🇫🇷UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE

UK ETA for French Citizens

French citizens travelling on a French passport generally need a UK ETA for an eligible short trip to the United Kingdom, whether by air, Eurostar, the Channel Tunnel or ferry, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission. Travelling from France by train or road does not change that answer.

Do French Citizens Need a UK ETA?

The short answer

Generally, yes. France is item 60 on the UK’s ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025, with no France-specific condition attached to that entry. A French citizen travelling on a French passport for an eligible short stay therefore needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission. Not every French traveller is in the same position, so check the exemptions below before you assume either way.

France is a neighbour, which makes the UK feel close. The ETA is a separate step, and it applies whether you cross the Channel by train, car, ferry or plane. Apply online or in the UK ETA app, keep the approval email, and make sure the passport you fly or travel on is the one named in the application.

Is the UK ETA Part of Schengen?

No. The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen Area, and the UK ETA is a UK requirement.

  • A UK ETA concerns eligible travel to the UK.
  • A Schengen travel permission does not replace any UK requirement.
  • A UK ETA does not itself authorise entry to France or any other Schengen country.
  • Each country sets its own entry requirements, so check each destination separately.

UK ETA vs ETIAS

French travellers often hear about ETIAS, the European travel-authorisation framework, alongside the UK ETA. The two are separate systems with different purposes, and neither is a substitute for the other.

  • The UK ETA is the United Kingdom’s travel-authorisation system for eligible travel to the UK.
  • ETIAS is a separate European framework for travel to European countries where it applies.
  • They are not interchangeable. Approval under one does not satisfy the other.

The timing and rules for ETIAS have changed more than once, and sources disagree about its current status. This page does not give a launch date or an enforcement date. Check the European information on ETIAS before any trip that involves the EU, and keep the UK ETA question separate.

Do French Citizens Need a UK ETA for Eurostar?

Generally yes, where the ETA applies to the traveller. Leaving France by train does not remove the UK requirement. The journey still involves entering the UK, and the rules for entering the UK still apply.

  • The ETA applies to the UK part of the journey, whatever the mode of transport.
  • Travel on the passport linked to your ETA, and check that its details match your booking.
  • Border checks form part of the international rail journey, so the answer on the passport is what matters.
  • An ETA is permission to travel. It does not guarantee admission, and the officer you meet decides that.

Station procedures change, so check the current arrangements for your departure and arrival points. Nothing on this page should be read as a station-specific instruction.

Paris to London with a UK ETA

Paris to London is one of the most common routes for French travellers, and the ETA question is the same whether you book a single train ticket or a longer itinerary.

  • Use the passport named in your ETA application for the whole trip.
  • Make sure the name on your rail booking matches the passport exactly, including any accents or spelling.
  • Expect border control as part of the journey, and be ready to show your passport.
  • Keep your ETA approval email to hand. Do not assume that a booking alone proves your eligibility.

The ETA is checked as part of the travel-authorisation process. Your ETA does not replace the passport itself, and it does not require a printed copy. Keep the email available, and carry the passport.

Do You Need a UK ETA When Driving Through the Channel Tunnel?

Travelling by car does not create an ETA exemption. If you are a French citizen who needs an ETA, you generally still need one when you enter the UK through the Channel Tunnel.

  • Each person in the vehicle is checked individually, so every traveller needs their own position confirmed.
  • The driver and passengers should each travel on the passport linked to their own ETA.
  • Children in the car are covered by the child rules, not the driver’s approval.
  • Check the current arrangements with the operator for your crossing, since operator procedures change.

Do French Citizens Need a UK ETA for a Ferry to Britain?

Generally yes. The requirement follows the traveller and the purpose of the journey, not the route. A ferry crossing from northern France to Britain is still travel to the UK, and it does not create an exemption.

This page does not provide ferry schedules or operator information. Confirm the arrangements with the ferry company when you book, and make sure each traveller has the ETA their own passport requires.

Is the UK ETA Only Required When Flying?

No. The ETA applies to eligible travel to the UK, not merely to flights.

A French traveller who arrives by air needs an ETA, and so does one who arrives by Eurostar, through the Channel Tunnel or by ferry. The question is whether the traveller needs an ETA for the UK visit, and the route does not change the answer. Many French families choose the train or car for a short trip, and they are sometimes surprised to learn that the ETA still applies.

