🇧🇪UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Belgian Citizens
Belgians cross to Britain by Eurostar, by car through the Channel Tunnel, by ferry and by air, and the ETA question is the same for each. This guide covers when a Belgian passport holder needs one, how the Belgian identity card fits in, and what to check before you leave.

Do Belgian Citizens Need a UK ETA?
The short answer
Generally, yes. Belgium is item 52 on the ETA National List, under paragraph 1.1(d), and the requirement applies to travel on or after 2 April 2025. A Belgian citizen who travels on a Belgian passport for an eligible short trip to Britain needs an ETA first, unless an exemption applies or they already hold qualifying UK immigration permission.
That wording is deliberate. Belgian citizenship, taken alone, does not decide the matter. What counts is the passport you travel on, any UK status you hold, and whether one of the recognised exemptions fits your situation. Plenty of Belgians fall squarely inside the requirement, and a smaller group does not. The sections below sort out who is who.
The ETA is an electronic permission to travel, linked digitally to one passport. It is not a visa, it is not printed on a sticker, and it does not promise that you will be admitted. Think of it as a gate you must pass through before boarding, with the real decision still waiting at the border.
Can Belgian Citizens Travel to the UK with a Belgian Identity Card?
For ordinary ETA travel, the passport is the document. Do not assume that a Belgian eID stands in for the passport named in your application. At the same time, it is wrong to say that a Belgian identity card is never accepted, because some travellers with protected status can use one.
Most Belgians carry the electronic identity card, often just called the eID, and use it every day at home and across the Schengen Area. Many assume it works for Britain as well. Under the ETA scheme, the link between the approval and the travel document is a passport. An ordinary visitor should therefore travel on the passport they entered in the application, and a national identity card plays no part in that arrangement.
The protected categories
Current UK guidance separates out a defined group of EU, EEA and Swiss nationals who may still use a valid national identity card to reach the UK. The group is tied to specific kinds of status, namely:
- settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme;
- pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme;
- a valid EU Settlement Scheme family permit;
- a Frontier Worker permit;
- S2 Healthcare Visitor status;
- a qualifying pending application under the Scheme, on the conditions the guidance lays down.
Guidance for these cases also looks at the card itself. Identity cards that meet the international biometric standard remain acceptable for this group, and cards that fall short of it can continue to be used by the same group for now, unless the UK announces otherwise. Rules like these are revised from time to time, so look at current UK guidance shortly before you travel.
Putting the two positions side by side
- A Belgian visitor with no protected status uses a passport and, where an ETA applies, holds the approval linked to it.
- A Belgian in one of the protected categories may use a valid Belgian identity card where the guidance allows it. Their status generally means they need no ETA at all.
This page cannot judge whether a given person falls within a category, and it does not describe how to obtain status.
What If I Have Settled or Pre-Settled Status?
If you hold valid qualifying UK immigration status, you do not need an ETA. That is the cleanest of the exemptions. A Belgian who built a life in Britain, perhaps working in finance or the EU institutions' orbit, perhaps studying at a university, and who now lives or travels back and forth with status, is outside the ETA requirement.
The travel document is a separate question. Depending on the guidance in force, you may be able to travel on either a Belgian passport or a permitted Belgian identity card. Whichever you use, it helps to make sure the document matches what your online UK immigration account holds. After a passport renewal, update the account so the record and the document agree before the next trip. Our aim here is only to flag the link, not to teach the Scheme.
What If I Live in Belgium but Hold Another Passport?
Belgium is home to a large international population, from diplomats and EU staff in Brussels to students in Leuven and Ghent and workers in Antwerp's port economy. For the UK ETA, where you live is not the test. The test is the nationality of the passport you will use, together with any UK status or exemption you hold.
A Belgian residence card, whether it reflects a temporary permit, a permanent permit, or a basis tied to work, study or family, proves the right to live in Belgium. It does not replace a passport for UK purposes, and it does not by itself create or remove an ETA requirement. Someone resident in Brussels on a foreign passport should read the UK rules for that passport.
Questions about Belgian immigration law belong with Belgian authorities. This page sticks to the UK side.
Dutch, French and German Speakers: Does Region or Language Matter?
Belgium has Dutch-, French- and German-speaking communities. None of that affects UK ETA eligibility. A traveller from Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels or the German-speaking east is judged in exactly the same way, on three things: nationality, the passport used for travel, and UK immigration status or exemption.
