🇨🇦UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Canadian Citizens
Canadian citizens travelling on a Canadian passport generally need a UK ETA before an eligible short trip to the United Kingdom, whether it is a holiday, a family visit, a business trip or a short course, unless an exemption applies or they already hold another valid UK immigration permission. This guide explains who is covered, who is not and how to apply.

Do Canadian Citizens Need a UK ETA?
The short answer
Generally, yes. Canada is listed on the UK’s ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 8 January 2025. A Canadian citizen travelling on a Canadian passport for an eligible short stay therefore needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding, unless an exemption applies or they already hold another valid UK immigration permission. It would be wrong to say that every Canadian always needs one.
For most Canadians the position is easy to apply. You carry a Canadian passport, you are heading to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland for a holiday, a visit to relatives, a conference or a short course, and you hold no UK visa or settled status. In that case you apply for an ETA online or in the UK ETA app, and you wait for your confirmation email before you fly. Airlines check for it at check-in, and a passenger without one can be turned away at the desk.
Many Canadians grew up thinking of the UK as a place you simply fly to with a passport and a return ticket, so the extra step can feel like a surprise. Please also keep this scheme separate from Canada’s own electronic travel authorisation for certain foreign visitors flying to Canada. That is a different system, for different people, and Canadian citizens do not need it to return home.
Quick guide: does your situation need an ETA?
| Your situation | ETA needed? |
|---|---|
| Canadian citizen on a Canadian passport, visiting the UK on holiday | Yes, before you travel |
| Canadian permanent resident travelling on another country’s passport | It depends on the rules for that passport’s nationality. PR status does not decide it |
| Canadian citizen who is also a British citizen | No, and you cannot get one. Travel as a British citizen |
| Canadian citizen who is also an Irish citizen | No, and you cannot get one. Travel on your Irish passport |
| Canadian and US dual national | Yes, on whichever passport you will use, and the ETA is tied to that passport |
| Connection through a UK airport | No if airside throughout; yes if you pass through UK border control |
| Planning to work for a UK employer or study for a degree | An ETA is the wrong document. See the UK Visa guide |
What Is a UK ETA?
An Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital permission to travel to the UK. You supply your details and photographs, the application is decided, and the result arrives by email. Nothing is stamped in your passport and nothing needs to be printed. The ETA is held electronically against the passport you named when you applied.
It is not a visa, and it is not itself permission to enter the UK. It allows you to travel and then to ask for permission to enter as a Visitor. A Border Force officer decides whether to admit you when you arrive, which is why holding an ETA never guarantees admission.
Does Canadian Permanent Residence Make You Eligible for a UK ETA?
No. Canadian permanent resident status is not Canadian citizenship. UK ETA eligibility depends primarily on the nationality of the passport you use to travel, and a PR card is not a passport.
This is a common point of confusion, because permanent residents often build a life in Canada and hold a card that opens many doors. None of that changes the UK’s question, which is which country issued the passport you will board with.
How it works in practice
- A Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport falls under the Canadian entry on the National List and generally needs an ETA for an eligible short trip.
- A Canadian permanent resident with, say, an Indian passport is looked at as an Indian passport holder. The requirements that apply to the Indian passport apply, whatever the person’s status in Canada.
- A permanent resident with a passport from another country should check the rules for that nationality. Depending on the country, that could mean a visa, an ETA or neither.
- A permanent resident who later becomes a Canadian citizen and travels on a Canadian passport is covered by the Canadian entry from then on.
So a PR card cannot create an ETA entitlement, and it cannot take one away. Living in Canada does not make someone Canadian for UK immigration purposes, and nothing on a Canadian immigration document substitutes for a UK ETA or a UK visa.
What If I Live in Canada but I’m Not a Canadian Citizen?
Many international students, skilled workers and families in Canada travel to the UK regularly. The immigration category you hold in Canada does not determine UK ETA eligibility. That applies to each of the following on its own:
- a work permit, including an employer-specific or open permit;
- a study permit;
- temporary resident status, including a visitor record;
- permanent residence;
- residence in a particular province or territory, or a provincial nomination.
What counts is the nationality of the passport you will use on the journey. Someone living in Toronto or Vancouver on a Nigerian, Filipino or Brazilian passport is treated according to the rules for that passport, exactly as they would be if they were living at home. Our eligibility checker on the homepage shows how most passports are treated, and you should confirm the detail in current guidance before you apply. This guide does not give Canadian immigration advice, including advice about whether leaving Canada may affect a permit or an application there. For that, speak to a qualified Canadian adviser.