Does EU Citizenship Exempt French Travellers from the UK ETA?

No. There is no general exemption for EU citizenship. France is one of the nationalities on the ETA National List, so French passport holders need an ETA for eligible UK travel unless a specific exemption applies.

UK travel-authorisation rules are separate from EU free movement and from Schengen arrangements. Being an EU citizen does not remove the UK requirement, and it does not give a right to enter the UK without the rules that apply to French passport holders.

What If I Live in France but Hold Another Passport?

Living in France does not decide UK ETA eligibility. A residence permit or a status in France does not, by itself, make someone eligible for an ETA or exempt from one. The passport used for travel is the question.

  • A French citizen using a French passport falls under the French entry on the National List.
  • A French resident using a passport from another country is assessed under the rules for that passport.
  • A person with a French residence permit and a non-French passport should check the requirements for that passport, not the French one.

This guide does not give French immigration advice. For residence questions, consult a qualified French adviser.

French Citizens Who Are Also British

British citizens do not need an ETA, and a dual British and French citizen cannot obtain one. Current guidance says a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship cannot get an ETA.

Travel as a British citizen, and show British status with the documents current guidance accepts. A valid British passport is the clearest proof. Where a person holds another valid passport that carries a certificate of entitlement showing the right of abode in the UK, that can also be used.

This section does not decide whether anyone is British. Citizenship depends on the law and on individual circumstances. Do not apply for an ETA on a French passport to get round missing British documents.

French Citizens Who Are Also Irish

Irish citizens do not need an ETA and cannot obtain one. Travel on your Irish passport if you hold one. It is the clearest way to show Irish status for travel to the UK.

This page is about the UK consequences only. It does not give nationality-law advice, and it does not decide whether a person is entitled to Irish citizenship.

Do French Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?

Some do not, but this is not a blanket exemption. The exemption applies to a child travelling on a France-UK school trip under the specified travel information arrangement.

The exemption covers children on that specific arrangement. It does not cover every French child, every school trip, every EU school group, family holidays or private language-study trips. A school group that is not run under the specified arrangement is not exempt by that route.

  • Ask the school or the trip organiser to confirm, in writing, which arrangement applies to the trip.
  • Check whether the travel information the arrangement requires has been prepared for every child.
  • If a child is not covered, that child needs their own ETA before travel, as any other traveller would.
  • Teachers and accompanying adults should check their own position separately.

Do French Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?

Outside a relevant exemption, yes. Each traveller needs their own ETA where one is required, and that includes babies and children. A parent’s ETA does not cover a child, so each child’s passport needs its own approval.

A parent or guardian can apply for a child. In the app when the child is with you; online, with photographs of the child’s passport and face, when they are not. Our guide to children, babies and families explains the practical steps for each child.

What If I Renew or Replace My French Passport?

The ETA is linked to the passport you named in the application. A renewed, replaced or re-issued French passport is a different document, and a new ETA is generally required where one applies.

  • Renewal. A renewed passport has a new number, so apply again on it before you travel.
  • Expiry. The ETA ends with the passport it is linked to, even if two years have not passed.
  • Lost or stolen passport. A replacement needs its own ETA. The old approval does not move to it.
  • Damaged passport. A replacement generally needs a new ETA where an ETA applies.
  • Changed details. A new passport showing changed personal details needs a new application.

Our guide to ETA validity and new passports covers the detail.

How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for French Citizens?

An ETA lasts for up to two years from the date it is granted, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever is sooner. While it is valid you can make more than one journey. It is not a promise of two years of continuous stay in the UK.

How Long Can French Citizens Stay in the UK?

Eligible visitors can generally come to the UK for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term study, where the Visitor rules are satisfied. ETA validity is not the same as permitted stay. The officer at the border decides how long you may stay on each visit, and the ETA does not grant six months in its own right.

Can French Citizens Make Frequent Trips to the UK?

Many French travellers cross the Channel often for work, family or leisure. A valid ETA can support multiple journeys during its validity, and each entry is still judged under the Visitor rules.

The ETA does not allow you to live in the UK through frequent or successive visits. There is no 90-day or 180-day formula to apply here, and this page does not invent one. What matters is the pattern of your visits. Repeated long stays separated by short gaps can raise questions at the border.

Business Travel from France to the UK

French companies in engineering, luxury goods, food and drink, finance, technology and professional services send staff to Britain regularly. Many of those trips are short and can fit the Visitor business rules.

