🇦🇷UK ETA COUNTRY GUIDE
UK ETA for Argentine Citizens
Argentines are used to crossing several borders on a DNI, and 2026 brought a new electronic DNI and a redesigned passport. None of that changes what the UK looks for: an ETA is tied to your Argentine passport. This guide explains who needs one and how each document fits.

Do Argentine Citizens Need a UK ETA?
Briefly
For most trips, yes. Argentina sits at item 8 of the ETA National List, which catches journeys made on or after 8 January 2025. If you are Argentine, hold an Argentine passport and are heading to Britain for a brief, eligible stay, the ETA has to be in place before you leave, unless an exemption fits or you already hold UK permission.
“Generally” is chosen with care, because the ETA is not an automatic duty for everyone with Argentine nationality. Holders of a UK visa, people with qualifying settled status, and British or Irish citizens sit outside it, and so does any traveller who will be using some other country’s passport.
The ETA is a digital permission to travel, linked to one passport. It is not a visa, it does not leave a stamp, and it is no promise of admission. Travellers from Buenos Aires, CĂłrdoba, Rosario, Mendoza, Salta, Bariloche or anywhere else in Argentina are treated alike.
Can Argentine Citizens Use a DNI Instead of a Passport for UK Travel?
The Documento Nacional de Identidad, or DNI, is Argentina’s national identity document. A qualifying physical DNI can be used for certain international journeys where regional agreements allow it, which is why many Argentines cross nearby borders without a passport.
That permission is tied to the destination. It does not stretch to the United Kingdom. Argentina’s own migration guidance says that for destinations outside the regional arrangements a valid passport is required, and an ordinary UK ETA is linked to the Argentine passport used in the application.
For a UK ETA trip
Carry the Argentine passport named in your approval. The DNI is not that passport, and it is not a document with which to enter the UK.
This does not mean the DNI is useless as a travel document. It simply is not the one a UK ETA journey relies on.
Why Can Argentines Travel to Some South American Countries with a DNI but Need a Passport for the UK?
Think of regional DNI travel as a club with defined members. Argentina takes part in document-recognition arrangements with some of its neighbours and associated states, and inside that club a physical DNI can serve as the travel document on qualifying trips. The rule belongs to the arrangement, not to the card.
The UK sits outside the club. It has not agreed to accept the DNI in place of a passport, and the ETA system is built around passports. A habit formed on regional trips should not be carried onto a flight to Britain.
This page does not list the member countries and gives no entry or visa advice for other places. If your route includes another South American stop, look at that country’s requirements separately.
What Changed with Argentina’s New Electronic DNI in 2026?
In 2026 Argentina introduced a new generation of the DNI. The physical card is made of polycarbonate and includes a secure contactless chip, with stronger protection against tampering and better means of authentication.
The change is being rolled out progressively. Documents already issued do not have to be replaced just because the new card exists. They stay valid until they expire or until a replacement is needed for another reason, such as a lost card or a required update.
For UK travel
A more advanced identity card is still an identity card. The electronic DNI does not become the passport linked to a UK ETA, and it makes no difference to whether you need an ETA.
Can I Use the DNI in Mi Argentina for International Travel?
No. Argentine guidance says the mobile DNI cannot be used to leave the country. It is a digital version of the identity credential, shown on a phone, and it is useful for many domestic procedures.
- It does not replace the physical document needed to cross an international border.
- For regional trips where a DNI is accepted, the qualifying physical card is the one that counts.
- For an ordinary UK ETA journey, the document is the Argentine passport linked to the approval.
So a traveller who keeps everything on a phone should still pack the passport. A screen cannot be linked to an ETA, and a screen does not clear you through departure. The practical habit to build is simple: before leaving home, put the physical passport in your hand luggage and treat the phone as a back-up for domestic errands, not as a travel document.
Which Argentine Document Is Linked to a UK ETA?
The Argentine passport used in the application. That is the travel document the approval attaches to, and the passport number and expiry date matter, because the link is to that specific booklet.
Neither the DNI nor Mi Argentina holds or transfers an ETA. If you have two valid passports of different kinds, the ETA is bound to the one you applied with, so be consistent from the application to the airport.
What Changed with the New Argentine Passport in 2026?
Argentina also presented a redesigned passport in 2026. It carries a polycarbonate data page with laser-engraved details and an electronic chip, in line with current international document-security standards. As with the DNI, the introduction is progressive.
Passports issued earlier remain valid until they expire or are replaced, so nobody needs to renew immediately because a new design has appeared. The new generation does not alter the UK ETA rule either. An approval simply follows whichever valid Argentine passport you used to apply.