One practical point is worth noting. Make sure the spelling of your name in the application matches the passport, including any accents or compound surnames, because it is the passport that the ETA is linked to.
Is the UK ETA Part of Schengen?
No. Belgium belongs to Schengen. The United Kingdom does not. Belgian citizenship does not create an exemption from the ETA.
- Free movement inside the Schengen Area gives you nothing at the British border.
- A UK ETA does not authorise entry to Belgium, France or any other Schengen country.
- Each country on a multi-stop route has its own rules, and you should check them one by one.
UK ETA vs ETIAS
The two names are similar, which causes confusion, but the schemes differ in purpose, authority and status.
- The UK ETA is operating now. It covers eligible travel to the United Kingdom.
- ETIAS is a separate European system. It is not currently operating, and applications are not being collected.
- Neither replaces the other. A UK ETA is not an ETIAS approval, and an ETIAS approval would not be a UK ETA.
This guide gives no ETIAS charge and no launch date. If you are asked to pay for an ETIAS application now, treat the request with suspicion.
Do Belgian Citizens Need a UK ETA for Eurostar?
Where an ETA applies to you, yes. Boarding a train rather than a plane does not change the requirement. International rail travel to the UK is subject to the same permission rules.
Brussels is linked to London by a direct international rail service, and many Belgians treat it as the natural way to reach the city. The rail connection is quick and central, but it is still an entry into the UK. Border formalities are completed as part of the journey, and the ETA question is answered the same way as for a flight.
- Each traveller, adult or child, needs their own approval where one is required.
- The approval is digital and linked to the passport named in the application. Travel on that passport.
- The ETA does not replace the passport itself, which you will need to show.
- An approval is permission to travel and does not guarantee admission on arrival.
We deliberately leave out timetables and ticket prices here. They change, and the rail operator is the right place for them.
Brussels to London with a UK ETA
Picture the journey as a series of checks, each of which expects the same passport. A practical run-through helps.
- Before you book, confirm whether you need an ETA. If you do, obtain it before you travel, not on the platform.
- When you book, enter names exactly as they appear in the passport, so that the ticket, the passport and the ETA tell the same story.
- At the station, expect international border formalities before you board. Have the linked passport ready, rather than an eID card.
- For children, remember that officers check each passenger individually. An adult's approval never covers a child.
- On arrival, your admission is still decided by the officer, whatever approvals you hold.
No printed ETA is required. The approval lives in a digital record, though keeping the confirmation email is sensible. If something about the booking or the passport looks inconsistent, sort it out before departure, because a rail departure leaves little room for last-minute fixes.
Do Belgian Citizens Need an ETA When Driving to Britain?
Cross-Channel road travel is part of Belgian life. Plenty of families and business travellers drive south-west through France, then use the Channel Tunnel shuttle or a ferry crossing to reach England.
The ETA follows the person, not the vehicle. It does not matter which motorway you take, whether you pass through French territory, or which crossing you choose. Every occupant is a separate traveller, and each one who falls within the requirement needs an approval linked to their own passport. A driver's ETA does not extend to the front passenger or to the children in the back.
- Check every passenger's document before leaving home, not at the terminal.
- Do not rely on the vehicle booking to prove anything about the people in it.
- Keep passports within easy reach. Do not pack them away in the boot.
Do Belgian Citizens Need an ETA When Travelling to Britain by Sea?
Arriving by sea does not by itself create an exemption. Whether you walk aboard as a foot passenger or drive onto a vessel, the same question applies at the end of the voyage: are you a person who needs an ETA to travel to the UK? If so, you need approval before you go.
Services change over time, so this guide does not list specific sailings, schedules or fares. Confirm the current arrangements with the operator when you book, and treat the ETA as a separate step that no ticket can replace.
Is the UK ETA Only Required When Flying?
No. Where an ETA applies, the way you travel does not remove it.
- By air: the carrier may check for permission at check-in or boarding.
- By international rail: the Brussels to London train does not sit outside the scheme.
- By road and the Channel Tunnel: the requirement attaches to each person in the vehicle.
- By sea: a ferry arrival is not an exemption.
A mistaken belief that the ETA is an aviation rule is one of the most common reasons Belgian travellers are caught out. It is a border rule.
Flying from Belgium to the UK with an ETA
Flights run to Britain from Brussels, from Charleroi, and from other Belgian airports, and the ETA rules do not vary by departure point. What matters is the traveller and the passport.
