?
British citizens do not need an ETA, and an ETA is not the route for entering the UK as a British citizen. If you are British as well as Malaysian, travel as a British citizen and use the British travel document that shows it.
This page does not give nationality-law advice, and it says nothing about how Malaysia treats a second nationality. It only records the UK side: a British citizen is not asked for an ETA.
What If I Am Malaysian and Irish?
Irish citizens do not need an ETA either. A person who holds both Malaysian and Irish citizenship can travel to the UK as an Irish citizen, and a valid Irish passport is the straightforward way to show that.
No view is offered here on Malaysian rules about holding more than one nationality.
Do Sabah or Sarawak Have Different UK ETA Rules?
No. A Malaysian citizen setting out from Sabah or Sarawak faces the same UK rule as one leaving from the peninsula. The UK requirement follows the traveller, the passport nationality and any status or exemption, not the Malaysian state or region where the journey begins.
So a family in Kota Kinabalu, a student in Kuching and a business traveller in Johor Bahru all ask the same question: is the Malaysian passport I will use covered by the ETA requirement for this trip? This section is about the UK rule only, and it is not Malaysian domestic immigration guidance.
Flying from Malaysia to the UK with an ETA
Many Malaysian travellers start in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching. We do not promise any direct service and we do not publish schedules, because routes change. The ETA rule is the same whichever airport you leave from.
- Apply with the passport you will really carry on the journey.
- Make sure the name and passport details on the booking agree with that passport.
- Airlines may check for valid UK permission to travel before they let you board, so do not leave the ETA to the last minute.
- You are not asked to print a certificate. The approval is digital and is linked to the passport.
- An ETA is not a substitute for the passport and is not a promise of entry.
For a sense of timing, see our guide to UK ETA processing time.
What If My UK Journey Connects Through Another Country?
Itineraries from Malaysia often involve a stop elsewhere, perhaps in a Southeast Asian city, a Gulf hub or a European airport. The connection does not alter the UK ETA rule in itself. Whether you need an ETA for the UK depends on you, not on where you changed planes.
Separately, you are responsible for any transit or entry rules of the connecting country, where they apply. We do not give visa determinations for those places. This page keeps its focus on the UK, so check the intermediate country on its own terms before you book.
Does an APEC Business Travel Card Replace a UK ETA?
Malaysia takes part in the APEC Business Travel Card scheme, which helps qualifying business travellers move among participating economies. The UK is not one of them.
- The card does not replace your Malaysian passport.
- It does not itself grant permission to enter the UK.
- It does not remove the need for the applicable ETA, visa or status.
It is also not the same thing as a trade agreement. Keep the card for the economies where it is accepted, and arrange your UK permission in the usual way.
Business Travel from Malaysia to the UK
An eligible Malaysian business traveller can use an ETA for activity that fits the Visitor business rules: attending meetings, conferences or negotiations, carrying out qualifying site visits, and similar permitted business. The ETA is permission to travel for that purpose. It is not general permission to be employed in the UK.
Frequent business travellers sometimes hold the APEC card as well, but as the section above explains, that card has no UK role. Our UK ETA for business visits guide covers what a trip can and cannot include.
Do Malaysian Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
Generally, a school group organised by a Malaysian school should plan on each eligible pupil having an ETA. The rules do contain special school-party provisions, but they are written for qualifying schools and institutions in France (ETA 1.9) and Germany (ETA 1.10). Being a Malaysian school gives no equivalent.
The reverse nuance is worth knowing. A Malaysian national who actually studies at a qualifying school in France or Germany, and travels as part of a school party that meets every condition, may fall within one of those provisions. That depends on the school and the group, not on Malaysian nationality or on the destination.
Do Malaysian Children and Babies Need Their Own UK ETA?
Where an ETA applies, every traveller needs one, and a baby is a traveller. A parent’s approval does not cover a child, and a child’s approval does not depend on the parent’s.
Three separate things are easy to mix up here: the MyKid card, the child’s passport and the ETA. Only the passport is what the ETA is linked to. Our guide to children, babies and families goes through the details.
Do Malaysian Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
It depends on your route inside the airport. If you stay airside for a qualifying connection and never pass UK border control, no ETA is needed for that connection. If your itinerary forces you through border control or landside, for example to switch terminals or to collect checked bags, an ETA may be required where it applies to your passport.
So it is wrong to say every UK connection needs an ETA, and equally wrong to say none do. Ask your airline whether your tickets are issued together and whether you will be airside throughout. See our transit and layovers guide.
Malaysian Citizens, Ireland and the UK
The Republic of Ireland is a different country from the UK, while Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Going through Ireland on the way does not by itself remove an ETA requirement.
There is one narrow exemption worth knowing. A Malaysian citizen who is lawfully resident in the Republic of Ireland, and who is travelling to the UK from elsewhere in the Common Travel Area, may qualify for the specific exemption in the current rules. It is a defined provision with conditions, and nobody should treat it as a general route.
Can Malaysian Citizens Use UK eGates?