Canadian Citizens Who Are Also British
Canada allows dual citizenship, and many Canadians are also British. British citizens do not get an ETA. If you are a Canadian-British dual citizen you should travel as a British citizen.
Current guidance says a dual citizen can prove British citizenship with a valid British passport, or with another valid passport that carries a certificate of entitlement showing the right of abode in the UK. A Canadian passport on its own does not show British citizenship to an airline or a border officer. Airline staff in Canada will usually ask for something that does.
If you hold a British passport, travel with it and check its expiry date well before you fly. If you believe you are British by descent but have never held a British passport, resolve that long before the trip, because the proof takes time to put together. Some Commonwealth citizens with a parent born in the UK may have a right of abode and can apply for a certificate of entitlement; check the current rules on who qualifies.
Do not apply for an ETA on a Canadian passport to get round missing British documents. That is not how the system is designed to work, and it can create problems at check-in and at the border.
Canadian Citizens Who Are Also Irish
Irish citizens do not need an ETA and cannot obtain one, including people who also hold Canadian citizenship. Many Canadians have Irish citizenship through a parent or grandparent.
The practical advice is to travel to the UK on your Irish passport. It is the clearest way to show your status, and it keeps you out of the ETA system altogether. If you are entitled to an Irish passport but do not hold one yet, apply for it well in advance of travel.
Canadian and US Dual Nationals
Many people carry both a Canadian and a United States passport. Both countries are currently on the ETA National List, so either passport can be linked to an ETA. The point to remember is that an ETA belongs to a single passport.
- If you apply using your Canadian passport, travel to the UK using that same Canadian passport.
- If you apply using your US passport, travel using that US passport.
- One ETA does not transfer from one passport to the other.
- Keep the booking, the ETA and the passport you present at the gate in line. A mismatch is the likeliest cause of trouble at check-in.
Your other country’s own entry rules for its citizens are separate matters, which this guide does not cover.
Does Canada’s Commonwealth Membership Exempt Canadians from the UK ETA?
No. Canada is a Commonwealth realm, and the King is its head of state, so some travellers assume that Canadians enjoy a special route into the UK. In the ETA system, membership of the Commonwealth by itself creates no exemption. Canada is on the ETA National List, and Canadian passport holders are ETA nationals unless an exemption applies to them as individuals.
Nor does the UK treat all Commonwealth citizens alike. Some Commonwealth nationalities need visas, some can obtain an ETA, and some people with close family ties to the UK hold British status or a right of abode. What matters is your personal status, shown by the passport you use and any UK permission you hold. Do not rely on a general belief about Commonwealth travellers.
When a Canadian Passport Holder Does Not Need an ETA
Current UK guidance lists several groups of people who do not need an ETA. The following are the ones that most often apply to people travelling from Canada:
- British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens.
- Holders of a UK visa.
- People with permission to live, work or study in the UK, including settled and pre-settled status and the right of abode, and people with comparable permission in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.
- Airside transit passengers who do not pass through UK border control.
- Lawful residents of Ireland who enter the UK from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man, who may have to show proof of residence. This is about living in Ireland, and a Canadian tourist visiting Ireland does not qualify.
- People exempt from immigration control, and people awaiting an EU Settlement Scheme decision.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for a Canadian Passport?
An ETA lasts for two years from the day it is granted, or until the passport named in the application expires, whichever is sooner. While it is valid it can be used for multiple journeys, with each visit assessed under the Visitor rules and the officer’s decision at the border.
Even a Canadian passport with many years left produces an ETA of two years at most, and a passport that expires in fourteen months ends the ETA in fourteen months. Some travellers renew first so that they apply only once. You can check whether you hold a valid ETA, and when it expires, using the UK government’s online checking service.
What If I Renew My Canadian Passport?
Because the ETA is tied to a particular passport, any change of passport generally means a new ETA. The following situations all come up in practice:
- Normal renewal. A renewed Canadian passport has a new number. Apply for an ETA on it before you travel.
- Expired passport. The ETA ends with the passport named in the application, even if two years have not passed.
- Lost, stolen or damaged passport. The replacement is a new document, and the old ETA cannot be carried over to it.
- Name change. A change of name that results in a new passport needs a new ETA. If details in an existing application were wrong or have changed, current guidance says to apply again.