- Travel on the passport that is linked to your ETA.
- Make sure the name and passport details on the booking agree with the passport.
- Expect the airline to be able to check that you hold the required permission.
- Remember that the ETA is digital. It does not take the place of the passport.
- Do not read an approval as a promise of entry. The officer at the UK border decides.
Low-cost carriers and flag carriers apply the same checks, so a cheap ticket is no workaround. If you are in doubt, resolve it before you reach the airport, not at the desk.
Do Belgian Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
A Belgian school group must not assume the France or Germany exemption applies. The current rules provide school-party exemptions through paragraphs ETA 1.9 and ETA 1.10, and those name France and Germany. Belgium has no equivalent provision.
Excursions to London, exchange visits and language trips are popular with Belgian schools. Teachers planning them should work on the basis that each pupil who is covered by the ETA requirement needs an individual approval linked to their own passport.
- The French and German exemption conditions do not transfer to a Belgian school or a Belgian pupil.
- Class lists, group tickets and school letters are not substitutes for individual approvals.
- Parents and staff should each check their own position, since adults on the trip are travellers too.
This does not mean no Belgian pupil can ever be exempt. A child with British or Irish citizenship, or with valid UK immigration permission, may fall outside the requirement for that reason. The point is that the exemption belongs to the child, never to the school party.
Do Belgian Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?
Where an ETA is required, each traveller needs their own, and age makes no difference. A newborn with a passport is a traveller. A parent's approval cannot be shared with a child, and one application does not cover a family.
For a family trip from Belgium, it helps to treat the children as separate cases from the start. Collect every passport, check each expiry date, and apply for each person who needs an approval. Our guide to UK ETA for children, babies and families walks through the typical questions.
Belgian Citizens Who Are Also British
British citizens do not need an ETA, and a person who holds British citizenship cannot get one under the current rules. A Belgian-British dual citizen is therefore in a different position from an ordinary Belgian visitor.
The travel document question is the awkward part. A dual citizen should be ready to show proof of British citizenship when travelling to the UK, and the sensible way to do that is with a valid British passport. Do not use a Belgian passport and an ETA as a way round that. This guide does not give advice on nationality law in either country.
Belgian Citizens Who Are Also Irish
Irish citizens do not need an ETA to travel to the UK. A Belgian who is also an Irish citizen can rely on that status, and it is usual to show an Irish passport as proof of it. Whether someone qualifies as an Irish citizen is a question of Irish law, which this guide does not address.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Belgian Citizens?
An ETA runs for up to two years from the date it is granted, or until the linked passport expires, if that is earlier. In practice, someone whose Belgian passport has eight months left will get an approval of about that length, not two years.
During the validity period you may make multiple journeys, each time seeking entry under the Visitor rules. The approval is not a residence permission and does not open an unlimited stay. For more on how validity behaves across trips, read our guide to ETA validity, multiple trips and new passports.
What If I Renew or Replace My Belgian Passport?
The approval is linked to one passport, so a different passport generally means a new ETA where the requirement applies. Several situations lead to that result:
- Normal renewal before or after expiry.
- Expiry of the passport named in the application.
- Loss or theft followed by a replacement.
- Damage that leads to a fresh passport being issued.
- Changed details that result in a new document.
Check the passport you plan to pack against the one named in your approval. If they differ, apply again before travelling. Holders of UK status should additionally update the document recorded on their online account.
How Long Can Belgian Citizens Stay in the UK?
A person who qualifies as a Visitor may generally seek entry for up to six months on a trip, provided the Visitor rules are satisfied. That figure describes the stay an officer may allow. It is not something the ETA grants.
ETA validity and permitted stay are different measures. The first is the period during which you may travel, and the second is the time you may spend in the country once admitted. The officer decides how long to admit you for, and it can be less than six months.
Can Belgian Citizens Make Frequent UK Trips on One ETA?
Belgium and Britain are close, and many people go back and forth for work, family or weekends. One valid ETA can cover several journeys. Still, a few points deserve attention.
- The Visitor rules apply on each trip, and each arrival is assessed separately.
- Frequent or back-to-back visits can raise questions if they look like living in the UK.
- An ETA cannot be used to settle in Britain through a sequence of short stays.
- There is no UK equivalent of the Schengen 90/180-day calculation. The officer looks at the purpose and pattern of your visits instead.