What If I Have an Argentine DNI but I Am Not an Argentine Citizen?
This is a point that is specific to Argentina. The DNI is issued to qualifying foreign residents as well as to citizens, so holding one does not by itself show that a person is an Argentine citizen or that the Argentine-citizen ETA rule applies to them.
The UK position depends on the passport nationality, the travel document actually used, any UK immigration status and any exemption. We do not decide third-country cases here, and we give no Argentine residence advice. A foreign resident should look at the rules for the passport they will carry.
Can an Argentine Driving Licence Replace My Passport for UK ETA Travel?
No. The entitlement to drive is a different thing from being an international travel document. A driving licence is not the passport linked to an ordinary UK ETA, and this page says nothing about using an Argentine licence abroad.
What If an Argentine Citizen Already Has UK Immigration Permission?
Argentina is outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, so the identity-card arrangements written for those nationals do not apply to Argentines. This is its own case.
- If a valid UK visa or eVisa already covers the trip, you do not stack an ETA on top where the rules exempt people with permission.
- Settled and pre-settled status work the same way for someone who is travelling in that capacity.
- Update your UKVI account whenever your passport changes.
- A UK status never makes a DNI into a document for the UK border.
Where you cannot tell whether your own permission reaches as far as a particular trip, read the documents you were given. Our UK visa guide sets out the wider picture.
What If I Am Argentine and British?
A British citizen has no use for an ETA. Someone holding Argentine and British nationality therefore enters the UK as a British citizen and carries the British document proving it. How Argentina handles a second nationality is outside the scope of this page.
What If I Am Argentine and Irish?
The same logic covers Irish nationals: no ETA, with an Irish passport as the natural proof. We offer no commentary on Argentine nationality law.
How Should I Enter My Argentine Name on a UK ETA Application?
Argentine names can include á, Ă©, Ă, Ăł, Ăş, ĂĽ and ñ. The passport is the authority, so enter your details as the application asks and in line with the document in your hand.
- Do not invent an English spelling.
- Do not strip or alter a name just because a domestic record shows an accent differently.
- If the form asks for the machine-readable lines, copy what the passport and the screen prompts tell you.
We do not set out character-conversion rules, because guessing could produce a mismatch with your passport.
Flying from Argentina to the UK with an ETA
People set out from Buenos Aires, CĂłrdoba, Rosario, Mendoza, Salta, Bariloche and other cities. We promise no direct flights and publish no schedules. The ETA rule is the same wherever you board.
- Apply with the Argentine passport you will really carry.
- Check that the booking agrees with the passport.
- A carrier may check digital UK permission before you board.
- Nothing has to be printed, since the approval is held electronically.
- It sits alongside the passport rather than replacing it, and it carries no promise of being let in.
For timing, see our guide to UK ETA processing time.
What If My UK Journey Connects Through Another Country?
A good number of trips from Argentina stop somewhere else before reaching Britain. Where you change planes has no bearing on the UK requirement, which is decided by who you are and which passport you hold.
Transit and entry rules in the connecting country are separate, and we make no determination for Brazil, Chile, the United States, Spain, Portugal, France or any other place. Check each leg yourself.
Do Argentine Schoolchildren Need a UK ETA?
No Argentina-specific school exemption exists. The special school-party provisions are ETA 1.9 for France and ETA 1.10 for Germany, and they concern qualifying schools in those countries. A school organised in Argentina should not assume they apply.
There is a flip side. An Argentine national who is genuinely enrolled at a qualifying school in France or Germany might fit within one of them when all the conditions are met, and personal exemptions or UK status can matter as well.
Do Argentine Children and Babies Need Their Own UK ETA?
Wherever an ETA is required it is required per person, and infants count. What a parent holds does nothing for a child. Likewise a child’s DNI is no stand-in for the child’s own passport on an ordinary UK ETA trip. Our guide to children, babies and families has more.
Do Argentine Citizens Need an ETA for UK Airport Transit?
It turns on whether you pass through UK border control. Staying airside for the whole of a qualifying connection does not require an ETA. If your route takes you landside, for example to collect luggage or change terminals, an ETA may be needed where it applies to your passport.
There is therefore no safe blanket statement either way. Ask your airline how your tickets are arranged, and see our transit and layovers guide.
Argentine Citizens, Ireland and the UK
Ireland (the Republic) and the UK are two different countries, whereas Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Passing through Ireland on the way does not cancel the ETA requirement. One narrow exemption exists for people lawfully resident in the Republic who come to the UK from elsewhere in the Common Travel Area, and because it carries conditions it is no general shortcut.