We do not know of any exception to this, and we have not invented one. If a renewal and a UK trip fall close together, wait for the new passport and apply with it.
How Long Can Canadian Citizens Stay in the UK with an ETA?
An ETA allows you to travel and to seek Visitor permission. Where the Visitor rules are met, a Visitor stay is generally up to six months. It would be a mistake to say that an ETA grants six months: the officer you meet at the border decides whether to admit you and for how long.
Be ready to explain how long you plan to stay and what you will do. A stay under the Creative Worker concession is limited to three months.
What Can Canadian Citizens Do in the UK with an ETA?
An ETA lets you travel to the UK and seek Visitor permission for a number of ordinary short-stay purposes. Each has its own limits, and each has its own guide on this site.
- Tourism. Holidays, sightseeing and city breaks. See UK ETA for Tourism.
- Visiting family and friends. Social visits to relatives and friends. See UK ETA for Visiting Family and Friends.
- Qualifying business activity. Meetings, conferences and similar activities. See UK ETA for Business Visits.
- Short-term study. Short courses that fit the Visitor rules. See UK ETA for Short-Term Study.
- Permitted paid engagements. Certain defined engagements where every condition is met. See UK ETA for Permitted Paid Engagements.
- The Creative Worker concession. A separate route of up to three months, with its own conditions. The ETA is the travel authorisation and not the permission to work. See UK ETA for the Creative Worker Visa Concession.
- Transit. An ETA is needed where a connection takes you through UK border control (see the transit section).
Keep the categories apart: a holiday that includes a paid gig can move from one category into another, and a border officer looks at what you are actually in the UK to do.
Business Travel from Canada to the UK
Canadian companies in finance, technology, energy, mining, film and professional services regularly send people to the UK. Many of those trips can be made as a Visitor with an ETA if they are genuinely short and fit the Visitor business rules.
What a business visit can include
- attending meetings and discussions with UK contacts, and negotiating or signing contracts for your overseas employer;
- attending conferences, seminars, trade fairs and investor events;
- site visits and inspections of the kind the Visitor rules allow;
- other qualifying activities listed in the Visitor rules.
What a business visit cannot be
A business visit is not a way to work for a UK company, to take up a UK post or to serve UK clients as though you were based in the UK. An ETA does not allow ordinary employment. If a Canadian employer is posting you to the UK, look at the routes in our UK Visa Guide. For where the line falls between a visit and work, see UK ETA for Business Visits.
Can Canadian Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
Short-term study is possible within the Visitor framework, generally for up to six months. That can suit a short language or subject course, a summer programme or a brief academic placement, including a short stay during a Canadian university break. Our UK ETA for Short-Term Study guide explains what counts.
Longer study, a degree, or any programme that does not fit the Visitor rules may need a Student visa or other immigration permission, and an ETA will not be enough. A Canadian student planning a full year abroad or a UK master’s degree should start with the UK Visa Guide and not the ETA.
Frequent Canadian Visitors
Some Canadians visit the UK several times a year, for example to see grandchildren, to spend part of the winter away, or because the UK is a regular part of their work. An ETA is designed to suit this: while it remains valid it can be used for multiple journeys.
However, it does not let you live in the UK through frequent or successive visits. We are not aware of a fixed annual number of days in the current rules, and we do not invent one here. What the rules look at is whether the pattern of your visits suggests that you are in fact making your life in the UK. Long stays with only short gaps between them can raise questions at the border. Each arrival is assessed in its own right, so be prepared to explain your travel history.
What an ETA Does Not Allow
Current guidance says an ETA does not allow you to:
- work, paid or unpaid, for a UK organisation or on a self-employed basis, except for a permitted paid engagement or work under the Creative Worker concession;
- settle or live long-term in the UK;
- live in the UK through frequent or successive visits;
- study long-term without suitable permission;
- claim public funds, which means benefits;
- marry, register a civil partnership or give notice of either, where Marriage Visitor permission is required instead of ordinary Visitor travel;
- stay beyond the permission you are given.
If you have a criminal record or a previous refusal of entry to the UK, guidance suggests that a Standard Visitor visa may suit you better than an ETA.
