🇮🇹UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Italian Citizens
An Italian passport holder on a short, eligible trip to Britain usually needs an ETA, whether they fly, take the train, drive or arrive by sea. The exceptions are narrow and personal. For an ordinary traveller, the passport linked to the approval is the document to carry.

Do Italian Citizens Need a UK ETA?
The short answer
Usually, yes. Italy is in group 1.1(d) of the ETA National List, which covers travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025. An Italian citizen travelling on an Italian passport for an eligible short visit needs an ETA before departure, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission. Not every Italian traveller falls into the same position, so the exemptions below matter.
The ETA is a permission you obtain before you travel. It is not a visa, and it does not replace the passport. Apply online or through the UK ETA app, keep the approval email, and travel on the passport you named in the application.
Can You Travel to the UK with a Carta d’Identità or CIE?
For ordinary ETA travel, use your passport. The approval is linked to the passport named in the application, and the Carta d’Identità or CIE does not take its place for that purpose.
The Carta d’Identità and the electronic CIE are valid identity documents in Italy. Travel to the UK under the ETA rules is a separate matter. An ordinary Italian visitor who needs an approval should present the passport that holds it, and should not treat the identity card as a substitute.
The narrower status-based position
Some people who hold qualifying UK status may still travel on a national identity card. Current UK guidance covers qualifying EU, EEA and Swiss nationals in several categories: holders of settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, holders of an EU Settlement Scheme family permit, holders of a frontier worker permit, S2 Healthcare Visitors, and certain people with a valid pending EU Settlement Scheme application. People in these categories generally do not need an ETA at all, and their document rules are set separately.
- An ordinary Italian visitor with no UK status should travel on a passport and, where an ETA applies, carry an approval tied to it.
- A status holder in one of the categories above should check the document their own status requires, and keep the relevant status record.
- An Italian card is not refused in every case, and it is not accepted for every traveller. Check your own category before relying on it.
The card rules for these groups have been revised more than once. Read current UK guidance close to your travel date, and check your UK immigration record if you are unsure. This guide does not assess individual status.
What If I Have Settled or Pre-Settled Status?
A person with valid qualifying UK immigration status does not need an ETA. Settled and pre-settled status both fall within this exemption.
Status holders carry different travel documents from ordinary ETA applicants. Your UK status is linked to your account, and the rules for each document depend on that link. Keep your status details and the document your status calls for available when you travel. This page is not a manual for the scheme, so consult your status record for the detail.
Does an Italian Residence Permit or Permesso di Soggiorno Give You UK ETA Eligibility?
No, not by itself. A permesso di soggiorno, a long-term residence permit, or any other Italian residence card does not decide UK ETA eligibility.
For a person living in Italy on a non-Italian passport, the UK question turns on three things: the passport nationality they travel on, any UK immigration status they hold, and whether an exemption applies. A residence document in Italy does not replace the passport or change those answers.
This includes work, study and family residence permits in Italy. None of them is a UK travel document, and none of them creates an exemption on its own. Questions about Italian residence and immigration fall outside this guide.
Is the UK ETA Part of Schengen?
It is not. The UK is outside the Schengen Area. Italian citizenship and Schengen travel rights do not create a UK ETA exemption.
- Movement across the Schengen Area does not satisfy the UK requirement.
- A UK ETA does not authorise travel into Italy or into any other Schengen state.
- Each country on a route applies its own entry conditions, so check every one you pass through.
UK ETA and ETIAS
- The UK ETA already operates for eligible travel to the UK.
- ETIAS is a separate European scheme. It is not currently operating, and no applications are being accepted.
- The two cannot be swapped. An approval under one does not count under the other.
No ETIAS fee or start date is given here. Check the European information before any trip that involves the EU. Be cautious of any service that offers to file an ETIAS application for you while the scheme is closed.
Do Italian Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
Italian school groups should not assume a school-party exemption. The current school-party provisions name France and Germany. No equivalent provision for Italy appears in the rules.
An Italian pupil who otherwise needs an ETA generally needs their own approval. The exception is an individual exemption that applies to that pupil, such as British or Irish citizenship, or valid UK immigration permission.
- The France and Germany arrangements do not carry over to Italy, and the forms and processes for them do not apply.
- Ask the school or organiser to confirm, in writing, what the trip requires for each pupil and adult.
- Each pupil, and each accompanying adult, should check their own position before departure.
This does not mean that no Italian child can be exempt. An exemption belongs to the individual, and taking part in a school trip does not create one.
Do Italian Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?
Where an ETA is required, each traveller needs their own. That includes babies. A parent’s approval does not cover a child, and a child’s approval is linked to that child’s own passport.
For practical advice on family applications, see our guide to children, babies and families.