Can Argentine Citizens Use UK eGates?
Not on nationality alone. Argentina is not on the standard list of non-European nationalities with automatic ordinary eGate access. A chipped Argentine passport, old or new, plus an ETA does not create that eligibility, because passport technology and eGate nationality rules are separate.
Follow Border Force instructions on arrival. A separate Registered Traveller route exists for eligible frequent visitors, and approved members may use the ePassport gates where they are available and the passport meets the requirements. No gate is ever guaranteed.
Can Argentine Passport Holders Join Registered Traveller?
Argentina appears on the list of eligible passports. Joining is subject to the scheme’s own tests: you must be 18 or over, hold an eligible passport, and have either an eligible UK visa or, if you can visit without one, at least four visits to the UK within the last 24 months.
Passing through the UK on the way to somewhere else is not a qualifying visit. We do not publish a price or link to the scheme here.
The ETA and Registered Traveller are different things. An ETA is permission to travel where one is required. Registered Traveller is an optional border-facilitation membership for qualifying frequent travellers. For our own service options, see fees and processing options.
Are Contactless eGates Available to Argentine Travellers?
Contactless eGates began a phased rollout in October 2026, and initially they are limited to British citizens. Other nationalities that already qualify for the ordinary gates are expected to follow later.
Argentine travellers, including Registered Traveller members, should not expect passport-free contactless processing for now. You must still carry a valid passport, and the position could change if the UK authorities announce it.
Business Travel from Argentina to the UK
Argentine professionals with an ETA can handle what the Visitor business rules allow, such as meetings, conferences, negotiating a contract or a qualifying site inspection. What the ETA never provides is a right to take a UK job. Our business visits guide has the detail.
Can Argentine Citizens Work in the UK with an ETA?
On its own an ETA confers no ordinary employment right. Four categories deserve to be told apart:
- activity that counts as permitted Visitor business (see business visits)
- Permitted Paid Engagements
- the Creative Worker concession
- a regular job, which normally calls for a work visa; the UK visa guide explains
Can Argentine Citizens Study in the UK with an ETA?
A brief course may sit inside the Visitor rules; our short-term study guide shows where the boundary lies. Where a Student visa is needed the ETA cannot stand in for it, so a student enrolling for a full programme should read the visa guide first.
Visiting the UK from Argentina for Tourism or Family
Most Argentine visitors come for a holiday, to explore, or to see people they know, and all of that is ordinary Visitor activity. For the limits, read abouttourism and visiting family and friends.
How Long Is a UK ETA Valid for Argentine Citizens?
The clock runs for two years from the day it is granted, but it stops sooner if the linked passport runs out first. Within that period you may travel more than once, though the ETA never amounts to a licence to settle in the UK. See our guide to ETA validity, multiple trips and new passports.
What If I Renew or Replace My Argentine Passport?
Your approval belongs to the passport named when you applied. Whenever that booklet is swapped, whether through renewal, expiry, loss, theft, damage or amended details, the approval does not follow it. In cases where an ETA is required, you can expect to need a new one.
Neither a DNI nor its mobile version can move an approval to a different passport.
How Long Can Argentine Citizens Stay in the UK?
Eligible Visitor travel generally allows you to seek permission to enter for up to six months where the Visitor requirements are met. That is a ceiling, and the ETA does not guarantee a six-month stay. A two-year approval is not two years of residence.
Can Argentine Citizens Make Multiple UK Trips on One ETA?
Yes, throughout its validity. Each arrival is judged afresh against the Visitor requirements, and a run of back-to-back stays must not turn into living in Britain. Do not look for a 90 or 180 day formula, because the UK system does not use one.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man each operate an ETA scheme, with the requirement relevant for travel from 23 April 2026. Where the rules provide for it, the UK and Crown Dependency approvals are accepted by one another. Since the Common Travel Area follows its own arrangements, confirm the position for the island you have in mind close to your departure date.
UK ETA Requirements for Argentine Citizens
You will generally need:
- your Argentine passport, the one you will really use
- a working email address
- a face photo that meets the application’s standard
- passport and identity data entered exactly as printed
- replies to the questions in the form
- a way to pay at the final stage
Neither the card nor the mobile DNI can be offered in place of the passport. The requirements page lists everything, and our fees and processing options.

Apply NowCommon UK ETA Mistakes for Argentine Citizens
- Applying regional DNI travel rules to a UK trip. The UK is outside those arrangements.
- Assuming a physical DNI replaces the passport for a UK ETA journey. It does not.
