🇦🇺UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE

UK ETA for Australian Citizens

Australian passport holders generally need a UK ETA before an eligible short trip to the United Kingdom, whether it is a holiday, a visit to family, a business meeting or a short course, unless an exemption applies or they already hold another valid UK immigration permission. This guide explains who is covered, who is not and how to apply from Australia.

Do Australian Citizens Need a UK ETA?

The short answer

Generally, yes. Australia is on the UK’s ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 8 January 2025, with no Australia-specific conditions attached to the entry. An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport for an eligible short stay therefore needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding, unless an exemption applies or they already hold another valid UK immigration permission. Not every Australian needs one in every circumstance, so check the exemptions in this guide before you assume either way.

For most Australians the position is simple. You carry an Australian passport, you are heading to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland for a holiday, a visit to relatives, a conference or a short course, and you hold no UK visa or settled status. You apply online or in the UK ETA app, you wait for the confirmation email, and you keep it with you before you fly. Airlines check for the ETA at check-in, and a passenger without one can be refused boarding at the desk.

Quick guide: does your situation need an ETA?

Common situations for people connected to Australia and whether a UK ETA is needed
Your situationETA needed?
Australian citizen on an Australian passport, visiting the UK on holidayYes, before you travel
Australian permanent resident travelling on another country’s passportIt depends on the rules for that passport’s nationality. Permanent residence does not decide it
Australian citizen who is also a British citizenNo, and you cannot get one. Travel as a British citizen
Australian citizen who is also an Irish citizenNo, and you cannot get one. Travel on your Irish passport
Connection through a UK airport without passing through border controlNo, if you stay airside throughout
Connection that takes you through UK border controlYes, if an ETA is required for your passport and the stop is not exempt
Planning to work for a UK employer or study for a full degreeAn ETA is the wrong document. See the UK Visa Guide

What Is a UK ETA?

An Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital permission to travel to the UK. You supply your details and photographs, the application is decided, and the result arrives by email. Nothing is stamped in your passport and nothing needs to be printed. The ETA is held electronically against the passport you named when you applied.

  • It is a digital permission to travel, linked to a specified passport.
  • It is not a traditional visa, and it does not replace one where a visa is required.
  • It is not automatic permission to enter the UK. It allows you to travel and to seek entry as a Visitor.
  • It does not guarantee admission. A Border Force officer decides that when you arrive.

UK ETA vs Australia’s ETA: Why the Terms Get Mixed Up

Australians often recognise the term “ETA” because Australia also runs its own Electronic Travel Authority system for certain visitors travelling to Australia. The two systems share an acronym and very little else. Confusing them is one of the most common mistakes we see, and it can leave a traveller without the document they actually need.

  • The UK ETA is the United Kingdom’s system. It governs travel to the UK, the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, and it is administered under UK rules.
  • Australia’s own ETA is a separate Australian immigration product for certain visitors travelling to Australia. It is not a UK document.
  • They are not interchangeable. An Australian ETA gives no permission to enter the UK, and a UK ETA does nothing for travel to Australia.
  • Australian citizens travelling to Britain follow UK rules, whatever the Australian system says about visitors to Australia.

If you are searching for the Australian system, it is not covered on this site. If you are searching for permission to travel to London, Edinburgh or anywhere else in the UK from an Australian passport, you are in the right place.

Does Australian Permanent Residence Make You Eligible for a UK ETA?

No. Australian permanent residence is not Australian citizenship. UK ETA eligibility depends primarily on the nationality of the passport you use to travel. An Australian permanent resident card or visa does not qualify anyone for an ETA.

Many people from other countries become Australian permanent residents, live and work in Australia for years, and assume that their status in Australia carries across to the UK. It does not. The UK asks which passport you are travelling on, and that decides the question.

How it works in practice

  • An Australian citizen with an Australian passport falls under the Australian entry on the National List and generally needs an ETA for an eligible short trip.
  • An Australian permanent resident with an Indian passport is treated as an Indian passport holder, and the requirements for that passport apply, whatever the person’s status in Australia.
  • An Australian permanent resident with a passport from another country should check the rules for that nationality. Depending on the country, that could mean a visa, an ETA or neither.
  • A permanent resident who later becomes an Australian citizen and travels on an Australian passport is covered by the Australian entry from that point on.