UK ETA vs UK Visa for Canadian Citizens
| Question | UK ETA | UK visa or other permission |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Digital permission to travel, linked to your passport | Immigration permission for a defined purpose and period |
| Typical use | Eligible short travel of up to 6 months: tourism, family, business, short study | Long-term employment, longer study, settlement, family migration, marriage |
| Where you apply | Online or in the UK ETA app | Through the application process for the chosen route |
| Does it guarantee entry? | No | No. Entry is decided at the border |
| Work | Not allowed, apart from permitted paid engagements and the Creative Worker concession | Depends on the route |
A Canadian citizen is likely to need a visa or another form of permission, and not an ETA, for long-term employment in the UK, longer study, settlement, family migration, marriage or civil partnership in the UK, or any other purpose that falls outside the Visitor framework. The routes differ widely, so begin with our UK Visa Guide and then check the requirements for the specific route.
UK ETA Requirements for Canadian Citizens
The requirements are modest, and they are the same in principle for each nationality:
- The Canadian passport you will travel with. It has to be valid and has to be the passport you actually use on the journey.
- An email address you can access, because the decision is sent there. Check your spam folder too.
- A photograph of your passport details page and a photograph of your face. The face photo must meet the digital photo rules, or the application may be delayed or rejected.
- Identity and passport information, entered exactly as it appears in the passport.
- Answers to the application questions, covering contact details and suitability. An ETA can be refused or cancelled on grounds such as criminality, earlier immigration breaches, or false or missing information, so answer truthfully and completely.
- A card or mobile wallet to complete the payment stage.
Our UK ETA Requirements page explains how to prepare. For the service and processing options on this website, see UK ETA fees and processing options. This guide shows no amounts itself, so that you always find that information in one place.
How to Apply for a UK ETA from Canada
Confirm eligibility
Check that you will travel on a Canadian passport and that none of the exemptions or dual-citizenship situations above applies to you.
Prepare your Canadian passport
Have the passport to hand, check its expiry date, and have your email address and payment method ready.
Enter your application details accurately
Type your name, date of birth and passport number exactly as shown in the passport. Small differences are a common cause of delay.
Provide the passport and photo information
Supply a clear image of the passport page and a face photograph that meets the rules. Good light, a plain background and a neutral expression help.
Review the passport details
Read every answer before you submit. If details are wrong after submission, a new application is generally needed.
Choose an available service or processing option
On this website you can choose the option that suits your travel dates. It describes how quickly we handle your application, not how long the final immigration decision takes.
Submit the application and payment
Complete the payment step and keep the confirmation we send you, including your UK ETA reference number.
Watch your email
Look in your inbox and your spam folder. Do not fly until you have an email confirming that you hold an ETA.
Travel with the same passport
Present the same Canadian passport at check-in and at the UK border that you named in the application.

Apply NowHow Long Does a UK ETA Decision Take?
Current guidance says that you will usually receive a decision by email within a day, but that it can take up to three working days. No one should plan around an instant decision, and nobody can promise approval before a particular flight. Applying at least three working days ahead is a sensible minimum, and earlier is better for a transatlantic booking that is hard to change.
If three working days pass without an email, check your spam or junk folder and follow the government guidance.
The immigration decision is made by the UK authorities, and its timing is outside anyone else’s control. The speed at which a service such as ours prepares and submits the details you give us is something different. A faster service option shortens our handling time. It does not shorten the authorities’ decision time and it does not make approval certain. Our guide to UK ETA processing times covers the subject in more depth.
Do Canadian Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?
Yes. Each traveller needs their own ETA, including babies and children, unless an exemption applies to that child.
A child travelling on a Canadian passport needs an ETA linked to that child’s own passport. A parent’s ETA does not cover the children, however young they are and however they are carried through the airport. Every application is for one person and one passport.
A parent or guardian can apply on a child’s behalf. Guidance says that if the person is with you, you can apply for them in the app, and that if they are not with you, you apply online with photographs of their passport and face. Babies and toddlers can be difficult to photograph, so give yourself time. Children’s passports are generally issued for a shorter period than adults’ passports, and the child’s ETA will end when that passport does.
Family Travel from Canada
Canadian families often combine a visit to relatives with a wider holiday. Because every ETA is individual, a family of five on Canadian passports makes five applications and receives five decisions.
- Decisions can arrive at different times, so one approval does not mean that the whole family has been approved.
- Check that each person’s details match that person’s own passport, including spelling and date of birth.
- If family members carry different passports, for example one parent on a Canadian passport and another on a different nationality, the rules for each passport apply to each person.
On this website you can enter details for more than one traveller in a single session. That is a convenience for you. The UK authorities still decide each application separately, and no group approval is promised.