Be ready to explain the purpose of each trip, particularly if you spend a lot of time in the UK.
Business Travel from Belgium to the UK
Belgium's economy has strong ties to Britain, from logistics and chemicals to finance and institutional work. A Belgian professional can carry out a range of business activity as a Visitor, such as:
- attending meetings and conferences;
- negotiating and signing contracts;
- carrying out site visits and inspections that fit the Visitor rules;
- other business activity the Visitor rules permit.
None of this means ordinary employment in the UK. For the details, see our guide to UK ETA for business visits.
Can Belgian Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
An ETA does not give permission to take a job in the UK. It is a travel authorisation, and the underlying permission still comes from the immigration rules. A few categories sit close to the line and are worth telling apart from ordinary employment:
- Visitor business activity, described above.
- Permitted Paid Engagements, covered in our guide to UK ETA for permitted paid engagements.
- The Creative Worker concession, explained in our creative worker guide.
For a regular job, a contract of employment or a longer placement, read about the routes in our UK visa guide. Do not start work on the strength of an ETA.
Can Belgian Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
Short periods of study can fall within the Visitor rules, which makes the ETA useful for a brief course, a language class or a short placement. Longer or different programmes may need another type of permission. Read UK ETA for short-term study for the limits, and the UK visa guide if your plans go further.
Visiting the UK from Belgium for Tourism or Family
Holidays, short city breaks, football weekends, and visits to relatives or friends are classic Visitor trips. A Belgian passport holder making one of them generally needs an ETA, and can use it for multiple trips while it remains valid.
Our guides on UK ETA for tourism and visiting family and friends set out what these visits usually involve, and where a stay with family stops looking like a visit.
Do Belgian Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
The answer turns on whether you go through UK border control. Staying airside throughout, for a qualifying connection, may be exempt. Entering the UK landside, for instance to change terminals or collect baggage, may need an ETA where the rules apply to your passport.
Read our guide to UK ETA transit and layovers before you choose an itinerary that touches Britain, and ask the airline to confirm how the connection works.
Belgium, Britain and Ireland
The Republic of Ireland is a separate country from the UK. Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Flying from Brussels to Belfast is therefore a trip to the UK, while flying from Brussels to Dublin is not.
Passing through Ireland does not automatically remove the ETA requirement for a later trip into the UK. The exemption for people lawfully resident in the Republic of Ireland covers those who live there and travel to the UK from elsewhere in the Common Travel Area. A Belgian visitor who spends a few days in Dublin before crossing into Northern Ireland does not meet that description.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
The ETA scheme has covered Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man since 23 April 2026, so one approval can serve a visit to those islands as well as to the UK. Because travel inside the Common Travel Area follows its own arrangements, check the position for the island you are visiting close to your departure date.
Can Belgian Citizens Use UK eGates?
Belgian citizens are within the group of EU nationalities that can use the UK's automated eGates, subject to conditions. Those conditions are:
- a biometric passport;
- an age of at least 8 years;
- for those aged 8 to 17, an accompanying adult;
- a minimum height of 120 cm;
- the valid digital permission, status or exemption that applies to the traveller.
The gates read a passport, so a traveller who holds only an identity card cannot use them in the same way. No one is guaranteed gate admission, and a gate may send you to a desk instead.
Contactless eGates are not the same thing
Contactless eGates are a newer process that is, at present, limited to British citizens. Being able to use the ordinary eGates does not mean being able to use the contactless ones, and Belgian travellers should not expect contactless access under current guidance.
UK ETA Requirements for Belgian Citizens

Common UK ETA Mistakes for Belgian Citizens
- Assuming the Belgian eID always replaces a passport. For ordinary ETA travel it does not.
- Confusing residence in Belgium with Belgian passport nationality. The UK rules follow the passport.
- Treating the ETA as part of Schengen. It is a separate system.
- Confusing the UK ETA with ETIAS. They are different schemes, and ETIAS is not operating at present.
- Thinking Eurostar passengers are exempt. The train does not remove the requirement.
- Thinking a drive through the Channel Tunnel is exempt. The ETA follows each traveller.
- Believing the ETA applies only to flights. It applies however you arrive.
- Expecting a Belgian school party to enjoy the France or Germany exemption. It does not.
- Using a new passport with an approval tied to the old one. A replacement usually needs a new ETA.