So residence in Australia cannot create an ETA entitlement, and it cannot take one away. Nothing on an Australian immigration document substitutes for a UK ETA or a UK visa.

What If I Live in Australia but I’m Not an Australian Citizen?

The immigration status you hold in Australia does not determine UK ETA eligibility. None of the following decides the UK question on its own:

  • permanent residence;
  • a work visa, including a sponsored or employer-linked visa;
  • a student visa;
  • a partner visa or other family-based visa;
  • any other temporary visa or residence arrangement.

What matters is the nationality of the passport you will use on the journey. A person living in Sydney or Melbourne on a passport from another country is assessed under the rules for that passport, exactly as if they lived at home. Our eligibility checker on the homepage shows how most passports are treated, but confirm the detail in current guidance before you apply.

This guide does not give Australian immigration advice, including whether travel could affect an Australian visa or application. For that, speak to a registered migration agent or an appropriate Australian adviser.

Australian Citizens Who Are Also British

British citizens do not need an ETA, and a dual British and Australian citizen cannot obtain one. Travel to the UK as a British citizen, and show British status with the documents current guidance accepts.

Many Australians are also British, whether through a parent, a grandparent or a long residence path. Current GOV.UK guidance says that if you are a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship, you cannot get an ETA. That rule matters because the ETA system is not a route around missing British documents.

A valid British passport is the clearest proof of British citizenship. An Australian passport on its own does not show British citizenship to an airline or a border officer, and airline staff in Australia will usually ask for something that does. If you hold British citizenship but no British passport, check the documents current guidance accepts well before you travel, because gathering them can take time.

Do not apply for an ETA on your Australian passport to avoid producing British documents. That is not how the system is designed to work, and it can create problems at check-in and at the border.

Australian Citizens Who Are Also Irish

Irish citizens do not need an ETA, and current guidance says dual citizens with Irish citizenship cannot get one. Irish citizenship is common among Australians with Irish ancestry, and many people discover they are entitled to an Irish passport only when they start planning a trip.

The practical advice is to travel to the UK on your Irish passport. It is the clearest way to show your status and keeps you out of the ETA system altogether. If you are entitled to an Irish passport but do not hold one, apply well in advance of travel, because the process takes time.

Does Australia’s Commonwealth Membership Exempt Australians?

No. Commonwealth membership itself does not remove the UK ETA requirement. Australia is included in the ETA National List, and Commonwealth membership does not carry an automatic route into the UK.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of countries with historic ties, and it is easy to assume that those ties create travel privileges. In UK immigration law they do not. An Australian passport holder is subject to the ETA National List entry for Australia, and to the rules for exemptions and the Visitor framework, in the same way as any other listed nationality.

What If I Have British Parents, Grandparents or UK Ancestry?

Many Australians have British parents or grandparents, and some assume that this makes them British. Family history can matter, but it is not something to settle by assumption. This guide does not try to decide your nationality from your family tree, and it does not give individual nationality-law advice.

  • Some Australians may hold British citizenship already, or may be able to apply for it through a route that depends on their own circumstances.
  • The ETA is intended for eligible short travel as a Visitor. It is not a route to British citizenship and it does not confer it.
  • British citizens do not use an ETA. If you are a British citizen, travel with your British passport.
  • If you are planning to live or work in Britain for the longer term, you may need a different status or route, and the ETA will not get you there.

Having a British grandparent does not automatically make someone British, and no general rule covers every family. If you think you may have a claim, check the official guidance on British citizenship and speak to a suitably qualified adviser before you plan travel around the answer. For the longer-term UK routes, see our UK Visa Guide.