Not automatically. Malaysia is not one of the nationalities whose holders get ordinary UK eGate access simply because of their passport. An ETA does not change that, and neither does having a biometric passport. This is a real difference from some other country guides, so please do not assume the gates are open to you.
On arrival, follow the signs and the directions of Border Force staff, and use the lane you are sent to. Some Malaysian frequent travellers may have gate access through a separate scheme, described in the next section. Access to any gate is never guaranteed.
Contactless eGates
Contactless eGates are a newer, separate rollout that is initially limited to British citizens. At present they are not an option for Malaysian travellers, whether or not they hold an ETA or Registered Traveller membership. If that changes, it will be announced by the UK authorities.
What Is the UK Registered Traveller Option for Malaysians?
Registered Traveller is a separate service for frequent visitors from selected countries. Malaysia is among the eligible passport nationalities, but membership has its own conditions. Applicants are generally adults and must meet a qualifying visa or previous-UK-visit test under the current rules, so it does not suit everyone.
Accepted members can use faster border channels and, with a chipped passport, the ePassport gates. We do not publish its price or turn this page into an application guide, and the two schemes should never be confused: an ETA is not membership, and membership does not stand in for an ETA or a visa. See our fees and processing options page for how our own service works.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Malaysian Citizens?
Up to two years from the date it is granted, or until the passport used in the application expires, whichever happens sooner. A passport with ten months to run therefore limits the approval to roughly ten months.
During that period it can cover several journeys. It is not permission to live in the UK, and it does not open an unlimited stay. For a closer look, see our ETA validity, multiple trips and new passport guide.
What If I Renew or Replace My Malaysian Passport?
The ETA is tied to the passport named in the application. That covers every case in which the booklet changes: renewal, an expired passport, a lost or stolen one, a damaged one, or a replacement with amended details.
Where an ETA applies, a new passport generally means a new ETA. Neither MyKad nor MyDigital ID can carry an approval across to another passport.
How Long Can Malaysian Citizens Stay in the UK?
A valid ETA lets you seek entry under an eligible route. For Visitor travel, that means up to six months on each visit where the Visitor requirements are met. It is a ceiling, and the officer at the border decides what is granted.
The ETA does not itself hand over six months automatically, and an approval lasting two years is not a two-year stay. The two periods are unrelated.
Can Malaysian Citizens Make Multiple UK Trips on One ETA?
Yes, while the ETA remains valid and you travel on the same passport. Each arrival is assessed afresh under the Visitor rules, and repeated or back-to-back visits must not add up to living in the UK. There is no invented 90 or 180 day formula in the UK system.
This suits relatives who visit regularly, tourists, business travellers on short trips and people taking short study visits.
Can Malaysian Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
An ETA does not itself grant ordinary employment permission. Some activities are possible within the Visitor rules, and it helps to separate them from normal jobs:
- permitted Visitor business activity, covered in our business visits guide
- Permitted Paid Engagements
- the Creative Worker concession
For ordinary employment the usual route is a work visa, as covered in the UK visa guide.
Can Malaysian Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
Short periods of study can fit within the Visitor rules, and our short-term study guide sets out what that looks like. An ETA does not replace a Student visa where one is required, so a Malaysian student heading for a full course should look at the visa guide first.
Visiting the UK from Malaysia for Tourism or Family
Holidays, sightseeing and visits to relatives or friends are the most common reasons Malaysians travel, and they sit within the eligible Visitor activities. Our guides to tourism and visiting family and friends go through the limits.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man each opened their own ETA schemes, with applications from 9 April 2026 and an ETA relevant for travel from 23 April 2026. In the circumstances the rules set out, a valid UK ETA and a Crown Dependency ETA are recognised by one another. Because the Common Travel Area has its own arrangements, check the position for your island shortly before you leave.
UK ETA Requirements for Malaysian Citizens
You will generally need:
- a valid Malaysian passport, the one you will travel on
- an email address you can read
- a clear photograph of your face
- personal and passport details, copied exactly
- answers to the application questions
- a payment method for the payment stage
MyKad is not the passport the application asks for. See the full requirements page, and our fees and processing options page for pricing.

Apply NowCommon UK ETA Mistakes for Malaysian Citizens
- Treating MyKad as the passport for an ordinary UK ETA trip. It is not.
- Mistaking the New Generation MyKad for an international passport. A new design does not change its purpose.
- Expecting MyKid to serve as a child’s travel passport. The child needs a passport.
- Confusing MyDigital ID with a travel document. It is a login identity.
- Assuming a biometric Malaysian passport opens the ordinary UK eGates. Nationality eligibility is separate.
- Mixing up the ETA and Registered Traveller. They are different services.
- Thinking an APEC Business Travel Card removes the ETA requirement. It gives no UK entry permission.
- Letting residence or MyPR decide the nationality rule. The passport used is what counts.
- Expecting Sabah or Sarawak to have its own UK rule. There is none.
- Counting on a parent’s ETA to cover a child. Each traveller needs their own.
- Assuming a Malaysian school party gets the France or Germany exemption. Those provisions are specific.