  • meetings with UK partners, customers or suppliers, and negotiations for your French employer;
  • conferences, seminars, trade fairs and investor events;
  • qualifying site visits and inspections;
  • other permitted business activity within the Visitor rules.

A business visit does not allow ordinary employment for a UK organisation or service to UK clients as though you were based in Britain. See our UK ETA for business visits guide for where the line falls.

Can French Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?

Not in ordinary employment. An ETA does not provide ordinary UK work permission.

Visitor business activity, permitted paid engagements and the Creative Worker concession each have their own conditions. None of them is a general right to take up a job in the UK. Longer-term work or a move to Britain needs a different route, which you can review in the UK Visa Guide.

The limited exceptions are explained in our permitted paid engagements guide and our Creative Worker concession guide.

Can French Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?

Short-term study can fit within the Visitor framework, for example a short language course, a summer programme or a brief academic placement. Our UK ETA for short-term study guide explains what counts.

Longer or different study may need another immigration route, and an ETA will not be enough for it. Begin with the UK Visa Guide if your plan goes beyond a short course.

Visiting the UK from France for Tourism or Family

For a city break, a weekend in London, a tour of the countryside or a visit to friends and relatives, the ETA covers eligible short Visitor travel. Tourism and family visits are among the most common reasons French travellers come to the UK.

Do French Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?

It depends on whether the connection takes you through UK border control. A qualifying airside transit, where you do not pass border control before your onward journey, is treated differently from a landside connection that does.

Our UK ETA transit and layovers guide explains the airside and landside distinction in detail. Confirm your connection with the airline before you book.

France, Britain and Ireland

The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK and sets its own entry rules. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, so travel to Belfast or elsewhere in Northern Ireland is UK travel.

Entering the UK through Ireland does not remove the ETA requirement. The exemption for people who live in Ireland covers those who live there and travel into the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. Being a French tourist who visits Ireland first does not qualify. For a child under 16 travelling on that route, proof of residence in Ireland is not needed under the exemption as currently published.

Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man

Since 23 April 2026 the ETA scheme has extended to the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. An ETA can be used for travel to those islands as well as the UK, and approval is recognised across the group.

Travel within the Common Travel Area is treated differently. If you are coming to one of the islands directly from France, check the guidance for that destination close to your departure date.

Can French Citizens Use UK eGates?

Yes, when the current conditions are met. French nationals are in the group of EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic and Liechtenstein nationals who can use the automatic eGates. The conditions are:

  • a biometric passport with the biometric symbol on the cover;
  • a valid digital immigration status or a record of a digital exemption;
  • a minimum age of 8, with travellers aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult;
  • a minimum height of 120 cm.

Those conditions can change, so check the current guidance rather than older figures. Using a gate is never guaranteed, and a traveller who cannot use one is directed to a Border Force desk. Anyone who needs a Border Force stamp under the Creative Worker concession must see an officer.

Contactless eGates are a separate matter

The newer contactless eGate process is separate from the standard gates. Current UK guidance says it is initially limited to British citizens, and that other eGate-eligible nationalities will be able to use it later. French passport holders should keep using the normal eGate process where their requirements are met, and should not assume contactless access.

UK ETA Requirements for French Citizens

In general terms, the application asks for:

  • the French passport you will travel with, which must be valid for the trip;
  • an email address you check, because the decision is sent there;
  • a photograph of the passport details page and a photograph of your face that meets the digital photo rules;
  • identity and passport information entered exactly as printed;
  • answers to the suitability questions, given truthfully;
  • a payment card or mobile wallet for the payment step.

The UK ETA Requirements page explains the preparation in more detail. Service and processing options are set out on UK ETA Fees & Processing Options, and this guide shows no amounts itself.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from France

  1. Confirm eligibility

    Check that you will travel on a French passport and that no exemption or dual-citizenship position applies to you.

  2. Prepare the French passport you will travel with

    Have it to hand and note the expiry date.

  3. Enter personal and passport details accurately

    Copy names, date of birth and passport number exactly as printed.

  4. Provide the passport and photo information

    A clear image of the passport details page and a face photograph that meets the rules.