When an Australian Passport Holder Does Not Need an ETA

Current UK guidance lists several groups of people who do not need an ETA. The following are the ones that most often apply to travellers from Australia:

  • British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens who hold either citizenship.
  • Holders of a UK visa.
  • People with permission to live, work or study in the UK, including settled and pre-settled status and the right of abode, as well as people with permission to live, work or study in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.
  • Airside transit passengers who transit through a UK airport without passing through border control. Check with your airline if you are not sure.
  • People who live in Ireland and who are travelling into the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. This exemption is about living in Ireland, and an Australian tourist visiting Ireland does not qualify for it.
  • British overseas territories citizen and British National (Overseas) passport holders, who fall under their own rules.
  • People exempt from immigration control, and people waiting for a decision on an EU Settlement Scheme application.

How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for an Australian Passport?

An ETA lasts for two years from the day it is granted, or until the Australian passport named in the application expires, whichever is sooner. While it is valid you can travel to the UK as many times as you want. Each arrival is still assessed under the Visitor rules, and the officer at the border has the final say.

A passport that has many years left still produces an ETA of two years at most. A passport that expires in fourteen months ends the ETA in fourteen months. Some travellers renew their passport before applying, so that a single ETA covers the longest possible period. Your ETA is tied to one passport, and it does not stretch to cover a replacement document.

What If I Renew or Replace My Australian Passport?

Because an ETA is linked to a specified passport, a change of passport generally means a new ETA. Several situations come up in practice:

  • Renewal. A renewed Australian passport has a new number. Apply for an ETA on the new passport before you travel.
  • Expiry. The ETA ends with the passport named in the application, even if two years have not passed.
  • Lost or stolen passport. A replacement is a new document. The old ETA is linked to the old passport, so you should apply again with the replacement.
  • Damaged passport. If a damaged passport is replaced, the replacement generally needs its own ETA.
  • Name change. A change of name that results in a new passport needs a new ETA. If details in an existing application were wrong or have changed, current guidance says to apply again.

How Long Can Australians Stay in the UK with an ETA?

An ETA allows you to travel and to seek Visitor permission. Where the Visitor rules are met, a Visitor stay is generally up to six months. An ETA does not grant six months automatically. It is permission to travel, and the officer you meet at the border decides whether to admit you and for how long.

Be ready to explain how long you plan to stay and what you intend to do. Long trips with several stops in the UK and Europe should still match the purpose you give at the border, and any stay under the Creative Worker concession follows its own limits and conditions.

What Can Australian Citizens Do in the UK with an ETA?

An ETA lets you travel to the UK and seek Visitor permission for a number of short-stay purposes. Each has limits, and each has its own guide on this site.

Keep these categories apart. A holiday that turns into a paid gig can move from one category into another, and the officer looks at what you actually intend to do in the UK.

What an ETA Does Not Allow

Current guidance says an ETA does not allow you to do the following, and each point is worth reading carefully:

  • take ordinary employment in the UK, paid or unpaid, except where a permitted paid engagement or the Creative Worker concession applies;
  • settle in the UK or live there long-term;
  • live in the UK through frequent or successive visits;
  • study long-term without suitable permission;
  • claim public funds, meaning benefits;
  • marry, register a civil partnership or give notice of either where Marriage Visitor permission is required instead of ordinary Visitor travel;
  • overstay the permission you are given.

Some Australians have a criminal record, a past refusal of entry to the UK or an earlier immigration breach. Guidance suggests that a Standard Visitor visa may suit those circumstances better than an ETA, so check your position before relying on the ETA.

An Australian is likely to need a visa or another form of permission, not an ETA, for long-term employment in the UK, longer study, settlement, family migration, marriage or civil partnership, or any other purpose outside the Visitor framework. Start with our UK Visa Guide and then check the requirements for the route that fits you.

Can Australians Work or Live in the UK with an ETA?

No, not in ordinary employment. An ETA does not provide ordinary UK work permission and does not allow you to live in Britain.

A short meeting or a site visit for your Australian employer falls within the Visitor framework. Working for a UK employer, or serving UK clients as though you were based in Britain, does not. Australians who intend to take employment, move to the UK or undertake long-term work may need another immigration route. Depending on individual eligibility, other routes may be open to you. For the wider picture, see the UK Visa Guide, and for the limited exceptions see the permitted paid engagements guide and the Creative Worker concession guide.