UK Airport Transit for Canadian Citizens
Many Canadians pass through UK airports on the way elsewhere. Whether you need an ETA for that connection depends on whether you pass through UK border control.
Airside transit
In an airside transit you do not go through UK border control before your onward journey. Current ETA rules exempt qualifying passengers in this position, so a passenger who stays airside does not need an ETA.
Landside transit
In a landside transit you pass through UK border control, spend a short time in the UK and then go back through control to leave, usually within 24 hours. Government guidance says you need an ETA if you pass through border control at a UK airport before continuing your journey.
Check with your airline
Do not assume that every UK connection behaves the same way. Whether you stay airside depends on your tickets, your airline’s arrangements, your terminals and the airport. Ask your airline, or check the airport arrangements, before you book, and confirm again close to the date of travel because arrangements can change.
Canada, the UK and Onward to Europe
London is a common stopping point for Canadians heading to Europe and beyond. These examples show how the ETA question arises, and none promises a particular result at a particular airport.
- Toronto to London to a European city. On a single through ticket with an airside connection, you may never reach UK border control. If you must clear border control, an ETA is needed.
- Vancouver to London to a European city. The same test applies. Settle the question before you fly.
- Montréal to London, then onward. The city you depart from is irrelevant. What matters is whether you cross UK border control.
- Calgary to London, then onward. Changing terminals or leaving the secure area may change the answer, so ask the airline.
Factors that change the answer
- Baggage. If you have to collect your bags and check them in again, you will usually have entered the UK.
- Separate tickets. Two unconnected tickets often mean re-checking bags, which can mean passing through border control.
- Overnight connections. A stop in the UK is not a transit if you leave the airport. A Canadian traveller who spends the night in a London hotel needs an ETA.
- Airline instructions. Follow what your airline tells you for your specific booking.
Do not rely on what a friend experienced at the same airport on another day. Finding out at a Canadian check-in desk that you needed an ETA leaves very little room to fix the problem.
Travelling from Canada to the UK and Ireland
A great many Canadians include Ireland in a trip to the British Isles. The two are different countries with different rules. The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK and sets its own entry requirements, which you should check separately. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
There are no routine immigration checks on the land border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, but that does not switch off the UK’s rules. Entering the UK, including Northern Ireland, still means holding an ETA where one is needed. Entering through Ireland does not remove the requirement.
A Canadian visitor who flies into Dublin, tours the Republic and then travels on to Belfast or the Giant’s Causeway should expect to need an ETA for the Northern Ireland part of the trip. The exemption for people who live in Ireland applies to those who are lawfully resident in Ireland and can show it, entering the UK from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man. It is not an exemption for Canadian tourists who are simply visiting Ireland. If any part of your itinerary is in the UK, apply for the ETA before you leave Canada.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
The ETA scheme now extends to the Crown Dependencies. Current guidance says an ETA can be used to travel to Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man as well as the UK, for a stay of up to six months. Applications for these destinations opened on 9 April 2026, and the requirement began on 23 April 2026. You apply through the same UK ETA app and website, and you indicate where you expect to spend most of your time. Journeys within the Common Travel Area are not affected. If your plans include one of the islands, check the guidance for that destination shortly before you leave.
What Happens When Canadian Citizens Arrive in the UK?
On arrival you go to border control. The ETA shows that you were permitted to travel, but it does not decide whether you are admitted. That is decided by a Border Force officer or, where you are eligible, by an eGate.
- Use the same Canadian passport that you named in your ETA application.
- Be prepared to be asked why you are coming. Answer clearly and truthfully, and consistently with what you said when you applied.
- Depending on your circumstances, supporting information can help, such as where you will be staying and your return or onward travel. There is no single mandatory list of documents, and we do not invent one.
eGates for Canadian Passport Holders
Current Border Force guidance lists Canada among the non-European nationalities whose passport holders can use the standard UK eGates, alongside Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and the United States. The conditions currently include:
- a biometric passport, with the biometric symbol on the cover;
- a valid digital immigration status or a record of a digital exemption;
- a minimum age of 8, with travellers aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult;
- a minimum height of 120 cm.
These conditions have changed over time, so do not rely on older figures for age or height. Using a gate is never guaranteed. If a gate cannot complete the check, or your trip requires an officer, you will be sent to a Border Force desk. Anyone entering under the Creative Worker concession with a certificate of sponsorship must not use an eGate, and must see an officer to obtain the stamp that the concession requires.