  5. Review the passport number and expiry date

Common UK ETA Mistakes for French Citizens

  1. Thinking the ETA is only for flights. It applies to eligible travel by rail, car and ferry too.
  2. Assuming Eurostar passengers do not need an ETA. The route does not change the requirement.
  3. Confusing the UK ETA with Schengen or ETIAS. They are separate systems.
  4. Assuming EU citizenship is itself an exemption. It is not.
  5. Applying with one passport and travelling on another. The ETA is tied to the passport named in the application.
  6. Using an ETA after renewing the passport. A new passport generally needs a new ETA.
  7. Assuming one family ETA covers everyone. Each traveller needs an individual approval.
  8. Misunderstanding the school-trip exemption. It applies only to qualifying trips under the specified arrangement.
  9. Assuming an ETA permits employment. It does not.
  10. Assuming an ETA guarantees entry. The border officer decides.
  11. Confusing the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK.

Before You Travel from France to the UK

  • Confirm that the ETA is granted, where one is required, and that its details match your passport.
  • Check that you will travel on the passport named in the application.
  • Make sure the name on your rail, ferry or flight booking matches your passport.
  • Check each child individually, including whether a school-trip exemption applies.
  • Check whether your passport has been renewed or replaced since you applied.
  • Check that the purpose of the trip fits the Visitor rules.
  • Check transport arrangements, including any connection through a UK airport.
  • Check the entry requirements for any other country on your route separately.

UK ETA FAQs for French Citizens

Do French citizens need a UK ETA?

Generally yes. France is item 60 on the ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025. A French citizen travelling on a French passport needs an ETA for an eligible short visit, unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission.

Do French citizens need an ETA for London?

Yes, if London is the destination and no exemption applies. The ETA is for travel to the United Kingdom, and London is part of it.

Do I need a UK ETA for Eurostar?

Generally yes. Travelling to Britain by train does not remove the requirement. The ETA applies to the UK journey, and you should travel on the passport linked to your approval.

Do I need an ETA when driving through the Channel Tunnel?

Generally yes, if you are a French citizen who needs an ETA. Travelling by car does not create an exemption, so each traveller in the vehicle is checked individually.

Is the UK ETA only required when flying?

No. The ETA applies to eligible travel to the UK, whether you arrive by air, rail, road or sea.

Is the UK ETA part of the Schengen Area?

No. The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen Area. A UK ETA covers travel to the UK, and it does not authorise entry to France or any other Schengen country.

Is the UK ETA the same as ETIAS?

No. ETIAS is a separate European travel-authorisation framework, and the UK ETA is the United Kingdom’s own system. They are not interchangeable, and neither replaces the other’s requirements.

Do French residents with another passport qualify because they live in France?

No. Residence in France does not decide UK ETA eligibility. The passport you travel on does, so a resident using another country’s passport follows the rules for that passport.

Do French-British dual citizens need an ETA?

No, and they cannot obtain one. Travel as a British citizen and show British status with the documents current guidance accepts.

Do French-Irish dual citizens need an ETA?

No. Irish citizens do not need an ETA and cannot obtain one. A valid Irish passport is the straightforward way to show that status.

Do French schoolchildren need a UK ETA?

Some do not. A child travelling on the France-UK school trip under the specified travel information arrangement can be exempt. That is not a blanket exemption for all school groups, all French children or all trips.

Do French babies and children need their own ETA?

Yes, unless an exemption applies. Each traveller needs their own ETA where one is required, and a parent’s ETA does not cover a child or a baby.

Do I need a new ETA after renewing my French passport?

Generally yes. The ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, so a renewed or replacement French passport generally needs a new ETA before you travel.

How long is a UK ETA valid for French citizens?

Up to two years from the date it is granted, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever is sooner. While valid, it can support multiple journeys.

Can French citizens make multiple UK trips on one ETA?

Yes, while the ETA is valid and you travel on the same passport. Each arrival is still judged under the Visitor rules, and frequent or successive visits cannot be used to live in the UK.

Can French citizens use UK eGates?

Yes, when the current conditions are met, including a biometric passport, digital immigration status or a digital exemption record, a minimum age of 8 and a minimum height of 120 cm, with children aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult. Use is never guaranteed.

Can French citizens use contactless eGates?

Not at present. Current UK guidance says the contactless eGate process is initially limited to British citizens. Use the normal eGate process where your requirements are met.

Does an ETA guarantee UK entry?

No. An ETA is permission to travel. A Border Force officer decides on admission when you arrive, and the Visitor rules still apply.