UK ETA Requirements for Australian Citizens

The core requirements are the same in principle for every nationality, and they are straightforward to prepare:

  • The Australian passport you will travel with. It must be valid and must be the passport you actually use on the journey.
  • An email address you can access, because the decision is sent there. Check your spam or junk folder too.
  • A photograph of your passport details page and a photograph of your face. The face photograph must meet the digital photo rules, or the application may be delayed or rejected.
  • Identity and passport information, entered exactly as it appears in the passport.
  • Answers to the application questions, covering contact details and suitability. An ETA can be refused or cancelled on grounds such as criminality, earlier immigration breaches, or false or missing information, so answer truthfully and completely.
  • A card or mobile wallet to complete the payment step.

Our UK ETA Requirements page explains how to prepare. For the service and processing options on this website, see UK ETA Fees & Processing Options. This guide does not show any amounts itself, so that the information lives in one place.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from Australia

  1. Confirm ETA eligibility

    Check that you will travel on an Australian passport and that none of the exemptions or dual-citizenship situations above applies to you.

  2. Prepare the passport you will travel with

    Have the passport to hand, check its expiry date and make sure it is the document you will carry on the trip.

  3. Enter your applicant information carefully

    Type your name, date of birth and passport number exactly as they appear in the passport. Small differences are a common cause of delay.

  4. Provide the passport and photo information

    Supply a clear image of the passport details page and a face photograph that meets the rules. Good light, a plain background and a neutral expression help.

  5. Review the passport details

    Read every answer before you submit. If details are wrong after submission, a new application is generally needed.

  6. Select an available UKETA.sg processing option

    On this website you can choose the service option that suits your travel dates. It describes how we handle your application, not how long the UK decision takes.

  7. Submit the application and complete payment

    Keep the confirmation we send you, including your reference number.

  8. Monitor your email

    Look in your inbox and your spam folder. Do not fly until you have an email confirming that you hold an ETA.

  9. Travel with the same passport

    Present the same Australian passport at check-in and at the UK border that you named in the application.

How Long Does a UK ETA Decision Take?

Current GOV.UK guidance says you will usually get a decision by email within a day, but that it can take up to three working days. Nobody can promise an instant decision, and nobody can promise approval before a particular flight. Applying at least three working days ahead is a sensible minimum, and for a long-haul trip from Australia with onward connections, earlier is better.

If three working days pass without an email, check your spam or junk folder first and then follow the government guidance on the next step.

The UK authorities control the decision time. A faster service option on this website shortens our handling time only, and it does not make approval certain. Our guide to UK ETA processing times covers the subject in more depth.

Business Travel from Australia to the UK

Australian companies in mining, resources, finance, agriculture, technology, education and professional services regularly send people to the UK. Because the flight is long, Australian business travellers often make fewer, more concentrated trips, and each one needs a clear purpose that fits the Visitor rules.

What a business visit can include

  • meetings and discussions with UK contacts, and negotiating or signing contracts for your overseas employer;
  • attending conferences, seminars, trade fairs and investor events;
  • qualifying site visits and inspections of the kind the Visitor rules allow;
  • other qualifying business activities listed in the Visitor rules.

What a business visit cannot be

A business visit is not a way to work for a UK company or to take up a UK post. If an Australian employer is posting you to Britain for a longer assignment, the route is different and you should look at the options in our UK Visa Guide. For the line between a visit and work, read UK ETA for Business Visits.

Can Australian Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?

Short-term study can be possible within the Visitor framework, generally for up to six months. That can suit a short language or subject course, a summer programme or a brief academic placement, including a stay that falls during an Australian university break. Our UK ETA for Short-Term Study guide explains what counts.

Longer study, a degree, or any programme that does not fit the Visitor rules may need a Student visa or other permission, and an ETA will not be enough. An Australian student planning a full year or a UK master’s degree should begin with the UK Visa Guide rather than the ETA.