- Assuming a parent's ETA covers a child. Each traveller needs their own.
- Assuming an ETA gives permission to work. It does not.
- Assuming an ETA guarantees admission. The border officer decides.
- Mixing up Ireland and Northern Ireland. Only the second is in the UK.
Before You Travel from Belgium to the UK
- You have confirmed whether an ETA or an exemption applies to you.
- The passport in your bag is the one the approval is linked to.
- If you rely on a protected category, you have checked that your Belgian identity card and status fit it.
- Each child has been checked individually.
- If a school trip is involved, nobody is relying on the France or Germany exemption.
- You have checked for any recent passport renewal or replacement.
- Your Eurostar, flight, road or sea arrangements are confirmed.
- Booking details and passport details are consistent.
- The purpose of the trip fits the Visitor rules.
- Your ETA is linked to the passport you will actually use.
UK ETA FAQs for Belgian Citizens
Do Belgian citizens need a UK ETA?
Generally yes. Belgium sits at item 52 of the ETA National List, under paragraph 1.1(d), for travel on or after 2 April 2025. A Belgian passport holder making an eligible short trip needs an ETA unless an exemption applies or they already hold valid UK immigration permission. It is not true that every Belgian citizen always needs one.
When did the ETA become required for Belgian citizens?
For travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025. Applications had opened a few weeks earlier, on 5 March 2025.
Can Belgian citizens enter the UK with a Belgian eID?
Not as ordinary visitors. An ETA is tied to a passport, so the passport named in the application is the document to carry. Certain protected status holders may use a valid national identity card under current UK rules, which is a separate position from ordinary ETA travel.
Do Belgian citizens with settled or pre-settled status need an ETA?
No. Valid qualifying UK immigration status removes the ETA requirement. Your status carries its own document rules, so check them before you travel.
What if I live in Belgium but hold another passport?
Living in Belgium does not change the answer. The UK looks at the nationality of the passport you travel on, together with any UK status or exemption you hold. A Belgian residence card is not a UK travel permission.
Is the UK ETA part of Schengen?
No. Belgium is inside the Schengen Area and the UK is outside it. Schengen rights do not replace the UK requirement, and a UK ETA gives no permission to enter any Schengen state.
Is the UK ETA the same as ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is a separate European authorisation scheme, and it is not currently operating, with applications not being collected. Neither approval can be used in place of the other.
Do Belgian citizens need an ETA for Eurostar?
Where an ETA applies to you, yes. Taking the train does not remove the requirement. You still need the permission linked to the passport you will travel on.
Do Belgian citizens need an ETA when driving to Britain?
Where an ETA applies, yes. The requirement follows each traveller. It does not depend on the car, the route through France or the type of Channel crossing.
Do Belgian citizens need an ETA if they arrive by sea?
Arriving by ferry or another sea route is not an exemption. If you are within the ETA requirement, you need approval before you travel.
Do Belgian schoolchildren need an ETA?
Usually yes. The school-party exemptions in the current rules name France and Germany only. A Belgian school group cannot rely on them, although an individual pupil may be exempt for another valid reason, such as British or Irish citizenship.
Do Belgian babies need their own ETA?
Yes, where an ETA is required. Every traveller, including an infant, needs an individual approval linked to their own passport.
How long is a UK ETA valid for Belgian citizens?
Up to two years from the date of grant, or until the linked passport expires if that comes sooner. It can cover multiple journeys within that period.
Do I need a new ETA after renewing my Belgian passport?
Generally yes. The approval is linked to the passport you applied with, so a new passport needs a new ETA where one is required.
Can Belgian citizens work in the UK on an ETA?
No, not in the ordinary sense. An ETA is not a work permission. Some business activities fall within the Visitor rules, but employment in the UK generally needs a different route.
Do Belgian citizens need an ETA for UK airport transit?
It depends on whether you pass through UK border control. A qualifying airside connection may be exempt, while a landside one may need an ETA.
Can Belgian citizens use UK eGates?
Yes, when the current conditions are met. Belgian citizens belong to the EU group within the eGate scheme. The traveller must hold a biometric passport, be at least 8 years old (with an adult for ages 8 to 17), be at least 120 cm tall and have the valid digital permission, status or exemption that applies. Admission through a gate is never guaranteed.
Does an ETA guarantee entry to the UK?
No. An ETA allows you to travel. A Border Force officer decides on admission when you arrive.