Italian Citizens Who Are Also British
British citizens do not need an ETA, and a dual Italian and British citizen cannot obtain one. Enter the UK as a British citizen using the documents current guidance accepts.
A valid British passport is the clearest evidence of British status. A valid passport from another country that carries a certificate of entitlement showing the right of abode in the UK can also be used.
This section covers only the UK side. It offers no Italian nationality-law advice and does not decide who is British. Never apply for an ETA on an Italian passport to make up for missing British documents.
Italian Citizens Who Are Also Irish
Irish citizens do not need an ETA and cannot obtain one. If you hold an Irish passport, travel on it, since it is the simplest way to show Irish status for UK travel.
This is a UK-only point. It does not determine nationality.
What If I Live in Italy but Hold Another Passport?
Living in Italy does not bring you under Italian ETA rules. The rules follow the passport you travel on, so a person resident in Italy on a passport from another country is assessed under that country’s position.
Check the nationality you actually travel on, and read the rest of this guide with that in mind. This guide does not give individual visa decisions for every nationality.
Flying from Italy to the UK with an ETA
- Use the passport linked to your ETA, and make sure the booking details match it exactly.
- Airlines may check the travel authorisation before boarding, so keep the approval email to hand.
- The ETA is digital. No printed approval is required.
- An ETA does not replace the passport, and it does not guarantee entry.
Italy has several airports that serve the UK, including Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples and Bologna. The ETA position is the same from each of them. This guide does not list routes or schedules.
Do the Rules Change If You Leave from Sicily, Sardinia or the Mainland?
They do not. The departure region has no effect on whether an ETA is needed. An eligible Italian citizen follows the same principles whether they set out from the mainland, Sicily or Sardinia.
What changes is the transport. Island journeys usually involve a flight or a ferry before the UK leg, and the ETA question for the UK part remains the same.
Travelling from Italy to Britain by Train
There is no direct international train between Italy and London. Travellers usually change in Paris, Brussels or Switzerland before joining a service into the UK. Some new routes are planned, so check the current position close to your trip.
The ETA requirement depends on your UK travel status, not on the city where the rail journey began. Whichever route you take, the approval and the passport must match, and the requirement applies at the UK border. This guide gives no timetables and no operator links, so confirm the connection with the operator when you book.
Do You Need a UK ETA When Driving from Italy to Britain?
Driving from Italy usually means passing through other European countries, most often France, before taking a Channel crossing. Driving creates no ETA exemption. Each traveller in the vehicle is assessed individually.
- Every occupant needs their own approval where one is required.
- Children in the car are assessed in their own right.
- Check the crossing arrangements and each country’s entry rules before you set off.
Do Italian Citizens Need an ETA When Arriving by Sea?
Where the ETA applies, arriving by sea does not remove the requirement. A sea crossing into the UK is still travel into the UK.
This guide does not state that any particular direct sea route from Italy operates, and it names no ferry operators or sailing times. Confirm your route and operator when you book.
Is the UK ETA Only for Flights?
No. The ETA attaches to the traveller and the trip. It does not depend on the mode of transport.
Air travel, international rail connections, road travel through the Channel crossing and sea arrivals all count as travel to the UK. None of them is an exemption in its own right.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Italian Citizens?
An ETA lasts up to two years from the date it is granted, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever comes first. During that time it can cover several journeys, each judged under the Visitor rules.
Validity is not the same as continuous residence in the UK. For more on multiple trips and passport changes, read our guide to ETA validity and new passports.
What If I Renew or Replace My Italian Passport?
The ETA is linked to the passport used in the application. A new passport is a different document, so where an ETA applies you will generally need a new one.
- Renewal. The new passport has a new number, so apply again on it before you travel.
- Expiry. The approval ends with the passport, even if two years have not passed.
- Lost or stolen. The replacement needs its own approval, and the old one does not carry over.
- Damaged. A replacement usually needs a fresh ETA where one is required.
- Changed details. A passport showing different personal details needs a new application.
How Long Can Italian Citizens Stay in the UK?
Eligible visitors can generally seek entry for up to six months where the Visitor rules are satisfied. The ETA does not itself grant that period. Validity and permitted stay are separate, and the officer on arrival decides how long each visit may last.
Can Italian Citizens Make Frequent UK Trips on One ETA?
Yes, while the approval is valid and you travel on the same passport. Frequent visitors for business, family, friends or repeat holidays can use that flexibility.
The ETA does not allow you to live in the UK through repeated or back-to-back visits. There is no 90-day or 180-day rule to apply, and this guide does not invent one. Be prepared to explain the pattern of your visits.
Business Travel from Italy to the UK
Italian companies in manufacturing, fashion, design, engineering and tourism regularly send staff to Britain for short trips. Many of those trips fall within the Visitor business rules.