Can Australians Make Multiple UK Trips with One ETA?

Yes, while an ETA remains valid you can travel to the UK more than once, using the same passport. The ETA is designed to support multiple journeys during its validity, and many Australians with a long-standing connection to Britain use that flexibility.

The limit is that Visitor rules do not allow you to live in the UK through frequent or successive visits. We do not know of a fixed annual number of days that applies, and we do not invent one here. What the Visitor rules look at is whether the pattern of your visits suggests that you are in fact making your home in the UK. Repeated long stays separated by very short gaps can raise questions at the border, so be prepared to explain your travel history honestly.

Do Australian Children and Babies Need a UK ETA?

Yes. Each traveller needs their own ETA, including babies and children, unless an exemption applies to that child.

A child travelling on an Australian passport needs an ETA linked to that child’s own passport. A parent’s ETA does not cover children, however young they are. Every application is for one person and one passport, and a family trip is a set of separate applications.

A parent or guardian can apply on a child’s behalf. Current guidance says that if the child is with you, you can apply in the UK ETA app, and that if the child is not with you, you apply online with photographs of the child’s passport and face. Babies and toddlers can be difficult to photograph, so allow extra time. A child’s ETA ends when that child’s passport expires, and passports for children can expire sooner than adults’ passports.

Family Travel from Australia

Australian families often combine a visit to relatives in Britain with a wider holiday through Europe, and a family of four on Australian passports will need four separate ETAs. Some practical points follow from that:

  • Decisions can arrive at different times, so one approval does not mean that the whole family has been approved.
  • Check that each person’s details match that person’s own passport, including spelling and date of birth.
  • If family members carry different passports, for example one parent on an Australian passport and another on a different nationality, the rules for each passport apply to that person.
  • Plan around the slowest decision. A family that flies on a tight schedule should apply well ahead.

On this website you can enter details for more than one traveller in a single session. That is a convenience for you. The UK authorities still decide each application separately, and no group approval is promised.

UK Airport Transit for Australian Citizens

Many Australians fly through London or another UK airport on the way to Europe, Africa or the Americas. Whether you need an ETA for that connection depends on whether you pass through UK border control.

Airside transit

In an airside transit you do not pass through UK border control before continuing your journey. Current ETA rules exempt qualifying airside transit passengers, so a passenger who stays airside does not need an ETA for the connection.

Landside transit

In a landside transit you pass through UK border control. Current guidance says that an ETA is needed where you pass through border control at a UK airport before continuing your journey. Leaving the secure area to collect your bags, changing to another airline or going through immigration are common reasons why a connection becomes landside.

Check with your airline

Do not assume that every UK connection behaves the same way. Whether you stay airside depends on your tickets, your airline’s arrangements, your terminals and the airport. Ask your airline before you book, and confirm again close to the date of travel, because arrangements can change.

Australia, the UK and Onward to Europe

London is one of the most common stopping points for Australians travelling to Europe. The examples below show how the ETA question arises. None of them promises a particular result at a particular airport.

  • Sydney to London to a European city. On a single through ticket with an airside connection, you may never reach UK border control. If you must clear border control, an ETA is needed.
  • Melbourne to London to a European city. The same test applies. Settle the question before you book the flights.
  • Brisbane to London and then onward. The city you depart from does not change the answer. What matters is whether you cross UK border control.

Factors that change the answer

  • Through tickets versus separate tickets. A single through ticket is generally more straightforward than two unconnected bookings, which often mean collecting and re-checking bags.
  • Baggage. If you must collect bags and check them in again, you will usually have entered the UK.
  • Terminals. Changing terminals can mean leaving the secure area, which can change the answer.
  • Overnight connections. A stop in the UK is not a transit if you leave the airport. An Australian traveller who spends a night in a London hotel needs an ETA.
  • Airline instructions. Follow what your airline tells you for your specific booking.

Do not rely on what a friend experienced at the same airport on another day. Finding out at an Australian check-in desk that you needed an ETA leaves very little room to fix the problem before a long flight.