Common UK ETA Mistakes for Canadian Citizens
- Assuming that old visa-free travel means no ETA. Trips made before the ETA took effect say nothing about the current requirement.
- Assuming a Canadian PR card creates eligibility. The nationality on your travel passport does.
- Assuming Commonwealth membership creates an exemption. It does not.
- Applying with one passport and travelling on another. This is a particular risk for Canadian-US dual nationals.
- Using an old ETA after renewing your passport. A new passport generally needs a new ETA.
- Assuming one ETA covers the family. Each traveller, including every child and baby, needs their own.
- Misunderstanding transit. Ask your airline whether your connection takes you through UK border control.
- Confusing Ireland with Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and entering through Ireland does not remove the ETA requirement.
- Treating an ETA as permission to work. It is not.
- Assuming an ETA guarantees entry. The border officer decides.
Before You Leave Canada for the UK
- Confirm that you have the email showing your ETA is granted, and that the details match your passport.
- Check that you will travel on the same passport that you named in the application, and that its expiry date suits your trip.
- Make sure the names on your booking match the names in each passport.
- Check every family member individually, including children and babies.
- If you are connecting through the UK, confirm with your airline whether you pass through UK border control.
- Check that the purpose of your trip fits the Visitor rules, whether it is tourism, a family visit, business or short study.
- If your passport, your name or your plans changed after you applied, check whether you need to apply again.
- Keep useful travel information to hand, such as where you are staying and your return or onward travel.
UK ETA FAQs for Canadian Citizens
Do Canadian citizens need a UK ETA?
Generally yes. Canada is on the ETA National List for travel on or after 8 January 2025, so a Canadian citizen on a Canadian passport needs an ETA before an eligible short visit. The main exceptions are people who already hold UK immigration permission, British and Irish citizens, and passengers who stay airside throughout.
Is the UK ETA a visa for Canadians?
No. It is a digital permission to travel that is linked to your passport. It is not a visa, and it does not itself give you permission to enter. A Border Force officer decides on admission when you arrive.
How long can Canadians stay in the UK with an ETA?
An ETA lets you seek Visitor permission, generally for up to six months per visit where the Visitor rules are met. That is a ceiling and not an entitlement: the officer decides on arrival.
How long is a UK ETA valid for a Canadian passport?
Two years from the date it is granted, or until the Canadian passport named in the application expires, whichever comes first.
Do Canadian children need an ETA?
Yes. Every traveller needs an individual ETA, babies and children included, unless an exemption applies. A parent or guardian can apply for a child, using the child’s own passport and a photograph of the child’s face.
Does a Canadian PR card qualify someone for an ETA?
No. Permanent residence is not Canadian citizenship, and the UK decides ETA eligibility by the nationality of the passport you travel with. A permanent resident with another country’s passport follows the rules for that passport.
What if I live in Canada but hold another passport?
Look at the position for the passport you will travel on. A work permit, study permit or provincial residence does not make you a Canadian national for UK purposes.
Do dual Canadian-British citizens need an ETA?
No, and they cannot obtain one. Be ready to prove British citizenship with a valid British passport, or another valid passport carrying a certificate of entitlement that shows the right of abode.
Do dual Canadian-Irish citizens need an ETA?
No. Irish citizens cannot obtain an ETA. A valid Irish passport is the straightforward way to show your status.
Can Canadian-US dual citizens use either passport?
Both countries are on the ETA National List, so either passport can have an ETA. But an ETA belongs to the passport named in the application, so travel on that same passport. One ETA does not carry over to the other.
Does Commonwealth membership exempt Canadians?
No. Commonwealth membership by itself creates no ETA exemption. Canada is on the ETA National List.
Do I need a new ETA after renewing my Canadian passport?
Generally yes. The ETA is only valid on the passport named in the application, and a renewed or replacement passport is a new document.
Do Canadians need an ETA for a Heathrow connection?
Only if the connection takes you through UK border control. A passenger who stays airside throughout does not. Ask your airline how your tickets work.
Can Canadian citizens use UK eGates?
Canada is on the list of nationalities eligible for the standard eGates when current conditions are met, such as a biometric passport, a minimum age of 8 and a minimum height of 120 cm. Use of a gate is never guaranteed.
Does ETA approval guarantee entry?
No. An ETA is permission to travel. On arrival you can still be questioned, and you can still be refused entry if you do not meet the Visitor rules.