- meetings, negotiations and discussions with UK partners, clients or suppliers;
- conferences, seminars, trade fairs and similar events;
- qualifying site visits and inspections;
- other permitted business activity within the Visitor rules.
Visitor business activity does not include ordinary employment with a UK organisation, or serving UK clients as though you were based in Britain. See our UK ETA for business visits guide for the detail.
Can Italian Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
Not in ordinary employment. An ETA gives no general permission to work.
Visitor business activity, permitted paid engagements and the Creative Worker concession each have their own conditions. None of them is a general right to take up a job in the UK. Longer-term work needs a different route, which the UK Visa Guide explains.
The narrow exceptions are covered in our permitted paid engagements guide and our Creative Worker concession guide.
Can Italian Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
Short study can sit within the Visitor framework: a short intensive language course, a summer programme or a brief academic placement, for example. Our UK ETA for short-term study guide sets out what counts.
Longer or different study may need another immigration route, and an ETA will not cover it. If your plan goes beyond a short course, begin with the UK Visa Guide.
Visiting the UK from Italy for Tourism or Family
Italians travel to Britain for city breaks, holidays and visits to relatives and friends. Each of these falls within the short Visitor framework, subject to the rules for that visit.
- Holidays and short breaks: see UK ETA for tourism.
- Family and friends: see UK ETA for visiting family and friends.
Do Italian Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
It depends on whether the connection takes you through UK border control. A qualifying airside transit, where you do not pass control before the onward flight, may be exempt. A landside connection, where you do pass control, may need an ETA where the rules apply to your passport.
Our UK ETA transit and layovers guide explains the airside and landside difference in more detail. Confirm the routing with your airline before you book.
Italy, Britain and Ireland
The Republic of Ireland is separate from the UK and sets its own entry rules. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so travel to Belfast or elsewhere in Northern Ireland is UK travel.
Travelling through Ireland does not remove the UK ETA requirement. The exemption for people who live in Ireland covers residents who travel into the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. An Italian visitor who only passes through Ireland beforehand does not qualify for it.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
The ETA scheme now extends to the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, which has applied since 23 April 2026. An approval covers travel to those islands as well as to the UK.
Movement within the Common Travel Area follows its own arrangements. For a journey to one of the islands, check the guidance for that island close to your departure date.
Can Italian Citizens Use UK eGates?
Italian citizens belong to the EU group that can use the automatic eGates, once the current conditions are met. Those conditions include a biometric passport bearing the biometric symbol, and a valid digital immigration status or a record of digital exemption. Current guidance also sets age and accompaniment rules for children, and a height rule. Check the current UK guidance for the exact age and height figures before you travel, since those figures have changed over time.
The eGate criteria refer to a passport. They do not extend to a national identity card, so a Carta d’Identità does not make a traveller eligible on its own. Gate use is never guaranteed, and anyone the gate turns away is directed to a staffed desk.
Contactless eGates are a separate process
Current UK guidance limits the newer contactless eGate process, at first, to British citizens. Italian travellers should use the standard eGate route where they qualify, and should not assume contactless access.
UK ETA Requirements for Italian Citizens
The application broadly asks for:
- the Italian passport you will travel on, valid for the trip;
- an email address you check regularly, because the decision is sent there;
- a photo of the passport details page and a face photograph meeting the digital photo rules;
- passport and personal details entered exactly as printed;
- truthful answers to the suitability questions;
- a payment card or mobile wallet for the payment step.
The UK ETA Requirements page covers preparation in more depth. Service and processing choices are set out on UK ETA Fees & Processing Options, and this guide does not show any amounts.
How to Apply for a UK ETA from Italy
Work through these steps in order. Each one is designed to catch a problem before it reaches the decision stage.
Decide whether an ETA applies to you
Confirm that you hold an Italian passport and that no exemption, status position or dual-citizenship point covers you.
Choose the passport you will travel on
Pick the document you will carry for the whole journey, and note its expiry date.
Enter your details as printed
Type names, date of birth and passport number exactly as they appear on the document.
Upload the passport and photo
Use a clear image of the details page and a face photograph that meets the rules.
Check the number and expiry date
Look at every field before you submit. Most errors found later mean starting again.
Select your UKETA.sg service option
Pick the option that suits your dates. It describes how we handle your application, not the UK decision.
Submit and pay
Keep the confirmation and the reference number.
Watch for the approval email
Check spam as well. Do not travel until the approval email has arrived.
Travel on the linked passport
Present the same passport at check-in and at UK border control.

Apply NowCommon UK ETA Mistakes for Italian Citizens
- Treating a Carta d’Identità as a stand-in for the passport on ordinary ETA travel. Carry the passport the approval is tied to.
- Reading an Italian residence permit as UK travel permission. It is not one.