Travelling from Australia to the UK and Ireland

Many Australians include Ireland in a trip to the British Isles, and the two places are often blurred together. They are different countries with different rules. The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK and sets its own entry requirements, which you should check separately. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.

There are no routine immigration checks on the land border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, but that does not turn off the UK’s rules. Entering the UK, including Northern Ireland, still means holding an ETA where one is needed. Entering through Ireland does not remove the requirement.

An Australian visitor who flies into Dublin, tours the Republic and then travels on to Belfast or the Causeway coast should expect to need an ETA for the Northern Ireland part of the trip. The exemption for people who live in Ireland applies to those who live there and are travelling into the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. It is not an exemption for Australian tourists who are simply visiting Ireland. If any part of your itinerary is in the UK, apply for the ETA before you leave Australia.

Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man

The ETA scheme now extends to the Crown Dependencies. Current guidance says that since 23 April 2026, travellers who need an ETA can use it to travel to Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man as well as the UK. An ETA issued for one of these places is recognised across the group, so you do not need a separate application for each.

Movement within the Common Travel Area, which covers the UK, the Crown Dependencies and Ireland, is not affected in the same way. If you arrive at one of the islands directly from outside that area, such as from Australia, you should check the guidance for that destination shortly before you leave, as the arrangements there are set separately.

What Happens When Australians Arrive in the UK?

On arrival you go to border control. The ETA shows that you were permitted to travel, but it does not decide whether you are admitted. That decision is made by a Border Force officer or, where you are eligible, by an eGate.

  • Use the same Australian passport that you named in your ETA application.
  • Be prepared to be asked the purpose of your trip. Answer clearly and truthfully, and consistently with what you said when you applied.
  • Depending on your circumstances, supporting information can help, such as where you will be staying and your return or onward travel. There is no single mandatory list of documents, and we do not invent one.

eGates for Australian Passport Holders

Australia is currently one of the nationalities eligible to use the standard UK eGates. Current GOV.UK guidance sets out the conditions, which include:

  • a biometric passport, with the biometric symbol on the cover;
  • a valid digital immigration status or a record of a digital exemption;
  • a minimum age of 8, with travellers aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult;
  • a minimum height of 120 cm.

Those are the conditions as this page is reviewed. They can change, so do not rely on older figures for age or height. Using a gate is never guaranteed. If a gate cannot complete the check, or if your trip requires an officer, you will be sent to a Border Force desk.

Contactless eGates are a separate matter

The UK began rolling out a new contactless eGate process in October 2026. Current reporting says that, at first, it is available only to British citizens travelling on British biometric passports, with other nationalities to follow later. Australian citizens should keep using the normal eGate process where their requirements are met, unless airport signs say otherwise. Do not confuse the two.

Travellers who need the Border Force stamp required under the Creative Worker concession must not use an eGate, and must see an officer to receive it.

Common UK ETA Mistakes for Australian Citizens

  1. Assuming historic visa-free travel means no ETA is needed. Earlier trips say nothing about the current requirement.
  2. Confusing Australia’s ETA with the UK ETA. They are separate systems, and one does not give permission for the other.
  3. Assuming Australian permanent residence qualifies someone. The nationality of the travel passport decides it.
  4. Assuming Commonwealth membership creates an exemption. It does not.
  5. Applying with one passport and travelling on another. An ETA is tied to the passport named in the application.
  6. Travelling after a passport renewal with the old ETA. A new passport generally needs a new ETA.
  7. Assuming one family ETA covers everyone. Each traveller, including every child and baby, needs their own.
  8. Misunderstanding airside and landside transit. Ask your airline whether your connection takes you through UK border control.
  9. Assuming an ETA permits ordinary employment. It does not.
  10. Confusing Ireland with Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and entering through Ireland does not remove the ETA requirement.
  11. Assuming approval guarantees entry. The border officer decides.