- Believing every airport connection needs an ETA. A qualifying airside one does not.
- Believing every airport connection is exempt. Landside transit may need one.
- Flying on a new passport with an ETA tied to the old one. Expect to need a new approval.
- Reading the ETA as a licence for ordinary employment. It does not give one.
- Assuming approval guarantees admission. The border officer decides.
- Muddling Ireland with Northern Ireland. Only Northern Ireland is in the UK.
Before You Travel from Malaysia to the UK
- You know whether an ETA, UK status or an exemption applies.
- The Malaysian passport you pack is the one named in the ETA.
- MyKad stays a domestic card and is not mistaken for the passport.
- MyDigital ID is not being relied on as a travel document.
- Each child has their own passport and, where needed, their own ETA.
- Nobody is counting on MyKid as an international passport.
- If it is a school trip, the France and Germany rules have been read properly.
- A renewed or replaced passport has been taken into account.
- You are not assuming that you can use the eGates.
- Registered Traveller, if relevant, has been checked on its own terms.
- The APEC card is not treated as UK entry permission.
- Flights and any connections are arranged.
- Booking and passport details match.
- The purpose of the trip fits the Visitor rules.
UK ETA FAQs for Malaysian Citizens
Do Malaysian citizens need a UK ETA?
Usually, yes. A Malaysian citizen using a Malaysian passport for an eligible short trip to the UK needs an ETA first, unless a specific exemption fits or they already hold qualifying UK immigration permission. Nationality is where the question starts, not where it ends.
Since when has the ETA applied to Malaysians?
Malaysia sits in the group of nationalities whose ETA requirement covers travel to the UK on or after 8 January 2025. It is item 25 in the national list. That date is different from the one used for several European nationalities.
Can I show my MyKad instead of a passport?
No, not for an ordinary UK visit. An ETA application is built on a passport, and the approval is tied to that passport. MyKad is a domestic identity card and does not stand in for the travel document.
Does the New Generation MyKad alter anything for UK travel?
No. A redesigned card with stronger security features is still an identity card. It does not become a passport, and it is not the document a UK ETA attaches to. Existing holders are not told to replace a card simply because the new version exists.
Can my child use MyKid to go to the UK?
MyKid is the identity card for Malaysian citizen children under 12. It is not the international passport an ETA is linked to. Where an ETA applies, the child needs their own, linked to the child’s own passport.
Does MyDigital ID replace a passport?
It does not. MyDigital ID proves who you are when you log in to supported online services. It is not a physical travel document, and an ETA cannot be linked to it.
Does living in Malaysia as a permanent resident make me eligible?
No. Residence, including MyPR, does not decide ETA eligibility. What counts is the passport or travel document you actually use, your UK immigration status and any exemption that applies to you.
Do Malaysians with settled or pre-settled status need an ETA?
Someone who holds qualifying UK status does not need an ETA to travel as that status holder. Malaysia is outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, so travel with your passport or travel document and keep your UKVI account details up to date. MyKad is not a UK border document.
Can Malaysian citizens use UK eGates automatically?
No. Malaysian nationality alone does not currently give ordinary eGate eligibility, and holding an ETA does not change that. Follow the signs and the officers’ directions at the border unless you hold a separate qualifying arrangement.
Does a biometric Malaysian passport qualify me for the gates?
A chipped passport is a necessary ingredient for passport gates, but it is not sufficient. Eligibility depends on a nationality list or on another route such as Registered Traveller, and passport technology is a separate matter.
What is Registered Traveller, and is it the same as an ETA?
Registered Traveller is a paid membership scheme for frequent visitors from selected countries, and Malaysian passport holders are among those who can apply if they meet its conditions. It is separate from the ETA. Membership does not replace the ETA, and the ETA does not make you a member.
Does an APEC Business Travel Card remove the need for an ETA?
No. The UK does not take part in the card scheme, so the card gives no UK entry permission, does not replace your passport, and does not stand in for an ETA, visa or UK status.
Do travellers from Sabah or Sarawak follow different ETA rules?
No. The UK looks at the traveller, the passport nationality and any status or exemption. It does not matter whether a journey starts in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching or anywhere else.
Does a school group from Malaysia get the France or Germany exemption?
No. The two school-party provisions in the rules concern qualifying schools in France and in Germany. A Malaysian school party is not covered because of where the school is. A Malaysian national who actually studies at a qualifying French or German school could be considered under those provisions if every condition is met.
Do I need an ETA to change planes in the UK?
Only if the connection takes you through UK border control. Staying airside for the whole of a qualifying connection does not require one. Going landside, for instance to collect bags, may require one where it applies to your passport.
How long does an ETA last, and can I make several trips?
Up to two years from approval, or until the linked passport expires if that comes first. Several journeys are possible during that window, each judged under the Visitor rules.
Do I need a fresh ETA after getting a new passport?
Generally yes, where an ETA applies to you. The approval belongs to the passport named in the application, and a replacement passport has a different number.
Does an ETA guarantee that I will be admitted?
No. It is permission to travel. A Border Force officer decides on entry when you arrive.