- Mixing up the UK ETA with Schengen. They are separate systems.
- Mixing up the UK ETA with ETIAS. Different schemes, and ETIAS is not operating at present.
- Expecting the France or Germany school-trip exemption to cover an Italian group. It does not.
- Applying on one passport and travelling on another. The approval follows the passport named in it.
- Continuing to use an approval after the passport has been replaced. A new passport usually needs a new ETA.
- Assuming a parent’s approval covers the children. Each child needs their own, unless an exemption applies.
- Believing the ETA only matters for flights. It covers eligible travel however you arrive.
- Believing the ETA allows paid work. It does not.
- Believing the approval guarantees entry. The border officer makes the decision on arrival.
- Confusing the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
Before You Travel from Italy to the UK
- Confirm that an ETA applies to you, or that an exemption or status position covers you.
- Check that the approval is tied to the passport you are carrying.
- If you rely on a status-based identity-card position, confirm that your category allows it and carry the record it requires.
- Keep in mind that an Italian residence permit is not a UK travel permission.
- If a school group is travelling, confirm that the group has no exemption unless an individual basis applies.
- Check each child individually.
- Check whether your passport has been renewed or replaced since you applied.
- Check that your booking names match the passport exactly.
- Confirm the route and the operator for each stage of the journey.
- Confirm that the purpose of the trip fits the Visitor rules.
- Check the entry requirements of any other country on your route separately.
UK ETA FAQs for Italian Citizens
Do Italian citizens need a UK ETA?
Usually yes. Italy appears on the ETA National List under paragraph 1.1(d), which applies to travel on or after 2 April 2025. An Italian passport holder on an eligible short visit needs an ETA unless an exemption covers them or they already hold valid UK immigration permission.
Did Italian citizens need an ETA before 2 April 2025?
Not for travel before that date. The requirement applies to journeys on or after 2 April 2025, and applications opened earlier, in March 2025, so the process has been running for some time.
Do Italians need an ETA for London?
Yes, unless an exemption applies. London is part of the UK, so the same rules apply as for any other destination.
Can Italians travel to the UK with a Carta d’Identità ?
Not as an ordinary ETA traveller. The ETA is tied to a passport, and that passport should be the one you named in the application. Some people with qualifying UK status can use an Italian national identity card under separate rules, so check your position before you rely on one.
Can Italians travel with a CIE?
The CIE is the electronic version of the Italian identity card. For ordinary ETA travel it does not replace a passport. A narrow status-based position can allow identity-card travel for some qualifying groups, and that position is explained in the identity-card section of this guide.
Do ordinary Italian visitors need a passport?
Yes. An ordinary visitor under the ETA rules should carry the passport named in the application for the whole trip.
Do Italians with settled status need an ETA?
No. Valid qualifying UK immigration status, such as settled or pre-settled status, removes the ETA requirement. Status holders should check which travel document their status requires before they travel.
Does a permesso di soggiorno give UK ETA eligibility?
No. An Italian residence permit does not decide UK ETA eligibility on its own. Eligibility depends on your passport nationality, any UK immigration status you hold, and whether an exemption applies.
What if I live in Italy but use another passport?
Living in Italy does not change the rules that apply to your travel passport. Check the nationality you travel on, because that is the passport the UK requirement is assessed against.
Is the UK ETA part of Schengen?
No. The UK is outside the Schengen Area. Italian residence and Schengen travel rights do not satisfy the UK requirement, and a UK ETA does not authorise entry into Italy or any other Schengen state.
Is the UK ETA the same as ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is a separate European system, and it is not currently operating. An approval under one scheme cannot be used under the other.
Do Italian schoolchildren need a UK ETA?
Usually yes. The school-party exemptions in the current rules name France and Germany. Italy has no equivalent, so an Italian school group should not assume an exemption, and each pupil needs their own ETA unless another exemption applies to them individually.
Do Italian babies and children need their own ETA?
Yes, wherever an ETA is required. A child cannot travel on a parent’s approval, so each child needs an application linked to their own passport.
Do Italian citizens need an ETA for airport transit in the UK?
It depends on the connection. A qualifying airside transit, where you do not pass UK border control, is exempt. A landside connection, where you do pass control, may need an ETA where the rules apply to your passport.
Can Italian citizens use UK eGates?
Italian citizens are within the EU group that can use eGates, once the current conditions are met. The conditions include a biometric passport, and use is never guaranteed. Anyone the gate turns away is directed to a desk.
Is the UK ETA only required for flights?
No. The requirement applies to eligible travel however you arrive, whether by air, international rail, road or sea.
Does an ETA guarantee UK entry?
No. An ETA is permission to travel. The Border Force officer decides on admission when you arrive, under the Visitor rules.