Before You Fly from Australia to the UK

  • Confirm that you have the email showing your ETA is granted, and that the details match your passport.
  • Check that you will travel on the passport you named in the application, and that its expiry date suits the trip.
  • Make sure the name on your booking matches the name in your passport exactly.
  • Check every family member individually, including children and babies.
  • Confirm your transit arrangements with the airline, including whether you pass through UK border control.
  • Check that the purpose of your trip fits the Visitor rules, whether it is tourism, a family visit, business or short study.
  • If your passport, your name or your plans changed after you applied, check whether you need to apply again.
  • Keep your travel details accessible on your phone and in print, including your onward and return journeys.

UK ETA FAQs for Australian Citizens

Do Australian citizens need a UK ETA?

Generally yes. Australia is on the ETA National List for travel to the UK on or after 8 January 2025, so an Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport needs an ETA before an eligible short visit. The main exceptions are people who already hold UK immigration permission, British and Irish citizens, and passengers who stay airside throughout a connection.

Is a UK ETA a visa for Australian citizens?

No. It is a digital permission to travel that is linked to your passport. It is not a visa, and it does not itself give you permission to enter. A Border Force officer decides on admission when you arrive.

How long can Australians stay in the UK with an ETA?

An ETA lets you seek Visitor permission, generally for up to six months per visit where the Visitor rules are met. That is a ceiling, not an entitlement. The officer at the border decides how long you may stay.

How long is a UK ETA valid for an Australian passport?

Two years from the date it is granted, or until the Australian passport named in the application expires, whichever comes first.

Can Australians visit the UK multiple times with one ETA?

Yes, while the ETA remains valid and the passport is the same, you can travel to the UK more than once. Each arrival is still assessed under the Visitor rules, and frequent or successive visits must not amount to living in the UK.

Do Australian children need an ETA?

Yes. Every traveller needs an individual ETA, including children, unless an exemption applies. A parent or guardian can apply for a child, using the child’s own passport and a photograph of the child’s face.

Does Australian permanent residence qualify someone for a UK ETA?

No. Permanent residence is not Australian citizenship. UK ETA eligibility depends primarily on the passport you use to travel. A permanent resident travelling on another country’s passport follows the rules for that passport.

What if I live in Australia but hold another passport?

The passport you travel on decides the question. An Australian work visa, student visa, partner visa or other temporary residence does not change the rules for a non-Australian passport. Australian immigration questions need Australian advice.

Do dual Australian-British citizens need an ETA?

No, and they cannot obtain one. Travel as a British citizen and be ready to show British citizenship with a valid British passport or the documents current guidance accepts.

Do Australian-Irish dual citizens need an ETA?

No. Irish citizens do not need an ETA and cannot obtain one. A valid Irish passport is the straightforward way to show your status for travel to the UK.

Does Commonwealth membership exempt Australians?

No. Commonwealth membership on its own creates no ETA exemption. Australia is included in the ETA National List, so an Australian passport holder generally needs an ETA for an eligible short visit.

Is the UK ETA the same as Australia’s ETA?

No. The UK ETA is the United Kingdom’s permission to travel. Australia’s Electronic Travel Authority is a separate Australian product for certain visitors travelling to Australia. They are not interchangeable, and an Australian ETA gives no permission to enter the UK.

Do I need a new ETA after renewing my Australian passport?

Generally yes. The ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, so a renewed or replacement Australian passport generally needs a new ETA before you travel.

Can Australians use UK eGates?

Australia is an eligible nationality for the standard eGates when the current conditions are met, including a biometric passport, digital immigration status or a digital exemption record, a minimum age of 8, and a minimum height of 120 cm. Use of a gate is never guaranteed.

Can Australians work in the UK with an ETA?

Not in ordinary employment. An ETA does not give general UK work permission. Limited activities such as permitted paid engagements, and the Creative Worker concession, have their own conditions. Anyone who intends to take a job should check the UK Visa Guide.

Can Australians study in the UK with an ETA?

Short study that fits the Visitor rules can be possible. Longer study, or any programme that does not fit the Visitor rules, may need another immigration permission, and an ETA will not be enough.

Does ETA approval guarantee UK entry?

No. An ETA is permission to travel. On arrival you can still be questioned, and you can still be refused entry if you do not meet the Visitor rules.