- Thinking the new electronic DNI is a passport substitute. Better technology does not change its purpose.
- Expecting the DNI in Mi Argentina to get you out of the country. It cannot do so by itself.
- Treating a foreign resident’s DNI as proof of Argentine citizenship. The DNI is also issued to residents.
- Believing the 2026 passport redesign changes ETA eligibility. It does not.
- Believing a chipped Argentine passport unlocks the ordinary UK eGates. Eligibility by nationality is a separate test.
- Mixing up Registered Traveller and the ETA. They do different jobs.
- Counting on a parent’s ETA to cover a child. Each traveller needs their own.
- Supposing a school group from Argentina borrows the French or German exemption. Those rules are narrow.
- Making blanket assumptions about airport transit. Airside and landside differ.
- Flying on a replacement passport with an ETA tied to the old one. Plan for a new approval.
- Reading the ETA as permission to do ordinary work. It gives none.
- Treating approval as a promise of admission. The border officer decides.
- Muddling Ireland with Northern Ireland. Only Northern Ireland is in the UK.

- You have allowed for a renewed or replaced passport.
- You are not counting on eGate access.
- If you rely on Registered Traveller, you have verified it separately.
- You have looked at every connection or transit stop.
- The names on your booking match the passport.
- What you plan to do in the UK fits the Visitor rules.
UK ETA FAQs for Argentine Citizens
Do Argentine citizens need a UK ETA?
In most cases, yes. An Argentine citizen travelling on an Argentine passport for an eligible short UK visit needs an ETA first, unless a specific exemption applies or they already hold qualifying UK permission.
When did the ETA start to apply to Argentines?
Argentina is item 8 on the ETA National List, which covers travel to the UK on or after 8 January 2025.
Can I come to the UK with just my DNI?
No. A physical DNI can be used for travel to certain regional destinations under the rules that apply there, but outside those arrangements a passport is needed. For an ordinary UK ETA trip, use the Argentine passport linked to the approval.
Why does the DNI work for some neighbouring countries but not for the UK?
Regional travel by DNI rests on agreements among the countries involved. The UK is not part of them, so they have no effect on a journey to Britain.
Does the new electronic DNI replace the passport?
No. The new card has better security and a contactless chip, but it is still an identity document. It does not become the passport an ETA is linked to.
Must I swap my current DNI for the 2026 electronic version?
Not simply because it exists. The rollout is progressive, and existing valid documents stay valid until they expire or are replaced for another reason.
Can I travel abroad with the DNI in Mi Argentina?
Not by itself. The mobile version is meant for use within Argentina, and leaving the country calls for the appropriate physical document. For the UK, that is your passport.
Which Argentine document is linked to my ETA?
The Argentine passport you enter when you apply. Take that same passport when you board and when you reach UK border control.
What changed with the Argentine passport in 2026?
A redesigned passport with enhanced security features and a chip has been introduced progressively. It does not alter the UK ETA rule, and an approval simply follows whichever valid passport you used to apply.
Do my old valid passports stop working after the redesign?
No. Passports issued earlier remain valid until their expiry or replacement, so there is no need to rush to renew just because a new design exists.
Does holding an Argentine DNI make me an Argentine citizen?
Not necessarily. Argentina also issues DNIs to qualifying foreign residents. A person’s UK position depends on the passport they use, their UK status and any exemption, not on the DNI.
Do Argentine children need their own ETA?
Where an ETA applies, yes. Every traveller needs one, and a parent’s approval does not cover a child.
Does an Argentine school trip get the France or Germany exemption?
No. Those provisions are written for qualifying schools in France and Germany. A group organised by an Argentine school is not covered because of where the school is.
Can Argentines use ordinary UK eGates?
Not on nationality alone. Argentina is not on the standard list of eGate nationalities, and a chipped passport plus an ETA does not change that. Registered Traveller members may be able to use the gates.
Can Argentine passport holders join Registered Traveller, and is it an ETA?
Argentina is an eligible nationality, subject to the programme’s conditions. It is not an ETA. One does not replace the other.
Do I need an ETA for an airside connection in the UK?
Not for a qualifying airside connection where you never pass UK border control. Landside transit may require one, where the ETA applies to your passport.
How long is an ETA valid, and do I need a new one after renewing my passport?
It can run for two years, or less if the linked passport expires first, and covers repeated journeys. After a passport change you generally need a fresh ETA wherever one applies.
Does an ETA guarantee entry or let me work?
Neither. The ETA is permission to travel, the officer at the border makes the admission decision, and ordinary employment is not part of it.
